From the Detroit Free Press: No reason to brag about killing $50M film credits

This past week, Michigan's House of Representatives voted to kill the tax incentives for the film industry. Some lawmakers acted as if they'd just slain an evil dragon.

Not so fast, Gandalf.

I was in on the creation of these things. Back in 2008, at the request of then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a group was formed to see whether Michigan could be competitive in attracting the movie, TV and digital gaming business. Other states were having success with their incentive programs, seeing new jobs and investment while building a young, creative class.

From the Detroit Free Press: Fans shouldn't cry over Suh leaving Lions

Suh who?

That should be the attitude now. The Detroit Lions' best defensive player — and sometimes their biggest headache — will take his talents to South Beach, and you can cry about it or you can move on.

I'd choose the latter. Like LeBron James, Ndamukong Suh will bolt from a Midwest team that drafted him, a team he never led to a championship, for greener pastures in the state of Florida. But James' departure was to join a trifecta of players engineered to win a championship.

Suh's is not.

Here is the column (http://mitchalbom.com/d/journalism/27475/cass-proved-homeless-not-same-hopeless) I did on the remarkable Cass Castelow. He leaves behind a wife and seven children. I have helped by donating to the crowdrise fund for his family (http://crowdrise.com/cass), and if you are so inclined, I urge you to do the same. The funeral is tomorrow, and after that, life will really get hard for them. God bless you, Cass.

From the Detroit Free Press: Cass proved homeless is not the same as hopeless

He had nowhere to go.

No food. No money. And now, no place to sleep. He had been squatting in an abandoned apartment, but someone broke in and stole the copper pipes from under the sink.

Soon water was gushing, and a groggy AnthonyCastelow woke up floating toward the door.

"What the ..." he remembered thinking.

Now he stood, dripping, before the pastor he worked for, a strong, heavyset man named Henry Covington, and he said he couldn't unload food trucks today, because these were the only clothes he owned and they were soaked.
