Cyril Ramaphosa's Image on National Braai Day

Across race, language, region and religion, National Braai Day is South Africa's annual day of celebration where South Africans gathering around fires, being the central theme of the celebration. It is called many things: Chisa Nyama, Braai and Ukosa to name few. National Braai day takes place on Heritage Day. Cyril Ramaphosa, former unionist and activist and now extremely rich business tycoon and director of Lonmin mines made an R18 million bid for a 4 years and 10-month-old buffalo bull with horns measuring 130.5cm. Ramaphosa apologised for making this bid. Cyril said it was a lack of insight on his part to bid for the buffalo. "I regret it because it is an excessive price in the sea of poverty. I belong to a community and it was one of those moments when I was blind-sighted". Many of his close comrades have "chastised" him for this incident.

Arab Spring - One Year Later

Violence has flared up  again due to an amateurish movie, which portrays the prophet as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester. The violence has let to the death of at least 30 people in seven countries, including the American ambassador to Libya. In Kabul, eight South Africans were killed when an explosives-laden car, steered by a 22-year-old woman, ploughed into the side of their minibus. The explosion sent the car hurtling almost 50m before it came to a stop – a smouldering and gutted wreck. Zapiro's cartoon shows how the Arab spring initially a  movement where the pious and the secular, the liberals and the conservatives, the Facebook generation and the factory workers all joined together to achieve democracy and freedom of speech. One year later, there is a violent anti-free speech reaction  and one can question the possibilty of marrying Islamic ideals with democratic practices

Never has so MUCH been SUED by so FEW

Topless photographs of Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing topless were published in French magazine the Closer. An Italian magazine published by Silvio Berlusconi's group followed by re-printing those photos in a special 38 page edition. Buckingham Palace is furious. The British public is furious so much so that one newspaper asks  with tongue in cheek: Will Angry British Mobs Storm Embassies, Killing People? The Kate Middleton topless photos have certainly reignited the debate over how far the paparazzi can go in pursuit of the Royals. Britain's royals are now embarking on a legal battle to try to stop the spread of the topless photos. Zapiro's cartoon recalls one of Winston Churchills famous speeches "Never was so much owed by so many to so few" made on 20 August 1940

All Animals are Equal

"All South Africans are equal, regardless of colour, race or creed." "President Zuma wishes to remind those who were concerned by the remarks that South Africa is a constitutional democracy and the rights of all citizens are guaranteed in the Constitution," his office said in a statement. The most important commandment of Animalism in George Orwell's Animal farm is, "All Animals are  Equal". Zapiro basis his cartoon on this commandment, where  Jacob Zuma plays the role of Napolean the young pig who manipulates the situation to his advantage.

That's OUR Job

Malema has had a busy few weeks, speaking to a wide range of people, from striking miners to protesting soldiers. The "so-called" champion of the poor has no official role after being expelled from the ruling African National Congress, but has taken his radical rhetoric and populism to the mines, where he has been greeted like a rock star by frustrated workers. President Jacob Zuma's government is facing sharp criticism for giving the strategy-savvy Malema an opening to push his radical views in a country known for violent protests and strikes.
