He has had an on-off relationship with Bafana, and refused to accept a call-up in May 2007 after an ugly row with the South African Football Association. The striker blamed the SAFA for demonising him during the Nations Cup finals in Egypt over a pay dispute. He refused to play again until he was given an apology, and although former coach Carlos Alberto Parreira did appear to come to a compromise with the striker, he was then left out of this year’s Nations Cup squad. Salva Kiir was officially sworn-in on as the first president of the newly-created Republic of South Sudan.
South Sudan is the 193rd country to join the United Nations. While it has a pretty flag as suggested in Zapiro's cartoon, there are still many problems to solve in particular the lack of infrastructure. Africa’s newest nation will also join the ranks of the world’s least-developed countries because of decades of war and neglect by the government in Khartoum.
