The disaster in Japan at Fukushima makes the world re-think its policy over the future of nuclear power. In today's consumer-oriented society, there is more and more demand for electricity to carry out day-to-day functions. Until now, nuclear power is often quoted as the answer to a 'clean' source. Not if we consider the damage caused by leaked radiation. Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant accidents following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami emphasize the problems of using nuclear fission to generate power. The future of 30 proposed nuclear reactors in the United States, has now been thrown into jeopardy, while the world anxiously watches efforts to control the spread of radiation. The shifting landscape of public opinion since the accident recalls the hysteria after similar incidents at Three Mile Island in 1979 and Chernobyl in 1986. In Zapiro's cartoon, we see the 'nuclear energy' going down the drain.

Wanted for fraud, alleged mafia kingpin, Radovan Krejcir hands himself over to the police. His lawyers apply to both Bheki Cele and Gauteng police commissioner, Mzwandile Petros to cancel the arrest warrant. Instead of the warrant and handcuffs, they want him summonsed to court. Last year extradiction hearings were reopened after an unsuccessful request from the Czech Republic was made in 2008. After fleeing from the Czech Republic and arriving in South Africa, Krejcir has been surrounded by the the local underworld. He claims that people are simply drawn to his money.

After topping their section, including a dramatic win over the favourites India, the Proteas, South Africa's cricket team fail to win a knock out match at the ICC Cricket World Cup. Chasing a meagre 222, the middle order batsmen collapse after a comfortable position of 108 for 2. Historically, New Zealand has over-achieved given its population and world ranking and South Africa has failed to handle the pressure in the big matches that count. Proteas lose to New Zealand by 49 runs and continue to have the label: The Chockers.

While South Africa tightens the screws on Libya with an asset freeze on transactions linked to Gaddafi, defence equipment manufacturer Denel was still exploring potential arms sales in Libya. Gaddafi was an important funder of the ANC and supported Zuma in his leadership campaign to become president.
