From the Detroit Free Press: In '88 Rose Bowl, Perles' gang ends Big Ten's drought

MSU flashback

In '88 Rose Bowl, Perles' gang ends Big Ten's drought

This column originally ran in the Detroit Free Press on Jan.2, 1988.

PASADENA, Calif. They had the ball! They had the ball! Todd Krumm was cradling it, dancing with it, raising it above his head and leaping into the arms of teammate Kurt Larson, and only gravity kept them from flying off into space. All the waiting, all the lean years, all the talk of Rose Bowl jinx - it was all crushed down and squeezed inside this little brown football, and now, Michigan State had it. God. At last.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM HAITI - Ringing in 2014 w/children of our orphanage. Pizza, cake, sparklers, 9 pm bed time. May we all be as blessed this year as how you feel looking into the eyes of these little ones. Thank you all for your kindness and belief in my work this past year, and for sharing an amazing world with me - Mitch

From the Detroit Free Press: Can Lions finally get it right?

MITCH ALBOM: Schwartz is gone, but those who picked him will choose successor

Can Lions finally get it right?

By MITCH ALBOM

No win, no stay. It's been that way elsewhere in the NFL, and it is finally true here in Lions Land. Jim Schwartz is gone. Fired Monday. Look no further than this: His team lost six of its last seven games and missed the playoffs.

Or this: His December record the last two seasons is 0-9.

Or this: His five-year record is 29-51, with one playoff game, a blowout defeat.

From the Detroit Free Press: Apple bites into our holiday humanity

Apple bites into our holiday humanity

Misunderstood.

It's a word we use to make ourselves feel better. It's a virtual anthem to teenagers. And it is the latest marketing maneuver by Apple, which seeks to own Christmas in a way not even the Grinch imagined.

By now you have no doubt seen Apple's latest TV commercial (which actually is titled "Misunderstood"). It has been running all holiday season. At 90 seconds, it's hard to miss.

MY FRIENDS, On this Christmas Eve, I wish all of you peace, the familiar hug of a loved one, and the sense of gratitude that comes when you know something bigger than us is watching over all.
Even in being granted the next breath we take, we are already more fortunate than many. THis is an amazing world if we can clear our minds to see it that way. My eyes have been opened by many things, and you, my friends and readers, are a big one of those things,
Thank you for helping me see the majesty of life, and may this holiday season bring you and yours a blessed contentment. - Mitch

From the Detroit Free Press: FINAL NAIL: Coming up a 'play short' turns out to be this team's true identity

A lump of goal. An empty stocking. Meaningful football just took the rest of the year off in Detroit. In a game Sunday that, for a while, nobody seemed to want, the New York Giants finally looked at the Ford Field scoreboard, saw a fourth down in overtime, and decided, "Why not?''

Moments later, Lions fans were once again crying, "Why us?"

Or "Why again?" Or "Why, Lord, this close to Christmas?" Take your pick. As the Four Tops once sang, it's the same old song. It goes like this:

That's that.
