In other news

I want to thank the folks at Seattle Magazine – for they have named me a 2010 Spotlight Award winner, which rocks about eight ways from Sunday. I've known about this for awhile, but they asked me to keep it to myself until the magazine made its announcements, and that was fine with me. Details are available at the link, and in September's issue of the magazine.

Everyone I met for the piece was a pleasure to work with, start to finish. The interviewer was lovely (and a fellow southerner, as...

Heads up

Hey everybody - my main website is down. My awesome Webmaster Greg is flogging the server folks and jabbing them with sharp sticks even as we speak -- so thanks bunches to those of you who've emailed to warn me, but further emailings are not required at this time. We're aware of the issue, and crossing our fingers that all will be well soon.

Thanks again!

Edited to add: Literally MOMENTS after I posted this, it came back up. Excellent! The floggings and the stick-pokings must have worked.

It gives me great w00t to announce that German rights have sold on Boneshaker! For those of you playing the home game, this makes German, Spanish, French, Czech, and Polish … which absolutely blows my mind. As my most excellent agent and I have become so fond of saying: "Go book, go!"

I was going to wait until this afternoon to blog this, but I lost my saving throw vs. self-restraint – so here goes! It is with great and terrible squee that I present part one of The Rat Race … an introductory sample of Wild Cards XXI: Fort Freak, live on George R. R. Martin's website.

[:: Snoopydances like a Snoopy ::]

(Fort Freak is a production of the Wild Cards consortium, edited by Mr. Martin. It is slated for publication in the summer of 2011.)

Mary Robinette Kowal at Powell's

Hey all you Portland-area people: My friend Mary Robinette Kowal will be reading from her fantastic new book Shades of Milk and Honey at the Cedar Hills location of Powell's bookstore this Wednesday, August 11, at 7:00 p.m.

If you've ever met Mary or heard her speak, you know what an exceptionally entertaining carbon-based life form she is – and if you haven't, here's your chance! Consider this my Official Suggestion(tm) that you go check her out if at all possible.

:)

This afternoon I emailed Hellbent off to my editor. I am outstandingly relieved to have it off my plate for now, even though that relief is tempered with all the usual stuff — crippling insecurity that the manuscript sucks, and fear that I've forgotten something, or left an obvious plot hole.

A book like Hellbent is particularly nerve-wracking because it was not bought on the strength of its story, the appeal of its hook, or its awesome premise. Hellbent is a follow-up — book #2 of a...
