EP. 101: How to Un-Hurry Your Heart With Jennifer Dukes Lee
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Let me ask you a question. If you were offered a choice to either speed up life or slow it down, what would you choose? Oh, and the real kicker here — along with this choice came the assurance that if you slowed down you wouldn’t miss a thing. You wouldn’t be left behind. You wouldn’t lose your edge. What would you choose? Interesting when you actually stop to think about it, right?! I’m willing to bet that many of us would gladly opt for a break from the fast pace of life. The ‘hustling hard’. The ‘going big’. (I know I would!) So…why is that? Because candidly, the never ending striving is exhausting! And! The constant spinning often leaves us feeling…. Stressed. Empty. Out of sorts. Can you relate?? Friend, if I am describing you here, then let this be your cue! The time has come to step into a far more satisfying, sustainable pace. A pace that leads to a life of contentment, happiness, and a new found freedom! If this sounds like something you would love to take advantage of, then boy do I have the guest for you today! You see, today I am joined by beloved author, Jennifer Dukes Lee. You know I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sit down with Jennifer when I found out that her latest book is all about growing slow. About charting a path away from the pressures of bigger, harder, faster, and into a more rooted way of living where the growth of good things is deep and lasting! (Clearly a girl after my own heart right here!) It sounds great, right? But how?? HOW do we go about finding this un-hurried life?
How do we not give into this tension of our body, heart, and soul telling us to slow down… at the same time crashing into this fear of feeling like we’re falling behind.Feeling like we have to keep up. Maybe even feeling like we should be further along by now. Well, first thing first. This decision to grow slow is not one and done. In fact, it’s a decision you have to make over and over again in your life. Once we recognize and embrace that truth, we can be mentally prepared to tackle those moments of anxiety, insomnia, and fear. And so, in those moments, when that tension is high we can make a conscious choice to return to growing slowly by following Jennifer’s “Growing Slow Method”: Remember. Reflect. Return. Step #1 is Remember – Just by its nature, remembering requires you to stop, slow down, and pause. So, the next time you feel that tension sneaking up on you try this…. Stop and remember a piece of wisdom that you have encountered at some point in your life. Whether that be something you’ve learned personally or something that has been passed down or given to you. Ready to get real here? Let me share Jennifer’s example to really bring this home. Like so many of us, Jennifer wrestled with the not-so-welcomed quarantine weight and made a decision that she wanted to lose her newfound lbs. So, to help her with this goal, she hired her strength-trainer, Nate, and couldn’t wait for Nate to work his magic. Except! Jennifer wasn’t seeing the progress she wanted in the short time that she had committed to Nate’s program. On the verge of just throwing in the towel and cancelling her training session, she paused. And! Rather than cancel, she remembered what Nate said to her when she first started: Slow progress is still progress. Slow progress is better. You see, Nate’s plan was a sustainable one. One that would actually lead Jennifer to meet her goal without fear of injury or only short-lived success. But! It took Jennifer slowing down to remember this wisdom rather than give into her impulse. The real magic of the Growing Slow Method takes place in the final two steps: Reflect & Return. Jennifer and I go into detail about these steps and so much more in today’s episode where we also chat about: The power of finding balance in life rather than succumbing to the ‘hustle culture’What it looks like to break free from what society says mattersThe importance of God’s timing and God’s provision for your life. Friend, after listening, you will: Find the true relief that comes when you stop running and start resting in JesusBe equipped with practices for unhurried your heart and mind every dayFeel ready to let go of the pressure and embrace the small, good things already bearing fruit in your life If you are tired of going through life always looking for the next milestone, but missing something that already exists…..If you are ready to find a more rooted way of living where the growth of good things is deep and lasting….. then trust me, you will not want to miss today’s incredible episode! I can’t wait to hear what you think!

EP. 100: How to Live a Life of Surrender With Holly Hayes
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Control. Stand up if you felt in control over this past year. (If we were all here together, I’m pretty sure I’d be looking at a sea of seated people — myself included!) So let me ask you this. In absence of feeling in control, where did you turn to make yourself feel better? Food?Alcohol?Retail therapy?Yoga? For me personally, I threw myself into work. If I couldn’t control what was going on around me, I could at least find ‘comfort’ whiteknuckling every achievement, every deadline, every new project, right? Wrong! All of these things provided temporary distractions. A mirage of being in control. BUT, what if we all decided to stop tightening our grip, trying to control the uncontrollable, and instead open our hands to how things are meant to play out? What if we actually SURRENDERED?! Going from white knuckling to open hands isn’t easy. But author + fashion CEO – Holly Hayes – has gone through this transformation. And so can you. Holly knows firsthand what seeking control in all of the wrong places can lead to. You see, Holly was rescued from a life of addiction, abuse, and trafficking when she hit rock bottom and finally witnessed the power of surrender. The power of letting go. She finally cried out to God for help. She did – in fact, she even did so from a bathroom floor. You might be thinking…But Mary, you don’t know what I’ve done. How could a good God even think of rescuing a person like me? Jesus came for the sinners, for the broken. Friends, as much as we put on an act for others and ourselves, the good news today is that: There is no act with God We don’t have to ‘act good’. Instead, we need to receive forgiveness by admitting our sins, insead of hiding behind them. We need to get out of our own way.
So what are you hiding behind today?
What do you need to bring to light? What do you need to stop running from?Really take a moment to stop and think about that. We ALL have our struggles – you are NOT alone in that. I just know that Holly’s path to recovery and faith will inspire you to consider your own. It is such a powerful conversation where we also cover: Holly’s story of her down spiral that led to a life of trauma, shame, and eventual homelessnessThe point in Holly’s journey where she hit rock bottom and what she did about itWhat it truly looks like to surrender your life to the plan that God has for you -this bigger pictureThe power of sharing your own story to help others while bringing glory to GodThe immense impact of the Sanctuary Project and how you can help SO… are you ready to stop running, stop escaping, stop controlling and start living a truly meaningful life of surrender? Me too! I can’t wait for you to tune into today’s empowering episode!

EP. 099: 5 Principles To Win At Work & Succeed At Life W/ Megan Hyatt Miller
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER LEAVE A REVIEW Okay, friends! I want to check-in with you today! How are all of my high-achievers doing?! Are you feeling like you’re killin’ it? That the world is yours for the taking? That everything is working out exactly like you planned? (Sounds so nice, doesn’t it?!) While I sure hope this is the case, chances are you may be feeling a lot more like me lately… Struggling to find work/life balance. Thinking it’s impossible to both win at work AND succeed at life. That the ONLY way your career wins can come is at the expense of your health, relationships, or personal well-being. If this is you, know this – I. Am. Right. There. With. You. In fact, some days I feel as if I’m adding MORE to do my to-do list than I am actually checking-off. That I am barely present as a wife and partner to Justin. That I am drowning under the weight of all on my plate, rather than making time for what really matters. If you are ready to be encouraged, keep reading! There IS a solution! I have to admit that while I do enjoy the ambitious parts of me, I do wish that there was a better way to get all that I want out of life at both work AND home. Today’s podcast guest – Megan Hyatt Miller- shares her secrets about what she calls the ‘double win’- winning at work and achieving at life! Seem impossible? Don’t count it out! Megan actually walks us through the 5 proven and tangible principles of the ‘double win’ – a perspective that sees work and life in partnership, NOT opposition. (Praise hands!) And, let me just tell you… Megan is a wife, mom of 5, podcast host, AND CEO. So if she has found a way to achieve this double win, then it’s time we listen up friends! Close your eyes for a minute. I want you to think about everything that you have to get done this week. Or maybe, even get done today alone. Overwhelmed? Don’t be! Close your eyes again. And this time, when you think about your week, ask yourself Megan’s key question: Where can I invest my time to get a disproportionate result?
Ah- now things are starting to come into focus a little more. Priorities are starting to take shape. And, strategies are beginning to form.
Friends, when we are talking about winning at work + life, we are NOT talking about some perfectionistic ideal…we are talking about vision + intention. So, how do we achieve this? Well this is Megan’s forte and she spills it all in our conversation today as we chat about: Five principles to free yourself from the cult of overworkHow to prioritize what matters most within the three non-negotiable categories of self-care, relational priorities, and professional resultsWays that we can reach our professional potential vs. compromising it without sacrificing the things that matter mostThe differences between the hustle fallacy, the ambition break, and the double win If you are ready to refuse the false choice of career vs. family and achieve the double win in life, then you will not want to miss today’s incredible episode! I can’t wait to hear what you think and how Megan’s strategies change your life! EP. 098: How to Embrace What Matters Most with Kendra Adachi
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Give 100% to your dreams! You can do it! Give it all you got! What is also implied: (But don’t forget to also give 100% to your husband, your children, your community, your book club, your presentable at all times-home, your friendships…And! If you feel like a hot mess, it’s okay because you are being ‘real’!) Hmm… Do these underlying messages sound all too familiar? Does this really sound like the best way to live?? Yeah, I didn’t think so either. Here’s the deal….. We have all fallen victim to the ‘you can do it all’, but ‘you are doing it all wrong’ mindset. Myself included! In fact, if you just look around at all of the magazine titles in the checkout line at the grocery store you will see that our culture is inundated with should dos, must trys, start nows! I’m curious! Have you found yourself in a constant hamster wheel of trying to systemize, life hack, and inspirational quote your way to a simpler and more satisfying life?? If you answered ‘yes’, is it working?? OR – are you like me… finding yourself still overwhelmed and flat out exhausted?! Friends! If you are in the latter group, you are not alone! And, there is a solution!! Today, I had the privilege of chatting with Kendra Adachi – The Lazy Genius herself! And I’ve got to tell you – it was SUCH a refreshing conversation!
You see, The Lazy Genius Way is NOT about doing things the ‘right’ way, it is about finally finding your own way!
There are no shaming mantras about what you should be doing better, no demoralizing comparison traps, or new to-do lists!Instead you will be encouraged to decide what matters to you, while receiving the much needed permission to gently leave the rest behind. (Umm.. yes please!) In fact, Kendra believes that living by a list of “shoulds” is exhausting and leaves zero extra time for just being a person! I have to agree! Over the years, she learned that if her worth was based on how well she did everything she should do, then she would be a terrible human being! So, what did she do? She quit trying so hard! And, she started being a genius about the things that matter and lazy about the things that don’t. Ready to jump on board and be a Lazy Genius with us?! (Your future self will thank you!) Go grab a pen and paper and let’s get started! Here is the first step that you can take TODAY! Group your life into categories and figure out what matters most to YOU within those categories (not what society or social media tells you should matter to you) Here are a couple of categories to help you get the ball rolling: your family, faith, home, work, creative outlet/ hobby. Now, let’s take Kendra’s example of ‘home’ to hammer this out. Things that could matter to you within home include: cleanliness, tidiness, warmth, having individual spaces, having group spaces, etc. Write down all of the things that could matter to you and then, just by process of elimination, go through and decide what actually matters most to you. For instance, if you have a family of introverts, you might find that you care most about having individual spaces throughout your home rather than an HGTV-style open concept space! Why? Because individual spaces serve YOUR family better! This is what the whole idea of being a Lazy Genius is about! Investing your time in the things that matter to you! So rather than spin your wheels trying to mimic the latest open concept floor plan only to be left feeling exhausted and unsatisfied, spend your time doing what will serve you best! I can guarantee you are going to feel SO freed up after listening to our conversation today, where we also talk about: How we don’t need a new list of things to do, but rather we need a new way to seeThe reasons why we are worn out from both trying too hard and not trying at allHow social media has conflated order with being fake and chaos with being realKendra’s ‘decide once’ strategy to breath a little easier and live a little lighter‘The magic question’ that can be truly life-giving Friends, if you are ready to embrace what matters, ditch what doesn’t (guilt-free!), and get stuff done, then you will not want to miss this powerful episode!

EP. 097: How to Get Unstuck When Doubt Takes Over With Steven Pressfield
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW What do you aspire to be? A writer? podcaster? photographer? entrepreneur? For me, my aspirations were not linear or traditional by any means. After getting accepted into Yale Law School, the next logical step would have been to put that degree to use at a law firm. So you can only imagine the looks I received from friends and family, when after graduation I decided to become a photographer instead…. Followed by becoming a podcast host… Followed by becoming an author… I wish making those steps, those transitions were as easy in practice as these statements make them sound. But they weren’t. I was met with resistance every step of the way. And, I’m not just talking about resistance from others – I’m mainly talking about my own internal resistance. So what about you? What does your journey look like? Where have you gotten stuck, paralyzed, or trapped along the way? No matter what your goals or aspirations, my guest today, best-selling author Steven Pressfield- has some good news for you! It doesn’t matter what you are trying to achieve, you WILL be met with resistance. I’m talking about the self-sabotage, procrastination, fear, arrogance, and self-doubt that is INSIDE you. I’m sure you’ve heard the expression, ‘you are your own biggest critic’. Well, that’s because chances are, you are! So, how do you move past that? How do you get out of your own way? I’ll let you in on Steven’s secret… the first step to achieving your dreams? Learn to recognize, confront, and overcome that voice in your head.
That voice in your head is your own resistance. That is the biggest obstacle standing in your way! YOU are your own biggest obstacle, friend.BUT! Armed with the right knowledge and resolution, Steven says that you can acquire the self-motivation, self-discipline, and self-belief necessary to become a focused, mentally-tough working pro! If that sounds like a good plan to you, then you are going to be blown away by the rest of our conversation where we also talk about: Steven’s book “The War of Art” in the context of his brand new book, “A Man at Arms”How both of these books represent the inner and outer battles we face when we try to create something that matters and send it out in the worldWays to combat that unwanted resistance and the resources available that will help you succeed in what you set out to doHow fictional and nonfictional characters alike transition from one level to a much higher version of themselves If you are ready to stop thinking about what it is you want to become, and actually become that version of you, you will not want to miss today’s amazing episode with one of my all-time favorite authors! EP. 096: The Secret Way Expectations Can Shape Happier Habits With Gretchen Rubin
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW What if I told you that you could make better decisions, meet deadlines, keep promises to yourself, suffer less stress, and engage more deeply with others all by answering one simple question. Would you be in? I thought so! Work with me here for a minute…. Raise your hand if you made a New Year’s Resolution at the beginning of 2021. Now, keep your hand raised if halfway through this year you have stuck with that resolution. (I really wish I could see your hands.) So, tell me. If you didn’t make a resolution, or if you didn’t stick to it– how come? Which of these statements possibly applies to you personally. Here we go! “I’ll keep a resolution if it’s useful, but I won’t start on New Year’s Day, because January 1 is an arbitrary date.”“I don’t make New Year’s resolutions anymore because I never manage to keep them—I never make time for myself.”“I never make resolutions because I don’t like to bind myself.”So why is it that we all respond SO differently to the exact same question?!Well, today’s guest – fellow Yale Law alum + best selling author- Gretchen Rubin has an answer for this. It all goes back to one, simple yet decisive question: How do you respond to expectations? Interestingly, all of us face two kinds of expectations: Outer Expectations—expectations others place on us, like meeting a work deadline Inner Expectations—expectations we place on ourselves, like keeping a New Year’s resolution You might be thinking, ‘Okay. Yes, this is interesting. But, why does it matter?’ Ready for the most crucial insight? Depending on YOUR personal response to outer and inner expectations, you fall into one of four distinct types: Upholders– Respond readily to both outer expectations and inner expectationsQuestioners– Question all expectations and meet an expectation only if they believe it’s justified (so really they respond only to inner expectations)Obligers– Respond readily to outer expectations but struggle to meet inner expectations Rebels– Resist all expectations, outer and inner alike
Friends, this is huge!
Knowing your Tendency can help you set up situations in a way that makes it more likely that you’ll achieve your goals!Just as important, knowing other people’s Tendencies can help you to work with them more effectively! In just about any role we play—as manager, health-care professional, team member, teacher, coach, spouse, parent, or colleague, to name a few—it’s helpful to know yours and others Tendencies. Why? Because, it’s hard to grasp just how differently we can all see the world. When we can see other people’s perspectives, we understand why, from their point of view…their actions make sense. So, if you have ever felt stuck or wondered why you (or someone around you) are the way you are, then you will love the rest of today’s conversation where we also cover: How and why our tendencies shape every aspect of our behaviorsWays to make better decisions based on what works best for your specific personality profile—not what anyone else expects or demands; How to have more constructive relationships with the people in our livesThe powerful tool to help us better recognize our own nature, while harnessing its strengths and counteracting its weaknesses. APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Let me ask you a question. When you think about your life… Do you think about where you are headed, or where you have already traveled?Do you think about how far you have to go, or how far you have come?Do you think about the goals still left to achieve, or the goals you’ve already crushed? I have a sneaking suspicion that if you are anything like me, you are more focused on the ‘have yet to dos’ vs. celebrating ALL that you’ve already done! In all honesty, with that mindset and focus, it’s no wonder that many of us are left: wondering if we are even seenfeeling like we are less thanconstantly finding ourselves in the comparison trap Hmm… sound familiar? Trust me, I’m just as guilty as anyone! Even right now! As I’m approaching a deadline for my second book I am constantly having to remind myself that it is NOT just about the finish line, it is about the journey. It’s not just about meeting deadlines, it’s about the roads traveled to even get to this point! So what about YOU, friend? When was the last time that you really dug into the beauty of your own story? When was the last time you’ve honored how far you have come?! When was the last time you reflected on your own journey? If it’s been a while… then get ready to breathe a deep sigh of relief and peace. Morgan Harper Nichols, best-selling artist + author, has mastered this idea of honoring how far we’ve come. Of looking forward to where we’re headed, without getting in a rush of arriving. Her secret? Focus on journeying wide. That’s right! We need to STOP being SO laser-focused. Our downfall is that many of us have an arrival time and route in our minds, BUT we are missing so much along the way when we do! In fact, there is more than one path to get where you are going! (I hope that you are breathing sigh of relief with me right now!) That means even if you have to start over and try again, even if you think you’ve missed your opportunity, EVEN IF…. you CAN and WILL still get to where you are going.
