The disaster in Japan at Fukushima makes the world re-think its policy over the future of nuclear power. In today's consumer-oriented society, there is more and more demand for electricity to carry out day-to-day functions. Until now, nuclear power is often quoted as the answer to a 'clean' source. Not if we consider the damage caused by leaked radiation. Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant accidents following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami emphasize the problems of using nuclear fission to generate power. The future of 30 proposed nuclear reactors in the United States, has now been thrown into jeopardy, while the world anxiously watches efforts to control the spread of radiation. The shifting landscape of public opinion since the accident recalls the hysteria after similar incidents at Three Mile Island in 1979 and Chernobyl in 1986. In Zapiro's cartoon, we see the 'nuclear energy' going down the drain.
