Today, I’m speaking with you about my recent book’s journey.

That is where I am now in the publishing and marketing of my most recent book.

There were many steps, and I don’t want to oversimplify them.

This is Kurt B. Ellis, an author who self-publishes with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing.

When and How It All Began

My New Year’s resolution this year was to publish my recent book.

I started writing it back in 2018 before I retired. I did much of my writing during business trips to break my boredom during flights.

My original concept came from trying to develop an out-of-the-box theme that was purposely ironic to current events.

That is, to look at world events and flip them in a way that would be totally opposite to conventional norms.

And then I sprinkled in the sense of edginess that I took from “The Game of Thrones” series by George R.R. Martin.

And lastly, I coupled some aspects of my previous professions.

So, you can see, this book is a combination of a spin on current events, inspiration from other authors, and my work experiences.

The Process to Publication

The writing was completed in January of this year.

I then edited my book with Microsoft Editor and Grammarly Premium and had my daughter review it.

After that step, I secured an editor and sent it away for an external review.

At that same time, I secured a cover designer.

I then set up the Amazon KDP required formats for Kindle and paperback versions.

I submitted it to Amazon and got my recent book published in March 2022.

The Next Steps

The next step was to market the book. Because you see, you’ve got to get your book noticed.

There are many millions of books published annually. And each new book is competing with millions of other books worldwide.

To compete, you’ve got to get your book noticed by readers, that is, to move it from the bottom of the ocean of books to the top so it can be hooked by book anglers.

And that is not so easy. It’s a continuous process of establishing and refining words and phrases about your book and modifying the book’s metadata.

And using all types of social media to get your books noticed.

And using a website to promote your books.

And using ad campaigns to promote your books.

Do this process, review it, refine it, and repeat it multiple times.

This may be referred to as content marketing. And it is pretty promising once you’ve built a trusted reader base.

So you can say that I am now in the middle of content marketing.

About Kurt and His Latest Book

This is the first book in the series, “Earth, Altered Existence,” and it’s available on Amazon as a Kindle and a paperback.

Foundational Principles?

In my book, a new society was formed after women seized power and took control of men. So naturally, women wanted to correct the wrongs of the past, especially to become better stewards of Earth.

However, they also never wanted to become vulnerable to men again. Thus, two fundamental principles became part of an overarching creed to address their concerns.

One critical principle was about respecting Earth. The women agreed to not squander Earth’s resources by wasting or hoarding.

This meant that humans must control their population growth. Ultimately, the size of the human population could never again grow to deplete Earth’s resources.

A second critical principle was women’s fear of men. Never again did women want to be controlled or be subservient to men.

The women addressed this fear by maximizing their height and body size and creating their own military.

The women used a well-defined selective breeding plan to address solutions to both critical principles.

Of course, the selective breeding plan controlled many aspects of life. However, the main control points were women’s height and size and human population growth.

And this breeding plan was all done at the expense of men.

Who are the chief protagonists of my book?

There are two chief protagonists in my book. Sure, there are lesser characters, but these two set up the foundations of the new society, and one protagonist is ultimately controlled by the other.

Cara is one of the key protagonists. She was strong-willed, intelligent, and a highly successful and respected medical professional in the previous world.

Cara was also quite beautiful. She had lived through a world of sexism, misogyny, and racism. Yet unfortunately, her beauty made her vulnerable.

During the post-apocalyptic doom, Cara suffered tremendously at the hands of her male captors. However, after overcoming brief thoughts of suicide, she managed to survive and became even more vital to the surviving women.

Great Mother is the other key protagonist. As the overarching omnipotent power over Earth, she is “God-like” and controls everything.

Enraged by how men have treated women over the last millenniums, she flipped the structure of the new society, similar to how she flipped the new Earth.

After settling old scores, Great Mother got her revenge, and women became responsible for every aspect of society and life. In contrast, the men became dispensable pawns.

Great Mother uses Cara as her vessel to set up this rigid dystopian society. Great Mother controls Cara’s thoughts and words and uses Cara to seek revenge on men.

But, does Great Mother go too far? Or does she not go far enough? And perhaps, do you see any ironic parallels to today’s societal events?

Plot vs. Theme?

Have you ever wondered the difference between a book’s plot and theme?

The plot is what happens or what the book is about. Or you could say it’s the sequence of events that make up the story.

In contrast, the theme is the central message or perception that the book conveys.

What is the main plot of My Book?

The main plot of my book is about a new society formed after Earth’s upheaval and destruction.

Guided by omnipotent powers, this rigid dystopian society is unlike anything ever experienced by humankind.

Initially, the surviving humans struggle to live in this harsh new world.

However, with strength, grit, and perseverance, a new society is formed that expels the conventional norms usually known by humans.

What is the central theme of My Book?

The central theme of my book is that humans are critically flawed and prone to conflict regardless of how they live.

And no matter how any new society is structured, humans will find a way to segregate themselves and establish superiority over one another.

And that, in and of itself, is one of our most significant weaknesses.
