hot in the city tonight

Yesterday, summer began. Today, it's 92 degrees outside, and only about five degrees cooler than that inside. But that's just how it goes when you live on the top floor of a 100-year-old building that doesn't have air conditioning.

Honestly, I don't mind. I'm actually quite comfortable, but then again, I'm from Florida and I grew up in a household that refused to set the AC any lower than 88 degrees. (I used to joke that it was like living inside the DeLorean with all the windows rolled...

Yes, all these metrics posts are kind of boring.

There's a reason why we call it a "death march" and not a "disco parade".

Here are today's stats on my second urban fantasy adventure — this time with my neurotic undead thief, her shady agent, a cigar box full of magical penis bones, a mentally ill former NASA engineer-turned-sorceress, and the continued fabulosity of a Cuban drag queen:

Project: Hellbent
Deadline: August 9, 2010

A postscript for the week

I forgot to mention this here yesterday (though it came up on Twitter) – but Italian rights have sold … on Bloodshot! No, the book isn't even out yet. Yes, this is a total first – my first Italian sale, and my first rights sale on an as-yet-unpublished project; so it feels like I've grabbed a life-up mushroom and a fireball flower in the same jump.

Which is exactly as cool as it sounds.

Calling All Dog Lovers

…Particularly you dog-lovers living in King George, Virginia (or in the surrounding counties). My friend Andrea – pretty much a one-woman animal-rescuing army – found a marvelous dog in the middle of the road last week. Click that link to read of the adventure, and to see a shot of the very cute, very big yellow lab mix who made himself at home in Andrea's car – which was a very good thing, considering he almost got turned into road pizza.

The dog in question was wearing a collar but no...

As some of you noticed, this site went down for a bit today. For (I think) the first time ever, I exceeded my bandwidth; but my intrepid webmaster (and old friend) Greg sorted it out as soon as he could, and voila – once again I am ready to blog.

So here goes. First! Some loose bullet points:Apex Books hosts a summer of love – Offering digital titles on the cheap, and bargain-basement discounts on one feature book a week. This week's feature is Aegri Somnia – a Stoker-nominated anthology...
