Patreon!Alex blinked at the pistol now in Jim’s hands. “Where did you get that from?”
“Special shoes,” grinned Jim, as the din of enthusiastic gunfire rose around them. “The alleyway behind us, and to the left. Probably our best extraction route. You agree?”
Alex didn’t waste time looking at it, but then: neither had Jim. “No. Not enough cover, if they’re here for us. Lots of concrete to the right.”
“Lots of guns, too. I count five assholes, total.”
“Same.” Alex paused. “Gunfights are stupid, but…”
“Yeah, we’re in one anyway. Screw it, they sound like they’re shooting at other people, and not real well. Leapfrog.”
The major didn’t even agree, just nodded and scrambled right. At her “Clear!” Jim did the same, pausing only briefly at their new cover before heading to the next.

…I don’t have a single damned idea just what’s happening here.
That’s supposed to be, what, Sauron crash-landing in Middle Earth in the Second Age? That’s my best guess. And I should be able to make a coherent guess. LotR is supposed to be something I know something about.
My mini-review of THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER.
Short version: …I think some of the critics out there need to accept that the primary sources of these movies are Jack Kirby comics, which were created in the expectation that many of their readers would be stoned, and/or tripping balls.
Slightly longer version: it’s fine. THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER is fine. The movie was practically airbrushed on the side of a van, but it’s fine and there’s no need to be solemn about What It All Means. It means a lot of people doing slow motion jumps to Guns N’ Roses, the director shamelessly narrating his own movie and getting away with it because he’s funny, and screaming goats. So, so many screaming goats. I laughed every time the goats screamed, because I was imagining a film critic getting more and more upset, every time he was forced to listen to the screaming goats. I was disappointed that the last end scene wasn’t just the goats, screaming one last time. Probably Taika Waititi storyboarded just that, only they told him no.
…Anyway. If you’re tired of the MCU, don’t go see this movie. If you aren’t, go ahead. It’s all cool.

RIP, James Caan.
James Caan was 82 years old, but still: too soon, too soon. He was a good actor, and a fun one, too. It was always a pleasure to see him on the screen. My condolences to his family and loved ones.

Calm!
Patreon!Jim took his own look around the bazaar. It didn’t feel dangerous, but ‘bad vibes’ in a place was something you read about in books, not see in real life. The various Birminghamites weren’t being skittish or nervous, except for the slight wariness towards civilian officials you still got in Reclamation Zones. It’d probably take another generation before any of these people could be comfortable looking someone like him in the eye, and that wasn’t just because nutrition under the Invaders had been so bad.
But even if it wasn’t dangerous, things still weren’t normal. And Jim couldn’t quite work out why. “Dammit, I’m rusty at this,” he muttered. “You feeling anything weird, Alex?”
“Yes,” she said. “Where are all the crimefulls?” She used the old collaborationist word for criminals, dissenters, and the simply obnoxious with no more than a momentary twitch of the mouth; good tradecraft, but not something she evidently enjoyed. “There should at least be somebody off in a corner, ranting about the Queen.”
