Salva Kiir was officially sworn-in on as the first president of the newly-created Republic of South Sudan.

South Sudan is the 193rd country to join the United Nations. While it has a pretty flag as suggested in Zapiro's cartoon, there are still many problems to solve in particular the lack of infrastructure. Africa’s newest nation will also join the ranks of the world’s least-developed countries because of decades of war and neglect by the government in Khartoum.
