GOD'S BANKERS in 3 of top 4 spots on Amazon 'Banks & Banking'
Three editions (hardcover, Kindle and audio) of GOD'S BANKERS in the top 4 spots on Amazon's Banks & Banking. As my writer friends and colleagues know, it's not often you get to enjoy that. As Trisha Posner says, at a certain point, Pope Francis's interest might be piqued enough to read the copy I sent him....

It's always unfortunately been about the money....
When Trisha Posner said to me today, "Well, some things don't change," I wasn't sure what she meant. Then she showed me an article in the Daily Telegraph about the failed effort of Edda Goring, the only daughter of the former top ranking Nazi leader, to win back family money the government had seized after the Third Reich led Germany to disaster in World War II. It's always been about the money when it comes to Edda. I met with her in 1990 when I was compiling interviews for...

Did a 'John Doe 2' get away 20 years ago today in the Oklahoma City bombing?
Today is the 20th anniversary of the terror bombing of the Murray Federal building in Oklahoma City that killed 168 people and wounded hundreds. Two years after that attack, the New Yorker magazine assigned me to investigate lingering questions about a possible 'John Doe 2.' Second part of my interview on Boom Bust re the Vatican Bank/God's Bankers
The 2nd part of my interview with Erin Ade on Boom Bust. It runs 8 minutes, starting at the 4 minute mark. Among other issues this part of the interview covers how the bank was used during World War II to help the church hide investments in German and Italian insurance companies that earned outsized profits by escheating the life insurance policies of Holocaust victims. I also talk about how top Italian politicians used the bank exclusively for their personal multi-million dollar slush funds,...

The serendipity of my editorial on why Italy and the Vatican must sign a tax sharing deal - followed by the two doing just that....
On March 23, I wrote the "Featured Perspective" for Tax Notes International, a newsletter to tax professionals, from accountants to lawyers to CFOs to government treasury ministers. Titled "The Vatican Bank: Are the Bad Old Days Finally Over?"
It focused on ongoing negotiations between the Vatican and Italy to reach a historic tax exchange agreement (TIEA). That is something that would make it much more difficult for the Vatican Bank to continue to operate as a tax haven for...
