110317mg 11 03 17 17 Mar 2011 Mail & Guardian Does Eskom do enough to ensure safety at its Nuclear Power Stations?

Zapiro's cartoon highlights the fact that Eskom, like any other power company in the world, needs to think of safety factors and in particular the radiation factor, when developing nuclear power facilities of their own. This comes in the wake of the disasters that struck several Japanese nuclear facilities.

In September 2010, radiation contamination at one of South Africa's nuclear power station affected its workers during maintenance. Eskom's spokesman said recently that due to its "nuclear safety culture", Eskom was "well-equipped" to have nuclear power stations.

110317tt 11 03 17 17 Mar 2011 The Times Japan's latest disaster starts world-wide debate about nuclear energy

The earthquake disaster in Japan rattkes international markets and prompts debate over nuclear power as a major energy source. This event is the worst catastrophe the nuclear industry has faced since a reactor explosion and fire at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine in 1986 spewed radioactive material across the northern hemisphere.
