At 103, she still was teaching us things

She was born just a few years after the Wright brothers invented the airplane. She was a baby when the Titanic sailed in 1912. She was a schoolgirl during World War I and a grown woman by the time the stock market crashed in 1929.

Her husband fought in a segregated Army during World War II; when he came back, he worked two jobs to buy her a house in Detroit.

She lived in that house for nearly 60 years.

And when she was 101 years old, she was thrown out into the street.

From the Detroit Free Press: Caldwell, we are waiting to be wowed

He'll be the Lions' first African-American head coach in a city that is largely African American, and Tony Dungy, a really good guy, called on his behalf, and he has been to the big game several times. But beyond that, there is not much to excite fans over the hiring of Jim Caldwell.

And, with due respect, for now, there shouldn't be.

From the Detroit Free Press: Anniversary of Haiti quake sad reminder

Four years ago today, the earth shook in Haiti. It lasted less than a minute. By the time the trembling stopped, death had already begun.

Many were killed instantly, by collapsed buildings, oncoming cars, falling pipes, girders, walls. Others died in the days that followed, bleeding out, missing limbs. Some died while being carried to makeshift hospitals. Others died on blankets or old mattresses while awaiting treatment.

Facebook: It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Texanna Hollis, who passed away...

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Texanna Hollis, who passed away just before New Year's Eve at the wonderful age of 103. Texanna was a joy to us all. We met her when she was - incredibly - thrown out of her house after a reverse mortgage was defaulted, but through our charities we were able to get her her house back. She was so happy when she was in that house, which she said her husband had built for her after World War II. She was a woman of God, and was forever faithful. She cried many times during our visits, always from joy, always saying "thank you" for all those who helped her keep her house. I know she is in heaven today. We will miss her down here.

You can learn more about her story here: http://mitchalbom.com/d/news/7560/home-sweet-home-texana-hollis

From the Detroit Free Press: In '88 Rose Bowl, Perles' gang ends Big Ten's drought

MSU flashback

In '88 Rose Bowl, Perles' gang ends Big Ten's drought

This column originally ran in the Detroit Free Press on Jan.2, 1988.

PASADENA, Calif. They had the ball! They had the ball! Todd Krumm was cradling it, dancing with it, raising it above his head and leaping into the arms of teammate Kurt Larson, and only gravity kept them from flying off into space. All the waiting, all the lean years, all the talk of Rose Bowl jinx - it was all crushed down and squeezed inside this little brown football, and now, Michigan State had it. God. At last.
