ANCYL Public Relations (Swearing) Policy

ANCYL spokesman uses the F-word several times at journalist, when he tries to interview Julius Malema. After being criticised from all sides including the mother organisation itself, the ANCYL says the incident is unfortunate and will never happen again.

You have reached the office of Floyd Shivambu

...To go get F*#@ED, Press 2

st 20110714tt July The Times /Cartoons/m_110714tt.jpg 110714tt Johannesburg - It is "unacceptable" for anyone speaking on behalf of the ANC to swear to get their point across, ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete said on Tuesday. She was responding to questions about ANC Youth League spokesperson Floyd Shivambu who reportedly said "fuck you" to a journalist who called him about a story. "I totally disagree with any bad language being used by anybody who is communicating on behalf of any part of the ANC," she said at a media briefing at Luthuli House, Johannesburg central. "I think that's regrettable, its not language to be used... I'm saying anybody expressing themselves in a way that's swearing at anybody, it is unacceptable. "You don't use language like that, you don't have to swear at people or be rude to people to make your point. "You can make your point using decent language." I don't have a problem Media 24 Investigations journalist Jacques Dommisse called Shivambu to speak to ANCYL president Julius Malema about a supposedly lavish three-day safari he took before the league's elective conference last month. The conversation "turned ugly". "I said fuck you," Shivambu can be heard saying on a recording made by Dommisse. Dommisse then asked if he was swearing at him, Shivambu replied "yes". "Why do you do that," said Dommisse. "Because you cannot force yourself to speak to people if they do not speak to you, what is your problem?" said Shibamvu.

Transcript of the actual telephone call between Floyd Shivambu (FD) and reporter Jacques Dommisse (JD)

JD: So, why did you put the phone down?
FS: Hey?

JD: Why did you put the phone down?
FS: Hey man. You are doing a wild goose chase. I say that if you want to go ahead and write, go ahead and write because he won’t speak to you. It never happened, okay? He [Malema] doesn’t want to talk to you.

JD: Why will you not let me speak to Malema?
FS: I said he doesn’t want to. Why must he speak to you? He has no obligation to speak to you.

JD: Because he is a politician.
FS: Yes, but I said no. You cannot force people to speak to you.

JD: I don’t understand?
FS: He will not speak to you. You cannot force someone to speak to you if they do not want to speak to you. He does not want to speak to you. I have just spoken to him.

JD: How do you know he doesn’t want to speak to me?
FS: Because I just spoke to him now.

JD: How do you mean you have just spoken with him? I don’t understand.
FS: Fuck you.

JD: Say again?
FS: I said: “Fuck you”

JD: Are you swearing at me?
FS: Yes.

JD: Why are you doing that?
FS: What is your problem?

JD: I have no problem.
FS: Fuck you. Fuck off, ok.

JD: Oh, so you now said it for the fourth time?
FS: Yes.

JD: Can you please give me a contact number for Julius Malema?
FS: I don’t want.

JD. Ok. Thank-you. Goodbye.
