Prosecutors have frozen the accounts of three former top moneymen, including the man who ran the Vatican Bank for 19 years. The charges center around embezzlement in the multi-million dollar sales by the church of dozens of prime Rome properties during the past decade.

Today's NYT reports that ''The Last Nazi,' Alois Brunner, died in Syria four years ago. I tried repeatedly to interview him during the late 1980s when a German professor I had met was in touch with the fugitive war criminal.
