Poetry Remains My Haven

Poetry Remains My Haven

By: Azza El Wakeel

Poetry remains my haven

Verses that I dwell in

And they dwell in me

My sentiments flow in them

My blood pours in my ink

I search for myself

Reshape my world

Live my full liberty

Draw my feelings

Pull away with my imagination

Elevate to touch the sky

Tickle the clouds

And the rain falls in my palms

I sit with the moon

Collect the stars

Ornament with them the trees

I love you the way I want

Whenever I want

And summon the spring in winter

I become complete in the presence of inspiration

And in its absence I’m in a state of division

I glow in the presence of the poetry’s devil

And in his absence I’m in a state of disorientation

I don’t know if my poetry for you

Is because I love you

Or I love you to write poetry

I don’t know if the geniality of what I write

Is from my mind or from the Valley of Abqar*

But I know that poetry in my life

Is a desire, gift and estimated destiny

*(In Arab Myths Abqar is the valley where the devils of poetry live)

If You Don’t Mind

If You Don’t Mind

By: Azza El Wakeel

Walk away from my life

Stay away from my sight

‘Cause when I last saw you

I stayed awake all night

Remembering the sand castles

We built together

The sky we touched

The stars we caught

Recalling the promises we made

To be faithful to one another

For our love to live forever

All the feelings I was able to hide

I was able to burry deep in my heart

Awakened in me again, tortured my mind

You betrayed me and killed me once

And once is enough

So if you don’t mind

Stay away from my path

Hide from my life

Allow me to forget you

Allow me to enjoy my life

Say No Words

Say No Words

By: Azza El Wakeel

Say no words

I don’t want to listen

Fear nothing

Tell me nothing

All the wrongs

You’ve done to me

Are forgiven

Tell me no excuses

No whys nor hows

All I want to hear

Are your renewed

Love vows

Step in my garden

Pick some of my ripe grapes

Let’s make our best ever

Love’s wine

Make a toast

Forever I’ll be yours

You’ll be mine

Dig in my mine

Discover all the hidden treasures

You never cared to search, find

Belongs To Gemini’s Sign

Belongs To Gemini’s Sign

By: Azza El Wakeel

You, who belong to Gemini’s sign
Cool like winter wind
Hot like the equator
Deceiving like the mirage
Truthful like torture pains
You, master of postponed promises
You promise me to call
I wait for your ring
It’s never done
You promise me romantic dates
I wait for your arrival
You never come
You, master of surprises
You leave me a victim of grief
Then suddenly show up
To embrace me between the palms
Of your tenderness
You disappear mysteriously
That I don’t know
If your absence will be endless
Did you leave with no return?
Is it farewell?
Or you’re in a state of waning?
My moon with changeable faces
Then you return like a full moon in the sky
Your passion returns after harshness
You, who surprise me like summer rains
Water the desert of my days
Then leave me confused
Not knowing if you’re real
Or a lie in my imagination
You, who belong to Gemini’s sign
Who overspread me like a rising tide
Then withdraw like a falling tide
Who visit me in my night dream
Then sneak away by dawn
You, the far, the near
The lover, the stranger
You, the contradicted twin
I’m exhausted by your moody love
I’m tired of your temperamental style

The Colourful Ribbons

The Colourful Ribbons

By: Azza El Wakeel

I miss the colourful ribbons

Of my tresses

The ones of my kite

Of my key’s chain

The simple things

That brought great joy

I miss my childhood’s books

My colouring books

My piano notes

All my toys

I miss the pure white

Of the snow

That I used to see

Covering the mountains

The pure white

Of the clouds

Of the full moon

I’m no more naïve

Since I matured

My eyes are seeing

All the whites stained

In my youth

I used to think

I’ll grow up to live

Like a butterfly

Free to wander

Fly and circle

From one flower

To another

Like a nightingale

Sing my songs

Without fear

But the world

Disappointed me

It’s full of rains

Lots of tears

Limited are the choices

Wings tied with chains

Frightened nightingales

A Gypsy In A State Of Love

A Gypsy in a State of Love

By: Azza El Wakeel

In an ornamented gypsy’s dress
My tresses decorated with red roses
My neck and wrists with necklaces
And bracelets of gardenia
The jingling of my anklet
Foregoing to your meeting
Announcing my arriving steps
The sound of my castanets
Echoing in the open space
Whenever I beat my tambour
At the beginning of evening
After the sun departed
Leaving a touch of its setting
On my cheeks
My shyness at meeting you
And my timidity’s instinct
The sparkles of stars splitting the sky
The moonlight slipping from concealment
A gypsy in a state of love
Left without an earlier appointment
Sure of my love
Your picture engraved like a tattoo
In my fantasy since birth
Longing for you haunts my insides
Yearning to find you runs in my blood
But after I left to meet you
After waiting so long
After breaking the chains
And overstepping the limits
I woke up from my dream
To discover that my braid
Wasn’t yet undone
I was never decorated with red roses
And gardenia
Never ever wore an anklet

Feelings of fear

I try hard to hide”
