How to Realise Your Dreams
February was filled with dreams coming true for me and I want that for you too.
So, I'm not going to tell you all the stuff you already know, I'm going to let you in on a little-known secret to your success instead:

Keep on trying.
Try something different,
or simply a different approach.
Just keep on trying.
One of my successes in January was to compete in a mini-triathlon. Now to know why this is such a big deal for me, you must understand that I am the girl who spluttered and half drowned her way through the compulsory swimming competitions at school. Hated it. But I'm not going to spoil the story for you because that leads to one of my dreams come true for this month. I've completed the first draft of a short story that takes you on my segue from drowned rat to triathlete, medal included!

My second fabulous dream come true this month involved travel. My sister, Jude, and I had Uluru on our travel dream list. And wow did we experience Uluru.
Dreams really do come true. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine experiencing the spirit of the mountain like we did. It was immersive, spiritual and otherworldly. If you're interested in knowing how we did all that, follow this link to my Pinterest post: Uluru - A most spiritual experience
If this is something out of your realm but you have a travel dream list too, try a different approach.
Perhaps enter competitions for a trip you'd loveSave a dollar a dayWait for ridiculous specialsJude and I cut every expense we could and our budget stay was all the more immersive.
Aside from the writing group I started in January, I've also started a paddling group this month with a bunch of local ladies. Both the first meetings of these groups were so successful that those involved wanted to keep going. Now I'm not a leader of any kind and certainly don't aspire to be a leader, but these are activities that I have wanted to achieve for a very long time. And we all know by now:
There's only one way to achieve goals - keep on trying!
I have thoroughly enjoyed some diverse reads this month. I finally got my own copy of Atomic Habits by James Clear. Another first with books for me is that I have allowed myself the deliciousness of highlighting passages for future reference. Do you highlight important sentences too? I've already seen improvements in my daily tasks from this book, by the way. The following notion came upon me when I considered the many readers who will achieve varying goals after reading Atomic Habits, and I rather like it:
Books unite us in mind,
but set us apart in interpretation.

I was fortunate to nab an ARC copy of a fellow indie author's book, The Inca's Curse, which I loved. It's a new-to-me genre of mystery romance and it's been rather intriguing to discover. The author is Ellen Read. It's the second in The Thornton Mystery series and I've so enjoyed watching the romances blossom from the first book to the second. It is delightfully clean romance with many mysterious twists.

I love my writing community over on Instagram and am never short of reading material. Fellow multi-author, Barbara Randell recently shared her first children's story Digger the Wonder Dog with me. It is such an endearing story and has a surprising, yet satisfying end to it. We predominantly follow Digger's adventures north of Adelaide where he becomes the hero of several small communities. He quickly crept into my heart and I even wished I could meet him in real life!
February was a busy month for me. I read the third in a series of memoirs by Lynn Walker. A Perfectly Good Fantasy: A Memoir, had a refreshing take on a very serious topic; addiction. Walker managed to pull off a humorous telling of her recovery from serious drug and alcohol addiction which made it an easy, yet informative, read.

By Lynn Walker

Along similar lines of Atomic Habits, but shorter and in easily set-out format, I read a quick-read called Dynamic Alignment by Brad Borkan and Holly Worton. This book is a game-changer in getting to know yourself more deeply and using your strengths, skills and interests towards a more fulfilling and rewarding life. Really worthwhile and a definite re-read for me.
Well, that's it from me. I am determined to carry the wondrous beginnings of 2024 from summer into our Autumn months. Many of you will be heading into Spring with new beginnings aplenty. I'm excited for all of us!
If you've read this far, thank you. I'd like to give you the opportunity to be an early reader for my triathlon short story. If you'd like to be an Early Reader in the middle of March please email me at: elora.canne@gmail.com with the subject heading: Early Reader.
Uncertain of Early Reader expectations? Simply read through the +-7000 word short story and let me know your thoughts. The role of Early Readers is to give the author an idea of story flow, receptivity amongst readers and general readability. That's it. Email me with no strings attached, no monetary exchange, just an author looking for honest feedback.
Bye for now.

MORE IN 2024!

It’s going to be a cracker of a year!
The feedback from Beta readers for Love & Laughter has been well worth the wracking nerves of sending it ‘out there.’
They helped bring greater depth to the complexities of midlife love. This novella promises to shake up the world of midlifers from a mundane routine existence.
>> Critique readers will be requested in early March, so if you’d like to be part of the journey for Love & Laughter just comment below or send me an email headed Critique Reader to: elora.canne@gmail.com
What I read in the holidays:Just two books, which felt so luxurious to slowly languish through. Both were stories that required that leisurely reading pace, not the fast pace of an edge-of-your-seat story.
The books in question? The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak.
Touching on love, both young and midlife, culture, ancestry and nature, this story comprises everything I value. Beautifully narrated dual timelines converge seamlessly like a perfectly choreographed ballet. Just stunning.
The second book in question? The Garden House by Marcia Willett. She and I have the following things in common - Marcia Willett Instagram PostFavourite quote:
Human relationships are never straightforward.
Non-Fiction News:I love getting a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at an author’s life whose work I have read. It adds a scintillating layer of interest to the author. You can read about my conversation with author Danielle Corrie, here: In conversation with author Danielle Corrie
Writerly News for the Year Ahead:I’m delighted, nervous, thrilled and intimidated to have started a writing group at our local library.
I’ve never belonged to a writing group before, let alone headed one. But the opportunity presented itself and if you know anything about me by now, you’ll know that I jumped right in, feet first!
If you’re local to MidCoast NSW and would like to join us, comment below or send an email with the header Writing Group to: elora.canne@gmail.com
That’s it from me. I have some fabulous reads from my cozy online author community that I cannot wait to get stuck into. Stay tuned and stay loved up, full of laughter, and happily ever after 😍

Holidays/Family/Self Balance
However you celebrate and enjoy the festive season, may you strike the perfect balance between fun with family and friends and peace and harmony within.

On that note, I am seeing the year out with my final blog post. In this post I have two polar opposite book reviews, yet both equally important in defining our relationship with ourself and others.
Goodbye Again: A memoir by Candace CahillCandace almost started her life as a young adult on the wrong foot. She made a decision almost entirely alone, that would have resounding aftershocks on her life.
Candace chose to provide her baby with a better life by opting for adoption. She agonized over the decision with minimal help and clung onto every update she received of her baby until the updates stopped completely.
By this stage, Candace had met a partner who supported her better than she could have imagined, since hiding her shame from the world previously. This more mature love, as compared to her previous unstable teenage love, provided the foundations for Candace to heal and grow.

Candace's healing journey was helped along with her writing as well: The writing proved cathartic in that it helped me explore my feelings and triggers to find patterns and ... to share my grief and insight ...
It is my belief that the deeper we know ourselves, the better our relationships with others will be. The other take away from the quote above is Candace's fulfillment in the knowledge that she was helping others; this provides us with a sense of community and belonging, another vital component to fulfillment.
Candace learnt to show herself compassion and one of the biggest tips I gained from reading her memoir is that we can both regret a decision and know it was the right one, at the same time. A mindshift worth its weight in gold.
It's a five star review from me and you can find Candace's details and her memoir information at the following link:

I moved onto a lighter fiction after such a deeply affecting story, and though it was fiction, this story too, had comparisons between teenage love and mature love; just my kind of read.
If Only You Knew by Stefanie CastroThis isn't love. This can't be what love feels like because I thought what we had was forever. Love should feel like you're soaring...
We are swept into Becca's life as the new kid at school, where she is embraced by her new bestie almost immediately. She soon becomes entangled with the debonair Shane who reassures her, and her mother!, that he will be Becca's boyfriend before the end of the year.
He holds true to his 'promise' and their teenage love story is one we all wish for and swoon over...until it isn't.
Shane goes back on his promise of their 'forever' story and breaks Becca's heart beyond repair.

We fast forward through their adult lives until a chance encounter sees them face-to-face. This is where the twists and turns take you on an even steeper rollercoaster ride. The author takes us along their journey's individually in both present day and in flashbacks to their teenager years. The misunderstandings are revealed to us in intricate detail and we are led to the moment when the biggest plot twist is revealed.
I loved the transition from teenage to adult love with the insights and wisdom that come with the experience of a life well lived.
Becca gives us a glimpse of what she hopes for in a relationship by observing her parents: I loved watching my parents interact. They had this bond, this love, that had me looking at the stars at night and pleading for me to feel that one day in my future.
Will Becca find this love for herself? You'll have to find out at the link below.
I'm giving this book a four star review purely because it's hot and spicy and a little more than I expected. However, it is a tale of true love through the ages and an endearing one at that.

Emotive Book Reviews
Welcome to book recommendations that'll both surprise you and touch your heart.
I put a call out towards the end of November for anyone who wanted to highlight relationship connections in their books. I got a few more responses than anticipated and simply could not turn them away. They all blew me away with their raw energy. Which is why I'll be featuring these books in two parts.

TEIDA'S STORY: Life Through the Eyes of a Dog by Danielle CorrieNot only is this an endearing tale of human kindness towards each other, but also a deeply affecting tale of loyalty from a dog's perspective.
Teida is a rescue dog who transforms the life of her new owner, Annie with a quiet knowing of mood and emotional needs. Teida also comforts close friends of Annie's with her gentle spirit of companionship and trust.
Written through Teida's perspective, the author has observed her behaviours and mannerisms closely, with the added nuance of studying Teida's needs in return. What results, is a fascinating life story of Teida as she engages with nature and the greater universe. We follow her as she ages and becomes more frail at which time, the life lessons turn inward towards the author as she grapples with Teida's frailty. Leaning on the lessons Teida has taught her from the loss of other's close to her, the author learns to trust her instincts and gains confidence in her decisions.
If you're an animal lover and enjoy narrative memoir, this book is for you. I would even go so far as to recommended it for tween readers.

Chimnese Davids tells of her anguish through powerful poetry in a way that the reader can visualize and sense what she is going through.
As she takes us into the depths of heartache we glimpse flashes of hope when promises of faith emerge. We are lifted up in unison with the author while she slowly comes out of her despair to find small pleasures in her memories and small windows of brightness looking out into the future.
Filled with a deep understanding of human nature and the impact of relationships on one, Davids explores the hard questions of holding on and letting go, and the merits of both. She is a highly descriptive poet and one capable of taking the reader along with her for the ride.
For those who love immersive poetry and descriptive visualizations, this book is for you. Follow the link for details on where to find Chimnese Davids' work: Instagram: Chimnese Davids

The Yard: How a Horse Healed my Heart by Grace Olsen
It’s extremely rare that I reread any books, but this is one that I will return to time and again. Olsen draws on her personal experience as a first time mom to draw the reader into her world. A world of despair…until a chance encounter with a client turns the conversation to horses.
From there, we witness a wonderful emerging of the author’s sense of humour, personality and courage as she embarks on a mission to fulfill her life’s dream.
She begins to recall the wonder of horse riding from her youth and revisits the possibility as a busy working mom. Olsen develops a heartwarming bond with each of the horses entrusted to her, and she saves the best for last as she reveals her most important lessons from a horse that crept into her heart in a beautiful transformation of rider and horse connection.
Highly recommended whether horse lover or not, find more detail here: Instagram: Grace Olson Author

The Shape of Love
If you've been reading my blog posts for a while, you'll know that I focus on later-in-life love quite a bit. I feel that this kind of relationship is a transition stage that very often gets overlooked, so when I come across books that include seasoned lovers, or midlife lovers, I snap up the opportunity to devour them.

This month, I have 3 relationship-altering stories for you that will make you see love from a fresh perspective of youth through to maturity across a range of environments from castles to ghetto kids to small-town every day kids.
I'll start with the seasoned love in a castle story because it was on my tbr list the longest. I discovered the titles written by Jasmine Guillory when researching 'factual fiction' for my own writing projects. This one is called The Royal Holiday.
Royal Holiday by Jasmine GuilloryVivian is a single midlifer who is coaxed into going on holiday to England with her daughter, while she works on the Christmas wardrobe of the resident Duchess.Vivian almost instantly meets Mr Hot Chocolate, aka Malcolm who is the Queen's private secretary. On a small hiatus from work engagements, he offers to take Vivian on a tour of Sandringham House, the stables, the Victoria and Albert Museum and various posh restaurants for dinner; a veritable courting indeed!
Vivian is reluctant to let her feelings flow because of the short-term arrangement of such a friendship, however, she quickly realizes the deliciousness of having someone to talk to:
Someone to flirt with. Someone to laugh with. Someone - a male someone - who clearly enjoyed her company.
This passage truly struck a chord with me. How often do you get the opportunity to just chat back and forth freely with someone who is attentive to your every word; someone who listens without interruption and without agenda to amend or add their opinion to your own? Someone who simply allows you to be you.
Their relationship quickly becomes multi-layered as they both fall for each other and Malcolm invites Vivian to extend her holiday and, well, I'll leave you to find out the solution they arrive at.
The author expertly displays Vivian's insecurities as a woman out of her comfort zone, as well as Malcolm's uncertainty of entering the dating field once more. She unveils a depth of feeling as they both thrash out their thoughts openly with each other and discover the sweet comfort of being vulnerable in the confines of a trusting cocoon. Until they are thrust into unknown territory when Vivian's extended holiday comes to an end.
I've given this book a four star review, simply because there was just one scene with a tad too much spice for my liking. It was unexpected in this story of light humour and polite courting, so I just wanted to warn any unsuspecting clean romance readers like me.

💘I 'met' Jodi Gibson on the Facebook Group, Global Girls Online Book Club for her author of the day feature. Her stories immediately gripped me with strong female protagonists - she quotes: You have to consider who they are at the start of the book and how the story will change them...you need to know their flaws, emotional wounds, their fears which will all inform the story. I decided to start with her debut novel, The Memories We Hide.The Memories We Hide by Jodi GibsonLaura and Ryan meet as teenagers at school in the midst of exam stress, increasing freedom at social outings and a host or hormonal changes. Laura is riddled with anxiety when Ryan seems to lose interest in their relationship, until she discovers the emotional rollercoaster he was on, himself:
Hindsight and wisdom were no use to her teenage emotions...they were both young and afraid...compounded by emotions they couldn't understand.
As Laura matured and hindsight gave her the clarity she sought, she realised that she had been in love with the 'idea' of Ryan, of perfect young love. She came to appreciate the wisdom of knowing that 'real love' was deep under many layers of meaning. Real love was often overlooked for the shiny gem of young love...
The author's knowledge of psychology plays a big part in The Memories We Hide as she reveals the mental anguish often felt by youngsters who are too afraid to speak out for fear of ridicule. Gibson has systematically worked through the mental resolve of the characters in her book as she outlines solutions relatable to each, through the insight of her protagonist, Laura.
As to whether Laura finds her 'real love' or not, you'll have to find that out for yourself.
It's rare to find a story that follows the love life of a youngster through to adulthood, and while this isn't in what I would call the midlife category, it certainly is in the mature love category. The books value lies in the uncovering of love in its many shapes.
Five stars from me, but be aware that there are mental health issues discussed quite openly in the book.
Check out Jodi Gibson's info at the link: Instagram: Jodi Gibson
💘I want to be VERY CLEAR when I say that this next book is most definitely not a book about love in the sense of romance, but it is a book about misguided love, conditional/unconditional love and covers a lot of sensitive trauma. That said, Kirsty Jagger is an author of high esteem in my opinion as she digs deep to reveal the grit and tenacity of never giving up through it all.
Roseghetto by Kirsty JaggerAre you doing what's best for you? And not just you as you are today. But you in ten, twenty, thirty years from now. Are you on the right path to get you where you want to be?
Shayla's Pop is her mainstay and the author of Roseghetto, Kirsty Jagger, highlights the importance throughout the story, of having someone to talk to, to rely on, and the devastating effects when that void is not filled.
The story is harrowing for sure, but we start with the adult Shayla which has a softening effect on the trauma she went through, simply because we know she came out the other side, not unscathed, but free from the cycle in which she was raised.
We follow young Shayla through childhood as she struggles to understand the adult world around her, but ends up being the one offering sage advice to her mother: Trust you intuition. Our gut instincts are usually right. Advice she receives from a school counselor, and, thankfully, takes to heart.
Whilst this doesn't erase her past, it gives her the tenacity to believe in herself and we see a teenage Shalya start to stand up for herself, to speak out for herself and to wage war on those who have wronged her.
The story reminds us that we have options, that we can start small, start at the bottom of the ladder, but making a start is what it takes to get out of a rut you don't want to be in.
Five stars from me, but I would label this book a sensitive read. The redeeming factor of Roseghetto is the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter, even if it does come from the daughter relentlessly, unconditionally and steadfastly. We do, however, see glimpses of the wrath of a mother who's child has been wronged and is forced into a system against all common sense. In fact, I think that was my favourite scene, when Shayla's mom fought back for her. It felt like a pivot for Shayla too as she witnesses the sound of love in her mother's defense of her.
For more info, click this link: Instagram: Kirsty JaggerLet's lighten the mood with a touch of humour shall we? Some parents run a tight ship. I run a pirate ship. There is some swearing, some drinking, and a touch of mutiny from the tiny crew I created. Not my joke, credit unknown, obtained from Pinterest.
In all seriousness, you are the Captain of your own ship, so sail into your future with the confidence of a skipper who knows where they are going, just like our three protagonists as shown in the stories above.

What Defines You?
It is said that we 'are what we eat,' and it is also said that, 'our thoughts become things.' But have you heard, or felt , the notion that our bodies imbibe what we read, see and hear?

It's certainly true for me, and as announced last month, I will be talking about books that have had a profound effect on me, here on the blog for the foreseeable future.
Books really do embody the 'read, see, hear' criteria of our lives so we need to be mindful of what literature we consume. The three I want to mention today were heavy reads for me and deeply affecting.
Perhaps it makes a difference too, if there is a connection, however indiscernible, between reader and author. Whilst I know none of the following authors personally, I do feel some sort of connection with each.
At an author talk I attended, the interviewee spoke volumes to me about her knowledge of our local area. Unintentionally, I became invested in her stories, soaking up her history of the surrounding towns and country. Her eyes lit up as she described villages and regional settlements, which fired-up my interest. I've since read her latest book, All We Have is Now, and have her first book, The One, on my tbr stack. I, of course, did purchase the book of the author event, Sandie Docker's Red Gum River Retreat, also on my ever-growing tbr stack.
All We Have is Now - Kaneana MayLong forgotten memories that we habour in our minds can eat away at our well-being if left to build up in our thought clouds.
Past hurts make us feel alone, as if others wouldn't understand. But the truth is, once we verbalise our pain, we realise that there are many people just like us with the same hurts, just waiting to be heard, understood and accepted.
All We Have is Now, dealt with many issues of abandonment, loss, forgiveness and second chances. From family relationships, to friends, colleagues and lovers, Kaneana May covered each with sensitive empathy offering ways around our stumbling blocks in a positively impactful way.
Hers was one of those books I had to sit back with, hug to my chest, and think. Deeply think.
It comes highly recommended, but be sure you are in a strong place of mind to read such a compassionate book of humankind and our emotions.

As a fledgling author myself, I was priviledged to present an 'Author For the Day' event on the Facebook group, Global Girls Online Bookclub. It was there that I 'met' author Emma Grey and was introduced to her heart-wrenching story. The best way she described for herself to heal was to write her story in an 'almost-fiction' style. This is Grey's explanation for outlining real life events in the form of characters and fictional events.
Thus was borne, The Last Love Note.
The Last Love Note - Emma GreyTo be transported into the protagonists life is a skill few authors possess. To imbue the protagonists emotions into the reader is a talent beholden by a mere handful of wordsmiths. Emma Grey is just such an author.
We follow the protagonist through love, devastating loss, survivor guilt, mother guilt, renewed love exploration and a reinvention of self. A rollercoaster ride of emotions. And worth every word.
Grey interspersed the heavy load with rib-cracking humour in a book that will have you reaching for tissues both for tears of sorrow and of laughter. Again, be sure you are of sound mind before reaching for this book, but please do reach for it. You will gain so much in the form of empathy, relationship insight and evolution of self.
I don't want to give any spoilers away in any of my book musings, so I've intentionally been vague about the protagonists, storylines and themes.

Our roots bind us to those in our fold without any heed of our desire to be tethered or untethered. They just do.
I belong to a walking group of mostly women, mostly married, mostly Australian. An eclectic bunch. In conversation with a lady of Dutch origin we discussed our latest reads, of course! My Papa was of Dutch origin, I'm from South Africa, our roots were bound, this Dutch lady and I.
Her latest book recommendation was of the South African author, Sally Andrew. The book in question, Recipes for Love and Murder. My immediate reaction was, ugh, murder. But the draw of recipes had me drooling; I love browsing recipes, even occasionally trying some out, lol.
Recipes for Love and Murder - Sally Andrew*sighs deeply*
I did not expect the intense introspection this author portrayed.
Our protagonist was a midlife woman who loves to cook, bake, eat. Her career turned to love advice via a recipe column in the local newspaper. But, the heartache of her past catches up with her and she finds herself drawing from her own experience to help others in similar situations. The uncovering of old wounds surfaces as she grapples to come to terms with what she had to deal with, the strength she had to find. The resolve to put it all behind her and move forwards.
Yes, there is murder involved in the story, as the title suggests, but it is manageable.
Second chance love comes to our protagonist and the resulting self-doubt is eye opening.
The story is filled with feelings of unrequited love, angst-ridden jealousy, and the floundering emotions of new love.
The fact that I was about to embark on a trip 'home' to my roots in South Africa after a seven year absence, drew me to the language and recipes Sally Andrew included in her story telling. It felt like the luxury of home comforts in the palms of my hands and then wrapped around me like a warm blanket soothing my soul.
Well worth the read, showing us how to take a good hard look at ourselves and our perspective on the world, on love, and on those in our fold.

Tuscany or True Love

I mentioned that I’d be discussing relationship books here on the blog, for the foreseeable future. I feel it gives a broader perspective of relationships than just me.
Today’s post isn’t technically a book discussion, although it is called the Book Club and it’s based very loosely on Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, so it counts in my book ;)
In the movie Book Club: The Next Chapter, four female friends find out just how far they will go for both love and friendship.
I’m always interested in different views of midlife relationships and these four friends provide exactly that; later-in-life women at a crossroads in their love life.
Incidentally, in our last blog post I said I’d let you know which term best suits midlife love and the winner was Later-in-Life Love.
Our four female friends and their love conundrums are as follows:Vivian finds herself engaged to long-time lover Arthur, and her friends surprise her with their wedding all set up in Tuscany.
At the moment critique, Arthur displays his true love for Vivian asking her NOT to marry him so she can remain as free as a bird and keep their relationship intact.
This is the ideal love for her.
~~~
Carol is happy in a long-term marriage to Bruce but they have lost the spark due to her overbearing concern over his health.
The friends use their famous term Best Friends. Tough Love, to highlight how much happier Carol could be if she just let Bruce be. He surprises her by pitching up to Vivian and Arthur’s would-be wedding and Carol declares her loosening of the reigns; they reignite their passion immediately.
~~~
Diane is in roommate syndrome with her boyfriend, Mitchell, simply going through the motions of daily life while lugging her late husband, Harry’s, ashes around with her everywhere she goes, even to Tuscany.
When Vivian and Arthur call off the wedding, Mitchell swoops in to take the opportunity to propose to, and marry, Diane.
She is delighted at his thoughtfulness.
~~~
Sharon is a retired judge and single and when her cat dies she reluctantly agrees to the trip to Tuscany.
Lo and behold, she hooks up with the local Police Chief and they end up ‘rocking the boat’ in a canal on an impromptu trip to Venice.
Thrilled at the attention she received, she glows with life and vitality once again.
~~~
None of these are spoilers as I have left so much out for you to discover yourself.
BOTTOM LINE: You can, and should, experience fulfilling later-in-life love!
~~~
If you have relationship book recommendations or a no-strings book review request of your own that you feel would be appropriate for a blog discussion, feel free to comment below.
Keep smiling x
Never Give Up
I said this to a friend the other day who was struggling with tech stuff. She was so grateful for the boost that she persevered for an entire week, but she did it!
So let’s just expand on the notion here, that 'there's always a solution.'
I'm delighted to share my conversation with you, from the Living Big Mindfully podcast where host, Kate Champion, and I discussed many later-in-life relationship topics.
But I'm particularly interested in sharing with you, the notion that there is indeed always a solution.
Not only in everyday life situations, as told above, but also in those deeper, more difficult to navigate situations as you'll discover on the podcast.
A renowned book reviewer honoured me with her excellent review of my memoir, En Route , earlier this month. I'll let this segment of her review do the talking so you can see it for yourself:
A travelling memoir, a new life.
We follow the footsteps of the author and her family as they immigrate to Australia. A lot of travelling also is documented and many memories of adventures they had.
The main theme seemed to be 'Who does that?' as the author navigates around certain situations, as you do.
Oh there were so many quotes I highlighted and it came at a good time that I needed them. I particularly took note of the South African food, …especially 'bobotie' and Elora is adamant it has to have Mrs Balls Chutney in it. [Find the 'bobotie' recipe here: Bobotie Recipe:]
All in all this is a memoir that is like a life tonic, you end up feeling on top of the world. This is definitely a 5 star rating/review and I suggest it would make an excellent choice as a bookclub pick, plenty to talk about.
😍 Now, to change pace a bit with something just for fun, I'd love to hear your take on a poll I created. I only recently discovered the term 'seasoned love'.
For a long time I referred to mature love as ‘midlife love’, but since chatting with Kate Champion on her podcast where she referred to that age group as later-in-life, I decided I rather liked that term instead.
Then, along came 'seasoned love.'
So, tap the link below and let me know which term you prefer for mature love:
Which term best suits ‘mature love?’
(The link is on my Facebook page, so if you’d prefer, just let me know in a comment here on the blog): mature love, midlife love, later-in-life love, or seasoned love.
I'll let you know the winning result next time!
🏃When we are striving to navigate the hurdles on our path, it helps to have a supportive community around us. It doesn't have to be close friends or family, so long as it is a genuine community with similar aspirations to yours.
I found just such a community in the Indie Book Vault.
There is a lot of jostling of proverbial shoulders in the writing industry and when a community disrupts the equilibrium it is always refreshing.
The Indie Book Vault community aims to highlight up-and-coming indie authors and connect them with their ideal reader. I am so hopping happy to have my memoir, En Route, in their book stash at Indie Book Vault. (Tap the ‘Non-Fiction’ genre to find it 😉)
Because, as the esteemed Pauline Reid {introduced above} mentioned in conversation with me, readers help authors, and...
You can't have one without the other!
🫖 I was so fortunate to be an early reader of Sabina Ostrowska’s third book in her New Life in Andalusia series: Olive Leaf Tea: Time to settle
[Review extract] ‘It is an absolute delight with the author's sense of humour and quirky solutions to unexpected obstacles along the way to her and her husband’s dream life.’
Her husband, incidentally, hails from my very tiny hometown in South Africa (I’m not revealing anything secretive, it’s in the book). What’s more, I’m heading right there on the day that Olive Leaf Tea launches! How about that?
If you want to skip the queue, and receive the book on launch day, 1 September 2023, be sure to preorder now. Here’s the link for you:
Olive Leaf Tea by Sabina Ostrowska
Here is the rest of my review:
Olive Leaf Tea: Time to settle, is a refreshing account of re-establishing a new life in a foreign country.
The language barrier provides ample laugh-out-loud moments, along with a focus and determination to make their new life work.
From interesting neighbours and friends, to unexpected weather events, Olive Leaf Tea provides the perfect backdrop for an afternoon of reading entertainment.
Highly recommended.
🍝 Another fabulous read launching on 1 September 2023, is A Recipe from Rome by Laura Botten.
Again, I had the pleasure of reading an early copy, and I urge you to get yours at this preorder link to ensure a speedy delivery: A Recipe from Rome:
I'll let my review show you why you need to read the book:
April Appleby is a delight as she finds herself tangled in a confusion of pasta and promises of romance - from 3 different, yet equally charming, men.
She’s hoping her trip to Rome with her old friend, Simon, will help clear things up but things only get more tangled.
On a quest to find her mom’s secret pasta sauce, April ends up sightseeing on a Vespa, sampling the delights of Italy and discovering hidden culinary talents. But will she end up with the man of her dreams?
A Recipe from Rome is in equal parts endearing and laugh-out-loud funny! A must-read.A Recipe from Rome ticked all the boxes for me; relationships, recipes, travel!
And be prepared to start cooking once finished! I did, and I regret nothing!
You'll find character snippets and stunning travel photography on the author's Instagram here:
👻 I also have the great pleasure of currently reading an ARC of The Cook, the Ghost and her Sister by Ellen Read. It’s a fabulous tale of relationships with past and present friends and family and I’m loving the dual storyline immensely!
Ellen has seamlessly blended past and present as the characters tell their story. With plenty of intrigue and mystery to keep you guessing, there’s also a hint of romance simmering in the background.
[Talking of ancestry, I do love a good synchronicity and this book launches on the day of my late dad’s would-be birthday!]
(Review to follow).
It gives authors a huge jolt of joy to know you’ve enjoyed their work, so please do let any of the above authors (and podcasters), know if you’ve read and loved their books.
Until next time, stay strong, never give up, and remember, there’s always a solution.
I have had the humungous pleasure of bearing witness to the author journey of one Maria C. Palmer, a mighty and powerful influence in the enrichment of her community.
Maria's memoir, On The Rocks, chronicles her father's rise and fall as an esteemed restaurateur. Maria and her father, Joe Costanzo, Jr., piece together the story as they reveal the impact it had on their family life through some scary experiences.
I was humbled by Maria's request for an endorsement of her book and equally appreciative for it to be selected and accepted by her publisher, Koehler Books.
Release date is 8 August 2023, however, you can preorder today so you don't miss this story of grit and determination.
To find out that, not one, but two big-time Aussie authors were coming to my sleepy little village, was a thrilling discovery!
I was fascinated to listen to the success of a ‘pantser’ author who wings the storyline, just like me, a mere fledgling author. This was encouraging.
So, I guess you’d like to know who I’m talking about?
The book launch was for Sandie Docker’s latest release, The Red Gum River Retreat. After requesting more alliteration in the book’s title, the publisher liked Sandie’s suggestion of ‘retreat’, resulting in a re-jigging to include a music retreat in the story.
I find it quite affirming to know that celebrity authors also have manuscript makeovers, just like the rest of us aspiring authors.
I finally have a copy in my page-turning paws!
The second author of the night was Kaneana May, and it was her work in which I discovered the comfort of familiar surroundings. This included the serendipity of a weekend getaway the very next day for me, to the romanticized mountain village in which her first story, The One, takes place.
But the story that really touched me, All We Have is Now, took me on blissful countryside ramblings that I could visualize clearly.
Oh the delight!
Imagine my astonishment when a holiday-maker in my village called out my name!
To be recognised as an author by a near stranger was a defining moment for me; a morale booster. Surreal, unbelievable, career-affirming.
I say ‘near stranger’ because we are fellow-memoirists on Instagram. One of the benefits of social media is the genuine connections we make, which sometimes develop into friendships.
We had a meet-up the following day for a wonderful walk and chat on the beach, getting to know each other a little more.
Feeling motivated by the connections I’ve made on Instagram, I decided to go ahead with a plan to connect with other book-lovers in real-life.
A once-a-month get together for a quick book swap, chat, game or two and a cuppa will satisfy my inner book nerd and board game geek.
Our local club happily agreed to let me host monthly events in their social lounge and my hope is to provide a space for friendships to blossom.
Relationships, connections and new experiences keep the gray-matter-gremlins at bay!
Writing Capers:
I’m feeling really pleased after receiving rewarding Beta feedback for my New-Adult novel, Forest of Sun and Shadows.
This has been hugely motivating, so I’ll be submitting it to traditional publishers for consideration, from 1 September 2023.
Keep a look out for my request for ARC readers in the coming weeks.
The story follows teenager, Rhen, in her quest to escape the dogma of a stifling relationship, while grappling with the complexities of becoming a young mum.
I do hope you’ve been inspired by my recommendations to pick up a book or two, let me know which ones appealed to you!
