The novel’s title is “Boy in the Barn: Journey of Triumph Over Horrific Child Abuse, Sexual Abuse, and PTSD.”
This book was based on my life. It begins with my horrible childhood and continues through my remarkable journey of survival and recovery.
It highlights my lifelong struggles with low self-esteem, crippling anxiety, and depression. Finally, it focuses on my determination to survive PTSD and my steel will to succeed and make something out of myself.
This book starts with a rough beginning and ends on a high note. It demonstrates how a severely repressed person, like myself, can overcome their depression and traumas and excel toward a life of greatness.
The most important messages in my novel are the words of encouragement I offer to abuse victims from the heart of a person who’s actually experienced childhood sexual abuse. My underlying message is simple. If I can do this, you can too!
It is my sincere hope that this novel will provide inspiration and support to other sexually abused people or those who were suppressed by events in life beyond their control.
If I can reach at least one sexually abused person, I feel I will have met my goal.
My inspiring LGBTQIA+ coming-of-age story is about hope, courage, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Why Write a Book about Child Abuse?My experience with childhood sexual abuse began when I was six, and it traumatized me and loomed over me like a dark cloud my entire life.
Since retiring from public work, I embarked on a promise I made myself many years ago.
I have always wanted to share my story. And now that I have time to commit to writing, I began earnestly assembling this book.
You see, boyhood sexual abuse is often overlooked and poorly understood. This is because males are conditioned by society to stay quiet and suffer in silence.
Sexually abused males are a silent minority. It has not been acceptable for males to speak out until the last few years.
But staying quiet and suffering without support or help can lead to additional traumas in the survivor’s life. Not all, but many survivors have many other issues to deal with as a direct result of their sexual abuse.
My writing loosely began in my forties. My EMDR therapist suggested that I journal to help my recovery process.
This journal of memories grew over the years and became the foundation for my book.
This book covers in detail the many horrid memories of my past, the resulting trauma, my fears and anxiety, and my feelings of despair, hopelessness, and low self-worth.
It details how I struggled to overcome my demons and pull myself out of my quagmire of depression.
It illustrates how childhood sexual abuse follows throughout life: affecting choices, decisions, religion, marriage, divorce, career, and so on.
Knowing that I survived my ordeal and became a valued contributor to society proves that one can overcome abuse and trauma. I’m not saying this was easy, but I still managed to thrive regardless of how bad things were.
And if I can do this, you can too!

As a sexually abused child, did you grow up living with shame?

Hi. This is Kurt B. Ellis, an author who self-publishes with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing.
My book is about a little boy that grew up in the south during the repressive 1960s and was horribly sexually abused.
My soon-to-be-released realistic fiction book was inspired by actual events in my lifetime.
My story is centered around my life: a life that has been a journey from early boyhood sexual abuse and its effects, my struggles to overcome severe PTSD, my unwavering determination to survive, and my dogged determination to succeed and make something out of myself.

Shame as a ChildMy sexual abuse began when I was six and lasted eleven years. I was threatened that I could be killed if I talked.
Out of fear, I never spoke to a soul about this. I never shared it with anyone.
By the second grade, I remember starting school with deep shame and embarrassment about what was happening to me.
I lived in constant fear of being discovered. I knew that kids could be cruel and would use this knowledge to taunt and humiliate me at school.
I felt they would not understand or even want to understand. I feared being objectified as the sexually-abused boy.
I became hyper-vigilant, keenly aware of my surroundings, about who spoke and what was said. Being ever so careful to pick up on the slightest comment.
I became paranoid at a very young age.
In middle school, my primary abuser outed me to fulfill his sick need to ridicule me further. And in doing so, he blamed me for my own sexual abuse.
I immediately became a target and was humiliated with public taunts: homo, faggot, queer, cock sucker. And further humiliation followed with ridicule in the men’s bathroom.
I became pee-shy and lived with shy bladder syndrome into adulthood.
I withdrew as much from school society as I could. Becoming an introvert, I only associated with limited trusted friends and tried to avoid public places.
I often took lunch and my breaks alone, in isolation.
Shame as an AdultMy shame continued into adulthood and followed me throughout my entire career until retirement.
I worked in the agricultural industry: a job where male dominance, machismo, toxic masculinity, and paternalism were the norm.
Men were men, and weak men or those with the perception of weakness were ridiculed and often given less opportunity to advance.
So as an adult, again, I was hyper-vigilant and a bit paranoid.
But by this time, I became good at exhibiting a hardened outer shell where I wouldn’t let co-workers get too close to me.
I insulated myself well and managed to survive without any incidence of ridicule about my childhood sexual abuse.
In summary, this is just another example of how the effects of childhood sexual abuse can last a lifetime.

Victim Blaming and GaslightingMy sexual abuse began when I was six and lasted eleven years.
My sadistic older brother abused me and later tried to convince me I was responsible for my own abuse.
When I initially accused him of abusing me, he tried to convince me that I was crazy and lying. So, according to him, I made up this story to get him in trouble.
He attempted to convince me that I was the aggressor; I seduced him, wanted to be abused, and was a willing participant.
You see, he flipped the situation around, and, of course, he was the helpless victim.
At the same time, he tried to get into my head. He used threats, coercion, manipulation, and emotional extortion to control and silence me.
Do you see how any of this does not fit?
During my abuse, I mentally slipped into a world of lies and denials where I pretended that everything was ok regardless of the physical and psychological scars I was accumulating.
I repressed my trauma and had moments where I questioned my thoughts. I questioned my own reality.
Looking back on it, I now realize my brief mental confusion and denialism were a self-preservation mechanism. Nevertheless, this was precisely where my brother wanted me to be.
Years later, in my forties, I obtained much-needed EMDR therapy and worked through my multiple layers of trauma. And I learned then that I was a victim of what we now know as classical gaslighting.
That is, my abuser grossly misled me for his own advantage. Gaslighting is usually a very effective tool for an abuser to control the abused.
And gaslighting was used quite effectively by my brother during the 1960s and 70s before it became a popular term of daily dialogue.

Traumatic Triggers? New Book Coming Soon: Journey of Triumph Over Horrific Boyhood Sexual Abuse
Have you suffered from triggers as a result of your childhood sexual abuse trauma?
Traumatic triggers can be a simple passage from a song on the radio, a television show, a movie, something you’ve read, or perhaps an off comment by someone you’ve met.
Other triggers, for example, can come from abrupt sounds, odors, and various environmental factors. And, of course, from many other things as well.
Triggers can elicit an emotional and physical response that will take you back to the horrible event you experienced earlier in life.
Triggers are unique to the person and their specific traumatic experience. Therefore, what may trigger one person may not necessarily be experienced by the next.
Triggers can last a lifetime, but there is some hope; triggers can be less intense and less frequent with support and therapy.
As an adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse who is now in his sixties, I have recently dealt with a trigger.

My book is about a little boy that grew up in the south during the repressive 1960s and was horribly sexually abused.

My Recent Triggering ExperienceMy sexual abuse began when I was six and lasted eleven years.
As an adult, I’ve had to deal with triggers, amongst many other issues. At my lowest since my sexual abuse, I needed much help and therapy in my early forties.
I finally found help with EMDR therapy, which was a game-changer. My flashbacks and nightmares immediately stopped, and I got my life back on track.
My therapist sternly warned me that I might deal with triggering events for the rest of my life. And to be careful, protective, and try to avoid potential triggering events.
And yes, I did have a few triggering events for the next ten years. But then, amazingly, in my early fifties, my triggers seemed to stop. So I honestly thought that triggers were behind me.
In November 2022, I was at my son’s home babysitting my grandchildren while my son and his wife were on a vacation. I got the children to bed and thought I would watch a little TV. So I picked Margaret Atwood’s: The Handmaid’s Tale.
I came to the slut shaming scene a few episodes in, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. With my head spinning, I lay alone on the couch, crying profusely, wrapped in my arms to console myself. I had just remembered another horrid detail I had suppressed for over fifty years.
This memory was so vivid with such incredible detail. It became another repressed event that I decided to write about in my upcoming book.
So, in my case, traumatized sexual abuse victims can suffer triggers at any time, even when they think they are over them.
The good news is that I rationalized my fears and recovered from this trigger quite quickly, not letting it get me down.

Why Tell Now? New Book Coming Soon: Triumph Over Horrific Boyhood Sexual Abuse
As an adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse who is now in his sixties, I have finally decided to go public with my story. This is a decision that I have not taken lightly and have wrestled with for a lifetime.
My reason for sharing my story is that I sincerely hope to reach at least one other person, like me, who has suffered tremendously from sexual abuse to provide them with inspiration and support

What Motivated You to Go Forward with your Story?There were many reasons why I delayed going forward with my story.
As a young man, I was in a bit of denial. I coped, then, by stuffing and burying the horrid memories in the deepest caverns of my consciousness.
I desperately wanted to believe that all the horrible things that happened to me were not true, that maybe, or perhaps just confused memories rattling around in my head. At least, then, that was what I had convinced myself.
As I grew older and life settled and calmed down, I began to have flashbacks. The cruel and horrid details came back fast and furious like a never-ending avalanche. Tormenting my reality, these memories forced me to accept the truth. The truth, I could no longer deny.
After some much-needed mid-life therapy, I was encouraged to journal my memories and to continue recovering. This journal of my recovery became the basis of my book, which I have worked on for the last twenty years.
Many in my home community, including family, will blast and condemn me for finally speaking out.
They will say things like, “How dare you do this! Why drag this up now? What is to be gained for coming out with this story after all these years?”
They would much rather I remain silent and take this quietly to my grave like those before and after me. But, you see, according to them, it should be done that way because that was what was expected in that society, to suffer silently and not bring shame to your family or community.
They will not try to understand, or better yet, even want to understand, the benefit to suffering victims for sharing one’s stories.
To help others to know that they are not alone. And to help others with much-needed resources.
Instead, they will scoff at these benefits because these will not fit into the ideals of their society which continue today.
I have arrived at a place in my life where I feel compelled to act, to break the bonds of secrets and chains of silence, to finally expose those perpetrators of years before for what they really are.
Because if this systemic abuse is still occurring today, I hope I can reach and help the current victims.
At the time, I thought I was alone. But nevertheless, I am confident I was not the only victim.
You see, boyhood sexual abuse is often overlooked and misunderstood. This is because males are conditioned by society to stay quiet and suffer in silence.
Sexually abused males are a silent minority. It has not been acceptable for males to speak out until the last few years.
But staying quiet and suffering without support or help can lead to additional traumas in one’s life.
Not all, but many survivors have many other issues to deal with as a direct result of their sexual abuse.
Thus, all the more reason to speak out and help out now.

Psychological Fallout? New Book Coming Soon: Triumph Over Horrific Boyhood Sexual Abuse

My book is about a little boy that grew up in the south during the repressive 1960s and was horribly sexually abused. After his abuse, he suffered tremendously from psychological fallout.
My soon-to-be-released realistic fiction book was inspired by actual life events.
My story is centered around this man’s life: a life that is a journey from early boyhood sexual abuse and its effects, his struggles to overcome, his unwavering determination to survive, and his dogged determination to succeed and make something out of himself.

What are the Psychological Effects of Childhood Sexual Abuse?So, what are some of the psychological effects of childhood sexual abuse? One could write a book about this.
Nevertheless, how one deals with childhood sexual abuse as an adult varies from victim to victim, yet, there are some commonalities.
The primary victim in my book mainly dealt with tremendous shame, embarrassment, humiliation, and inadequacy.
In addition, he dealt with years of low self-esteem, suicide attempts, anxiety, depression, flashbacks, and severe PTSD.
He initially coped by withdrawing into a make-believe world where lies, denials, and suppressed memories gave him solace during his abuse.
For a while, he thought he would get by in his false reality. Yet, in his early forties, the horrid memories of his painful abuse and torment resurfaced with a vengeance.
He suffered for years with trust issues in relationships.
As a young man, he felt used, cheapened, and dirty, like discarded, soiled laundry, too worn to be used again.
He felt like he was damaged goods and unworthy of a meaningful relationship.
He acted out with rampant promiscuity with women, then faithfully gave marriage a try, which ended later in divorce.
After his divorce, he turned to promiscuity with men.
All during this time, he never felt he had a genuine emotional connection, constantly feeling empty inside.
It was not until his mid-fifties that he grew into a meaningful, trusting relationship with a man he later married.
Clearly, in midlife, he had mental health issues. As a result, he sought much-needed therapy to recover. More on this later.
This is just the beginning. I’ve barely touched the surface of the psychological effects of childhood sexual abuse.

Controlled by Threats? New Book Coming Soon: Triumph Over Horrific Boyhood Sexual Abuse
Did you live through a situation as a child where you were controlled by many threats? Threats, that is, which were being used to force your silence.
Frequently with childhood sexual abuse, the abuser ensures the silence of the abused.

Why are Threats so Dangerous?From the time this boy was relatively small, he was sexually abused and controlled by threats.
He never knew what to believe and even questioned whether what he heard could be true or false.
Yet, he was too young, petite, afraid, and intimidated to challenge his abusers.
He kept silent and continued to comply; that was just what the abusers wanted.
He was made to believe he was somehow responsible for his abuse. That is, he asked for it, encouraged it, and thus, deserved it.
Early on, he was manipulated with fear of more violence and sexual abuse. But as a teenager, controls escalated to coercion, guilt, and extortion. He was blackmailed and held hostage emotionally.
And toward the end of his abuse, he was controlled by death threats. Threats of his disappearance and, even worse, death to ensure his silence.
He was also gaslighted by his primary abuser and, for a while, doubted his memory.
His silence was ensured! He had no one that would, at least, listen to him. As a result, the boy suffered unconscionable types of ever-intensifying sexual abuse repeatedly for many years.
Despite it all, he survived. But his real memories returned as an avalanche when he became an adult.
As a result, later in life, he dealt with extreme PTSD and anxiety, amongst many other problems. More on this later.
So manipulative threats are a form of psychological control that is so very damaging to the abused.
Until the threats stop, are no longer believed, or the abused are strong enough to protect themselves, the abusers continue to do more serious harm.
For this reason, the abused are abused and traumatized even more.

Dangerous Denials? New Book Coming Soon: Triumph Over Horrific Boyhood Sexual Abuse
Did you ever live in a family or community where children were taught to deny their serious problems rather than face them and fix them?
Where children were taught to pretend that bad things did not happen and that the pretending would make the problems disappear.
Hi. This is Kurt B. Ellis, an author who self-publishes with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing.
My book is about a little boy that grew up in the south during the 1960s and was horribly sexually abused. During his abuse, he coped and survived by living in a world of deceptions, lies, pretends, and denials.
As a result, he had many issues later in life while a man.
My soon-to-be-released realistic fiction book was inspired by actual life events.
My story is centered around this man’s life: a life that is a journey from early boyhood sexual abuse and its effects, his struggles to overcome, his unwavering determination to survive, and his dogged determination to succeed and make something out of himself.

Why are Denials so Dangerous?Each time this little boy reached out to get help, he was quickly dismissed and told to deny his abuse and pretend it wasn’t happening.
You see, the parents took the path of least resistance and told their child to simply deny it and not talk about it.
The parent’s rationale was that if you don’t talk about it, well, no one will know, and the problem will simply go away.
But more important to the parents than the fact that their son was being sexually abused was preserving their vane sense of family honor, pride, and community standing.
Foremost in the parent’s minds, they did not want to face this problem publicly, thus ensuring the silence of their abused son.
The boy was lectured that going to his grave with his secret was much better. Keeping the secret was more critical than having family, neighbors, and community talking about him and bringing shame and dishonor to his family name.
He was continuously taught that dishonoring the family should not be on his conscience.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, the boy’s silence was buffered with snippets of Christianity. He was taught that since Jesus Christ suffered quietly while dying on the cross, he, too, should suffer quietly while being abused.
At least for the parents, their vanity and pride were spared. They never had to deal with their son’s abusers or the psychological fallout with the son.
And when the abusers got wind that no one was going to do anything, well then, the frequency and degree of sexual abuse escalated.
As a result, the boy suffered unconscionable types of ever-intensifying sexual abuse repeatedly for many years.
Despite it all, he survived. Yet later in life, he dealt with extreme PTSD and anxiety, amongst many other problems. More on this later.
So denial is certainly no way to deal with sexual abuse. On the contrary, it only gives the green light to the abusers, and they do more serious harm.
As a result, the abused are abused and traumatized even more.
