E-books Here to Stay...Today's Gutenberg

I've seen several articles indicating that E-books are short term thing that won't garner much attention or be a lasting influence in the literary world. This is the gist in one form or another of these types of articles.

Let me tell you that if you see authorship as a get rich quick scheme, let me disabuse you of this. If you are an author/writer, then expect that you will not make a ton of money unless you become very popular. Be an author because it is important to you. Not because you want to be rich or want to be famous. Do it because it is what you want more than anything. It doesn't matter what topic you choose, just makes sure that it is something that you want to do with every ounce of your being. Decide if you want that and you are willing to do the work. Decide if you want to see if it would potentially be something you want to do. Decide if you are willing to continue even if you aren't a huge seller right away and have to really work at it.

First, for newbies, I would suggest not to spend a ton of money in the beginning. Start out with a test of the waters. If you think you have to start with 'big publishers' then do so but be aware that you are likely as not to get rejections. If that discourages you, then maybe it's time to move on. I actually preferred starting with the new media, E-Books and went the self-publishing route. I think that e-books are a great way to test the waters. There are some free methods out there to get published from. E-books are very popular as it reduces the paper used.

From there you can do the work of publicizing. If at some point, you decide you want to do your own EPUB formatting, then find something that works for you. Even if it takes some time you will do it. Books generally aren't going to be advertised for you in E-book format and you can't expect people will do the work for you. You will have to do the work.

Remember as an author, everyone goes through growing pains and decide to try different options. It is normal to explore. Don't let yourself get discouraged by perceived failure. If you are getting books out and improving your knowledge base, you can move ahead and you can always improve your style. People who follow an author get to see them grow and change and that is normal and good.

Being discouraged in the short term is normal, but staying discouraged isn't going to help. It is always a valid choice to make a career change that works better for you, but until you've tried, you'll never know. So, stay Realistically Unrealistic and know what it is that you want out of the experience. Think hard about whether authorship is for you. Guaranteed that you'll find things not working out as fast or as well as you want...especially if you go in with stars in your eyes expecting to be a huge selling high paid writer. If you go in just wanting to be a writer and insist on working hard at it and enjoy it, you will be a success no matter what.
As the old quote goes: No man is a failure who is enjoying life. - William Feather.

You also need to consider that if you have no budget, it is harder and incredibly more challenging. Don't let anyone tell you it is impossible. Yes, it is difficult, but if you want to try as a first time author then there are low to no budget ways to see if it is a fit for you.

A Few Thoughts on Publishing your E-book

There are no spoilers in this post. It's all new and not included in the book. So a free tip included in the post.

This week, my latest book got released on Amazon How to Publish an E-book on a Budget of $0: Making your Dreams a Reality. Still working on other formats.

Authorship is a work in progress. In my latest book, I have given some ideas for ways to help yourself and help others as well as how to publish a book. It’s a Canadian Perspective. We are a helpful people.

Something I can tell you from experience is that if you choose to publish with a multi-format publishing company, there is bound to be some issues with your manuscript. Don’t let that dishearten you. It is something you have to factor in. One of the reasons I don’t do a lot with regard to my book until they are on all platforms. It can take literally days of working with the manuscript and helpdesk. If you’re easily frustrated, you may give up after getting one book on. I’m not trying to discourage anyone. It’s just a fact. The more platforms it is put on from one company, the more things have to be done in a certain way and more issues that your book may find. There will be problems. That is not to say that it is not the way to go. It will give you wider distribution than if you try to do it all yourself.

The one thing I caution authors is to have patience with the staff of these platforms. They are doing the best they can while things are being updated, changed and platform changes happen. I’ve been learning over time. If you have an issue, state clearly which of your books, what the issue is and the screen shots if you can give them. The more they have to work with, the better job they can do. They will ask you politely if you don’t provide the correct information. Remember it is a learning curve. The new author can do a lot to help themselves and one of those things is to provide good information to the team that is working in the company. I’m guilty of not providing the information they need. I’m learning.

So, as I like to say, be Realistically Unrealistic. I don’t know how many books the staff has to look into. Everyone tends to forget that there are a lot more books up than your own. So, this is one tip that can get your work dealt with more efficiently. It can cut back on one extra email and frustration for both author and company if you remember to give the information above. Just one extra trip from one writer to the newbies out there. Sorry, Draft2Digital, I’m working on being better about sending you the required information.

If you found this tip to be helpful, you might enjoy my new book which documents a lot of the information you need to Publish your own e-book.

Family

It does happen that two family members get involved in the same occupation. In our case, myself and a cousin are both authors. I’m her biggest fan. It is even better when we two can support each other in our goals.

In this case, we are two cousins on opposite sides of the pond. She (Alice Starzl) is in London, England and I (E Jean Simpson) am in Prince Edward Island, Canada. We both love literature and writing. We both have a variety of things we like to do. Alice is multi-talented and is a wonderful musician as well as author. In the event someone thinks that it is just family bragging, please find an example of her work at the following site. She has her own Youtube channel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pEpe... She has a variety of other hobbies that she excels at.

It’s with great pleasure that I announce that we both have books on the TCK publishing 2020 Reader’s Choice Awards. https://www.tckpublishing.com/2020-re...

Alice Starzl has her book listed under Favorite Children’s books (tab 11) called Nannie Annie which is a wonderful story.

E Jean Simpson/Andrew Simpson is under General Nonfiction (Tab 5) called Rocky Mountain Memories

We share our books with each other. We share our good days and bad days.
Even though we are miles apart, we are not only cousins, but good friends.

I hope that you will consider voting if you have the time.

Alice Starzl is available on FB at https://www.facebook.com/LiverTranspl... and via Smashwords at https://www.smashwords.com/profile/vi... where her book is free until the end of July!

E Jean Simpson/A & J PEI Treasures is available on FB though https://www.facebook.com/AandJPEITrea... and on Draft2Digital https://books2read.com/ap/nBkAM9/E-Je... and Amazon https://amazon.com/author/ejeansimpso...

Thank you for reading the post. Also thanks for your interest in A & J PEI Treasures!

Moving Forward

I have been working on advertising. On $0, that isn't always easy. You apply to things and a lot of it won't turn out. But, when it does, it can be quite exciting. I found out this morning that I am a Canada Book Award winner https://canadabookaward.com/ This is an honour as it both celebrates my Canadian heritage and my status as a Canadian Author. I wasn't sure I'd make their cut, but now that I actually see it on the site, I know it's not some kind of weird joke. I went from the email link, but then went to the website cold just to make sure. I couldn't believe my eyes the first time, but when it stayed on and went to the actual place, I saw that it was real. It's a mix of Canadian Prince Edward Island Pride and a mix of not being able to believe my good fortune that 3 of my books made their cut.

So, never let anyone tell you that being poor in money will keep you from qualifying for anything with your books. If you work hard at it, you can make things happen. Don't let the naysayers stop you from trying to be all that you can be.

As long as you are Realistically Unrealistic, you keep working at it and trying to move ahead. Eventually, if you are determined, you can make some part of your goals and dreams a reality.

If you haven't voted yet, the TCK awards are still open to votes. Our E-book Rocky Mountain Memories is one of the General Nonfiction contestants!

Books

It's always interesting to see how much information there is out there telling you what to do to be successful as a writer. The interesting thing about it is that the writing itself doesn't seem to get a lot of attention. It's more about getting your book out there, getting it marketed, spending money on covers, books, getting reviews. Don't get me wrong, they're all great things to work on. But does it end up taking away from the actual writing? Something that I sometimes wonder about. Doing it on $0 budget is a challenge (teaser).

Sometimes with all this, one seems to wonder if they are a writer or an advertiser or marketer. At one time, writing books was a matter of getting a publisher and it was all done with maybe a little exposure through the newspaper. Of course there were physical books and harder to get published.

Now with self-publishing finding a foothold, there are so many things to think about. The least of which is the writing. I wonder how many people find themselves lost in the details of trying to find a way to get their book noticed. There is just such a bewildering array of formats, books and genres out there. Each one battling for prominence and attention.

I see some irony in the whole thing. Though books are more available, it's harder to get interest in your particular book. Though it is easier to buy e-books, there are just so many out there.

So, one thing to bring away from this is it takes a lot of determination. Make sure, when/if you get a chance for publicity for your book(s), that you consider what it is you want people to know. For example, I make sure to keep my regional location to our beautiful Island Province. As a Canadian author, keeping my roots visible is important to me. If you just state some location without claiming any citizenship, you risk losing the interest of local people. If you are too non-specific, you can miss out on the local area. However, this totally depends on what is important to you. For me, my PEI home is a source of interest and imagination. I associate it with the wonderful Lucy Maude Montgomery who brought the Island alive for many. So, I am honoured to be able to claim my Prince Edward Island kinship. Others may have different ideas. It might suit the purpose of the author to be non-specific so that they can be a kind of enigma.

As always, I'm realistically unrealistic. I find inspiration in our daily life, on the Island and it's flora and fauna. If you allow yourself to follow your dreams and your inspiration, you never know where it will lead.

Thanks for reading my blog and for your interest in A & J PEI Treasures

Unrealistically Realistic

Today I just found that our book Rocky Mountain Memories has been added to the TCK Awards nominees for General Nonfiction! It's an honour to be added to the list. We could use votes if you feel so disposed.

https://www.tckpublishing.com/2020-re...

the voting page is above. Our nominee is below

https://books2read.com/Rocky-Mountain...
Amazon book below.
Also available in Canada.
https://read.amazon.ca/kp/embed?asin=...

Being a new author, even being a nominee is a great honour. Over time, I hope to improve my books and my style.

To be an author, it is important to take each little step and be grateful for the chance to be motivated to be better, and still better yet. Each accomplishment is a step forward and if you don't search for the steps, you will never find them. So, be Unrealistically realistic and find your niche and your way forward.

Things are moving along

When I first started with the e-books, things seemed to move very slowly.

Today, I got home and finally got a chance to check The BUZZ arts and entertainment magazine on Prince Edward Island. I'm grateful to them for having put our latest book up.

https://buzzpei.com/from-the-lens-of-...

It's exciting to see my book up there on an Island magazine.

For every new author, it is something that is not easy to get through the process of marketing yourself. It takes a lot of work. When it actually works out, it's very exciting.

I think it is always good to be grateful for the help. Remember to thank the people who are sharing your posts, sharing your book, they are the people who make what you do possible.

It is also important to know your limits and what you can't do. Our A & J PEI Treasures forum is for our works, therefore I'm not really going to be of use to other authors for guest blogging. I don't use it for that purpose. It isn't because there is anything against them, but it's just not the type of blog I have.

If anyone is into Gardening, my husband (the other half of A & J PEI Treasures human team) has made a video of planting strawberries from runners. It's eco friendly and some parts are reusable. Tends to take some of the shock from the plant being transplanted. https://youtu.be/X1KntJJ32UE

So, there is a benefit for being unrealistically realistic. After all the information sending, I have gotten my book advertised on a reputable Arts and Entertainment Magazine on PEI! I hope to have more news soon.

Thanks for reading the blog!

Summer learning e-book publishing and life

The last few days have been unseasonably warm for early summer. I'd complain, but it was cooler in the spring and so we adjust to the weather. Sam the Wonder Dog is letting us know that it is warm and he doesn't want a full walk in the day...he just finds a patch of shade on the walk, flops down and refuses to move until we ask if he wants to go home. Dogs are smart. The cat sleeps through it. The cat might be smarter.

Generally, I've been learning a lot about publishing from the other end of it. The marketing end. As with any new field opening up more and more, there are things that have changed and it is a fast ever changing virtual landscape. At one time, people could advertise on Kijiji, but I have learned that this is no longer the case. I found out while researching something. It is actually no longer allowed. There is too much scamming is the reason given. Literally e-books are not allowed to be placed on Kijiji.

So, new authors must be determined and root out every valid possibility to market their books. It is no longer a case of writing a book gives you an in to getting sales. Now you have to be a one person show. You have to write, edit, find places to put your book up. Then you have to market and find ways to get your book sold.

As with any new thing out, even during the time of Gutenberg, his faster printing machine put a lot of monks out of business over time. Then there were developments and changes which resulted in the widely available printed book. Now we are seeing a surge in electronic books. This is hard on book sellers (physical book sellers). The market is once again divided. There are still adherents to the physical book, much like, I would assume, in the time of Gutenberg, there were still adherents to the beautiful script and art work of the monks. So, you see, with each change come improvements to a particular method of working, but also there comes a cost.

It was never realistic to decide to move to Prince Edward Island and then to decide to write books. If I let things discourage me...along the way, there would be plenty of things to discourage people...then I would never have written anything. So, when you feel discouraged in your daily life or in writing or any other art work, always know that you are growing and learning. Each time you grow and learn, something may be lost, but then there is a lot that can be gained.

As always, be realistically unrealistic. You'll never know what you can accomplish if you don't know what you can't do and reach for the sky. The sky is the limit. You can move forward and ahead. Even with bumps on the path, you are your own person and you can move ahead. If you learn something, then you have not failed. If you keep working at it, you might just surprise yourself at how far you can go.

Thanks for reading my blog and for your interest in A & J PEI Treasures!
