With SAAB admitting that they paid 24 million Rand to their partners BAE in order to clinch the arms deal in South Africa, Anwa Dramat of the Hawks find it difficult to refuse not to open the arms deal probe, which they had previously closed. Two Hawks investigators will approach relevant authorities in Sweden (the Swedish National Anti-Corruption Unit) and the UK (Serious Fraud Office) to assess information to determine whether there’s a criminal case to be answered in South Africa.

President Jacob Zuma's Legal Advisors

In June, President Jacob Zuma extended Chief Justice Ngcobo's 12-year term to which he initially agreed but later declined. The procedure in the way Zuma exyended Ngcobo's term was criticized and the Constitutional Court itself found it unconstitutional. It was felt by many that Zuma had been ill-advised by his lawyers as they should have known better.

Both the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela and the Hawks confirmed that they had received a requests to investigate ANCYL leader Julius Malema. This was after City Press had reported that Malema was the sole trustee of a secret family trust, which he allegedly used to bankroll his lavish lifestyle.

st 20110728zg July The Times /Cartoons/m_110728mg.jpg 110721mg Just a week ago Julius Malema was happy to face the media himself and declare that he is fully tax-compliant, is in no way involved in corruption, and and isn't exchanging favours or accepting obligations in return for money. Oh, and that he remains ideologically poor, because he comes from poverty, despite living a rich man's lifestyle. But after City Press on the weekend published details about where the money comes from, with a very clear link between Malema's finances and government tenders, it suddenly became an organisational matter. Asked where Malema was, the answer was exactly the same as Malema's when asked how he funded his lifestyle: “none of your business”.
