Mac Maharaj, Zuma's Spin Doctor replaces Charles Schultz' Lucy

Based on Charles Schultz' Peanuts comic strip, Zapiro draws Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj, Jacob Zuma's spin doctor with his head spinning after he tries to interpret Zuma's withdrawing all charges against Zapiro and the Sunday Times and paying 50% of the costs as a victory for the Zuma camp. The case wasn't dropped because Jacob Zuma saw the light and error of his ways. The fact is that the case was dropped because Zuma and the ANC cannot afford the bad press so close (approximately two months) to Mangaung.

Zuma capitulates in trial against Zapiro and Sunday Times

After the publication of the 'Rape of Justice' on the 7th September 2008 in Sunday Times, Zuma sues both the Sunday Times and Zapiro, the cartoonist for R5 million. After 4 years, the case is assigned to start on 25th October 2009. A few days  before the case is supposed to start, Zuma's legal team, drop the dignity claim of R1 million. They also reduce the defamation damages amount from R4 million to R 100,000.  In return, they ask for an unconditional apology and try legal and technical arguments to postpone the case. Zapiro and the Sunday Times reject this offer as well as the request to postpone the case.  The case gets postponed to the 29th October as Zuma cannot appear in Court on the 25th and his lawyers dont work work on the Friday afterwards. However late on Friday the 26th October, Zuma capitulates withdrawing all charges leaving Zapiro and the Sunday Times as victors. Was this a case of poltical bullying and intimidation?

Cyril Ramaphosa in the Rake's Progress

Zapiro's cartoon is a parady on William Hogarth's A Rake's Progress (1733), where he tells the story of , a young man who follows a path of vice and self-destruction after inheriting a fortune from his miserly father. Likewise this cartoon shows the moral rise and fall of Cyril Ramaphosa.

Eskom execs screwing the consumers

Eskom’s latest tariff application sees them asking the National Energy Regulator of South Africa to approve hikes that would increase the cost of electricity by 16 percent a year for the next five years. This effectively means that consumers would be paying almost double what we’re paying now, in five years.

Yes We Can, But We Did n't

Obama is neck and neck in the 2012 election battle. In 2008, Obama was swept into office with much hope that he would make radical changes. His YES WE CAN speech became a slogan for many. After four years in office, nothing seems to have changed and the slogan has become a cliche.

Public Protector under Attack

Pressure is mounting on the public protector, Thuli Madonsela, as parliament prepares to investigate her and how she runs the Chapter 9 institution. She is presently investigating the development of a R2 billion town in President Jacob Zuma's home village of Nkandla. This investigation would be conducted separately from the investigation into the development of Zuma's Nkandla residence.

Zuma calls for CEOs to freeze their salary while he increases his own

President Jacob Zuma waded into South Africa’s churning labour crisis on 17th October with a call for striking miners to return to work and for CEOs to freeze their pay, amid months of industrial unrest and bloodshed that threaten to derail the nation’s economy. This appeal comes in the background of his own recent pay hike, the rising costs of his home in Nkandla and the cost of keeping all his wives.

The New Age axes their Cartoonist

Taken from Jeremy Nell's website

No more political cartoons for a while

My contract at The New Age has been terminated, by the newspaper, because my political cartoons "are not aligned with the paper’s vision and mission."

The newspaper offered me the position as their inaugural editorial cartoonist when they launched in 2010 and, after a brilliant three years of drawing for The Times (where I was also the inaugural cartoonist), I accepted the new challenge. And it proved to be a good decision personally, because the new (larger) space afforded me a fair degree of independence and the opportunity to experiment with my drawings and concepts and whatnot.

But as time (and editors) passed by, The New Age's editorial stance became increasingly out of sync with mine. This was particularly apparent when the current editor recently told me that he doesn't "like cartoons [that make] political judgements or statements". My satire can't really function under such constraints.

Nevertheless, I had a great time, learnt a lot, submitted over 500 cartoons, worked with some superb individuals, and am proud of every cartoon that I drew for The New Age.

So, where to now? Well, I might draw something (political) now and then for my website, but I will be taking a short-ish break to refresh my thoughts, get some sleep, and work on other projects. A hiatus of sorts.

Thanks, as always, for the support.

Freefall record - Lance Armstrong versus Felix Baumgartner

Felix Baumgartner is an Austrian skydiver, daredevil and BASE jumper. On 14 October 2012, he set the world record for skydiving an estimated 39 kilometres, reaching an estimated speed of 1,342 kilometres per hour, or Mach 1.24. Lance Armstrong, the legend of cycling and seven times winner of the Tour de France cycling race, has been discovered to be “serial drug cheat” of the worst kind by the US Anti-doping Agency (Usada).. Once a hero and role model is now in "freefall". Zapiro's cartoon compares the two.

Zuma's 'electrifying' ANC re-election stunt.

David Blaine is an American illusionist and endurance artist known for his high-profile feats of endurance. According to Zapiro's cartoon, Blaine gets his stunt idea of standing in the middle of a one million-volt lightning storm from Zuma's electrifying ANC re-election stunt. Even after Nklanda, Simelane, Marikana and corruption charges over his head, it appears that Jacob Zuma has got enough votes to secure a 2nd term in office.
