Here are today's stats on my second urban fantasy adventure — this time with my neurotic undead thief, her shady agent, a cigar box full of magical penis bones, a mentally ill former NASA engineer-turned-sorceress, and the continued fabulosity of a Cuban drag queen:

Project: Hellbent

Deadline: August 9, 2010

New words written: 1612 (bah.)

Present total word count: 80,320 words

Things accomplished in fiction: Waved bon voyage to a troublesome new friend; began rehearsal and prep for the big...

Didn't get any writing done today, but my apartment looks awesome, so there's that. It'd kind of hit critical mass around here – that point at which the sheer distraction of living in a dirty home overwhelms my ability to sit still and ignore it. The obvious solution (allowing me to work) would be to tote the laptop to a public locale and set up camp; and the fact is, that's just what I've been doing.

That's … um … one reason the home base has gotten so bad. I put off the housework by...

Bargain Time

So…I just noticed – you can preorder Dreadnought for ten bucks on Amazon.com. Of course, if you'd rather preorder from your local chain or independent bookseller of preference, you are heartily encouraged to do so – but if the discount makes all the difference to your wallet, well, there you go. Heads up.

For more info about Dreadnought, check out its listing at Macmillan – where you will find an excerpt free for your reading pleasure, plus links and other goodies – including a handy-dandy w...

Risk Management in the Emerald City

Articles like this one – What Could Possibly Go Wrong? – have been making the Seattle media rounds for the last few months, basically since the whole "OMG SOON OUR VIADUCT WILL BE DIE!" conclusion led to the idea of drilling a tunnel under the city into which traffic could be funneled.

It may or may not surprise you that at least once or twice per day someone asks me to comment on this.

It's funny. You write a book wherein Seattle is destroyed courtesy of a tunnel-drilling machine that...

Where I'll Be, What I'll Be Doing

As of late, people have been asking me, "Why aren't you doing more local readings/signings when Dreadnought comes out?" The answer has been boring but true: we've been working on it – and this stuff takes time to organize and confirm. But this morning, a number of things fell into place for October, making for several local or semi-local events – plus three out-of-state visits, and one out-of-country excursion.

(All for October alone, yes. I will be a busy lady indeed.)

And to think, just...

July 12, 2010

It's been several days since I've met any of my wordcount goals – which is not the end of the world, but is kind of a pain in the ass. My reasons are many and varied, and mostly legitimate; but the deadline does not care. The deadline has no mercy, nor pity. So for public self-shaming/motivational purposes, I'm going to post today's word count, even though it's nothing short of pathetic.

Ergo, here are today's stats on my second urban fantasy adventure — this time with my neurotic undead t...

A Post which is Ellen's Fault

Following a post I made the other day about some skirts, my friend Ellen said I should do an entry with blurbage about my favorite Etsy sellers – since for the last 2 years, anytime anyone asks me where I got something, the answer is usually "Etsy."

Well. It's not like I got any writing done today – so I don't have any word metrics to post. (Though I did have a most excellent brunch and wandering with the aforementioned Ellen as well as Elaine.)

Anyway, here goes:*

Beyond Clothing – This is ...
