Zapiro's cartoon highlights the fact that Eskom, like any other power company in the world, needs to think of safety factors and in particular the radiation factor, when developing nuclear power facilities of their own. This comes in the wake of the disasters that struck several Japanese nuclear facilities.

In September 2010, radiation contamination at one of South Africa's nuclear power station affected its workers during maintenance. Eskom's spokesman said recently that due to its "nuclear safety culture", Eskom was "well-equipped" to have nuclear power stations.
