101222mg 10 12 22 22 Dec 2010 Mail & Guardian The Last Sushi While Leonardo's 'Last Supper' was the well-known biblical scene just before Good Friday, Zapiro's 'Last Sushi' appears just before Christmas. Cartoon illustrates the 'good life' of certain ANC politicians and their related business partners. Earlier in the year, South African Business tycoon Kenny Kunene threw a whopping party, where participants ate sushi served up on naked female models. Zwelinzima Vavi head of Cosatu (also appearing in the cartoon, but refusing to join the party) considered the R700000 spent on such an event as immoral, while the majority of South Africans live in poverty.

Self-satisfied Sepp Blatter hands over R680 million to SAFA as a reward for a successful world cup

Fifa’s overall profits from the World Cup 2010 are an estimated US $ 3.2 billion coming exclusively from sponsorship deals and television rights. Ticket sales revenue was over R5 billion rand. Part of the deal is to provide a bonus to the host country. Fifa gave a total of about R680 million to South Africa. R130 million helped to finance the building SAFA house. The remaining amount will be put into a trust fund (2010 FIFA Legacy Trust). The goal of the fund is to develop South African football. While this looks generous, it is less than 1% of profits that FIFA made from the 2010 world cup.

Zapiro's cartoon compares this 'bonus donation' with a man tipping a prostitute.

101216mg 10 12 16 16 Dec 2010 Mail & Guardian Zuma sues Zapiro et al for R 5 million Two years after the publication of the rape of Lady Justice cartoon, Jacob Zuma’s lawyers finally file papers with the Johannesburg High Court, suing Avusa and Zapiro for R5 million plus 15.5% interest per annum. It raises the question why has Zuma decided to this now more than two years after the event. This action, as the cartoon suggests brings even more exposure for Zapiro. This is not the first time that Zuma has threatened or tried to intimidate Zapiro. In 2006, Zuma demanded a record R15 million for damage to his reputation from Zapiro. In 2007, the ANC proposed to censor showerhead cartoons. In 2008, once more Zuma demanded another R7 million for defamation. None of these past cases ever reached the court. This latest one has.
