Working Homes/Working Families gave away its 23rd home last week to the Burrell Family, who tragically lost two sons in the fire in February that destroyed their previous home. Working Homes/Working Families takes abandoned houses, refurbishes them through volunteer services, and gives them to needy working families who need a decent, clean place to live, one they must keep up while continuing to work. Cities thrive through neighborhoods. Neighborhoods need decent houses and people in them. With a new home, we hope the Burrell family can begin to heal

More photos from the beautiful home that now belongs to the Burrell Family. They tragically lost two sons in the fire in February that destroyed their home. They were given the house through the Working Homes/Working Families program. Many thanks to for their beautiful work decorating. A house becomes a home for a family that can now heal. From the Detroit Free Press: Kids in freezer had no chance at life

Two children are murdered. They are hidden in a freezer. If that sounds like a movie, sadly it is not. The killer, according to a court document — and her own words to police — is the children's mother, a 35-year-old Detroiter named Mitchelle Blair, who allegedly abused her four children for years.

Two are now dead, Stephen Berry, who was 9, and Stoni Blair, who was 13. Their surviving older sister, now 17, allegedly was forced to put one of the bodies into the freezer. Their surviving younger brother, only 8, told officials he, too, knew about the frozen corpses.

From the Detroit Free Press: Forcing us to vote is hardly a cure-all

This past week, the president who is forcing Americans to have health care coverage suggested maybe they should be forced to vote.

"It would be transformative," President Barack Obama told a crowd in Cleveland.

It would be transformative. It would transform this country into something it's never been.

Strange to think that it was 20 years ago. It has since been a special gift to be able to share Morrie--Coach--with the world.

Nearly 20 years after his death, Morrie Schwartz lives on - The Boston Globe
www.bostonglobe.com
Twenty years ago this month, thumbing through The Boston Globe in the ABC News Washington Bureau, I stumbled on this ironic headline in the Living section. A PROFESSOR’S FINAL COURSE: HIS OWN DEATH The story of a retired Brandeis sociology professor, stricken with ALS -- Lou Gehrig’s disease -- who…

From the Detroit Free Press: No reason to brag about killing $50M film credits

This past week, Michigan's House of Representatives voted to kill the tax incentives for the film industry. Some lawmakers acted as if they'd just slain an evil dragon.

Not so fast, Gandalf.

I was in on the creation of these things. Back in 2008, at the request of then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a group was formed to see whether Michigan could be competitive in attracting the movie, TV and digital gaming business. Other states were having success with their incentive programs, seeing new jobs and investment while building a young, creative class.
