From the Detroit Free Press: The end of an ice age

"It's not that the tank is completely empty, it just doesn't have enough to carry me through every day at the high level where I want to play at. ..."

Nicklas Lidstrom

The end of an ice age

Lidstrom's decision to leave the wings proves he was a rarity in Detroit sports

The Ice Man melteth.

It took 20 seasons, but those steel blue eyes began to water. The voice quivered. He was out of his element, wearing a suit, not a sweater, in front of a news conference, not a raucous arena, with notes in his hand, not a stick.

And he was saying good-bye.

From the Detroit Free Press: Yellow flag now ablack-white issue

Mitch Albom examines the NFL's debate of penalties for N-word

Yellow flag now a

black-white issue

It's not my word.

I don't like it. I don't use it.

To me, the N-word is a hateful slur based on a person's skin color. Yet because my skin is also a certain color, I am told I cannot criticize its usage.

It's not my word.

But sooner or later, everyone, black and white, will stop saying it in public. This is inevitable. It's called evolving. One day, we will look back on the current debate and shake our heads.

Meanwhile, that debate now centers on whether the NFL should start penalizing teams 15 yards for a player's use of the N-word on the field.

The Latest From MitchAlbom.com: From Detroit to Lakeland: ‘Ernie’ Hits the Road

Mitch Albom’s play ‘Ernie’ is leaving Michigan this year for a special, limited run at the historic Polk Theatre in Lakeland, FL. Lakeland is home to spring training for the Detroit Tigers, and has been for the last 78 years. It’s fitting, then, that the second legendary home for the Tigers is also home this spring for another Tigers legend.

Heading to Abilene, Texas—another first for me—to speak at the Hendrick Hospice Care’s 30th anniversary celebration. Great organization, good cause, and it should be a good time. Any “Abileners” here? Abilenians? Tell me about your city!

I'm back in the U.S., but miss the Philippines already. What an amazing, loving, resilient country. My deepest thanks to my new Filipino friends - and thousands of readers. Rarely have I been as moved as by seeing the ravages of Typhoon Yolanda. It inspired me to launch "D.R.Y. Libraries" (Donated Reading for Youth) a campaign to raise $160K to rebuild and restock school libraries in the typhoon-affected areas.
