EP. 094: What the Bible Says about Dating, Relationships, and Sex With Kat Harris

kat-harris-pinterest-graphic APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW First comes love. Then comes marriage. Then comes the baby in a baby carriage… The real message behind this? Save sex for marriage.  If you are like me, maybe you grew up being told that the Bible says you can’t have sex until your are married – but there wasn’t really any more said around the topic. Things like: the heart behind saving sex for marriage, the difficulties that can come with that, and what’s the line between ‘okay’ and ‘SO not okay.’ I mean, if we think about it, have we really ever done a deep dive into the Scriptures to read and understand for ourselves? Especially if you are in a season of singleness before marriage! I know it can definitely be a taboo topic – an uncomfortable one even, but I believe there is much too much importance on this topic to not be discussed in a safe space! And if anyone is willing to talk about this candidly, it’s Kat Harris. Today, I had the privilege of chatting for a second time with the blogger + author – and she has asked all of these questions and more on her personal journey of writing her latest book, Sexless in the City! Growing up at the height of the purity movement, Kat knew this much: “good” Christians don’t have sex until marriage.  But approaching 30 and thrust into the New York City dating scene, she found a set of rules was not a compelling enough reason to keep her clothes on! (Hello!) She found herself caught between purity culture’s rules and popular culture’s do what feels good. (Can you relate?!)  And so, she did something about it! Enter a multi-year journey of Kat searching for answers to the biggest questions about sexuality and faith: What does the Bible really say about sex?Why does almost everyone deal with some sort of sexual shame? But really–what’s a single girl to do with her sexual desire? What if we never get married . . . then what?It turns out Kat was asking questions that countless of us were dying to ask but didn’t know we had the permission to do so!Let’s face it: being single in today’s culture as a woman of faith can be a STRUGGLE FEST. But it doesn’t have to be! Why? Let’s think about intimacy for a second!Kat tells that when we want to experience intimacy we should do a couple of things: Pause and get curious about what it is that you are really wanting right now (is it sex that you are really wanting or human connection?)Acknowledge the desire and normalize itWalk out in integrity, staying in connection with who you are, and who you want to become

You see, desire and pleasure is a part of God’s plan -it’s a part of this life being enjoyable.

kat-harris-pinterest-graphic So how can you connect with desire and intimacy outside of the bedroom?Come together in a creative way to make something new (think artists writing a new song together)Dive into substantial dialogue with someone and really get to know them on a deeper levelPractice sensuality- being connected to your senses while practicing the art of being presentKat believes that God desires to restore a generation disillusioned with purity culture and Christian dating. Discouraged about their singleness… ashamed of their sexual desire… and, uncertain how to practically walk this season out well. If this is you, you are going to love our conversation where we also chat about:What the Bible actually says about sexKat’s vulnernable story of her breaking point and her personal journey and expereriences with sex and datingA renewed biblical vision for sex, singleness, and relationshipsWhat it means to be a woman of faith equipped to navigate today’s dating culture with vision, clarity, and freedom If you are ready to join Kat on her messy, sometimes painful, and always honest journey to discovering God’s heart for sexuality, desire, singleness, and your purpose within it all, then you will NOT want to miss today’s episode! Prefer to watch the episode instead? EP. 093: What 34 Years Of Marriage Has Taught Us With Jamie & Aaron Ivey

APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW “To have and to hold from this day forward, for better or worse….” I’m curious!  Were you the person who always fantasized about meeting your prince charming? Dreamed of your wedding day since you were a little girl?! Maybe had every detail planned out down to the dress, flowers, and venue long before you ever even met your spouse. Or perhaps you were the complete opposite! Not really knowing if you ever really wanted to settle down and get married.  Either way, it’s quite possible that the relationships you have witnessed around you have impacted your view of relationships and marriage.  Married or not, many of us bring our ‘baggage’ into our relationships based solely on what we witness and our own previous experiences… not the person with whom we are with.  If you are married, let me ask you…Do you feel like your marriage is stuck in a rut?Do you feel like you and your spouse are never on the same page?Do you want a flourishing and vibrant marriage, but are unsure how the heck to get there?!If you answered ‘yes’ to at least one of the questions above, then you, my friend, are going to love our conversation today! I am so THRILLED for today’s guests Jamie and Aaron Ivey, to talk about their new book Complement which is ALL about the ways we can complement, not complete each other in our relationships, specifically in marriage.  Life is hard. Jobs change,  loss of income happens, health can be a rollercoaster, children need all of your attention. You are SO busy reacting to everything around you, that you are left burned out, with no time for your spouse. SO. What are you supposed to do to achieve that vibrant healthy marriage that you were expecting when you said ‘I do’? One of the biggest things to remember is that: you and your spouse have a common enemy.Satan wants to destroy and divide. That’s right friends. Even in the middle of the biggest fight, your spouse is not the actual enemy. It’s Satan.  So, when you feel like you are being pulled in different directions. When you feel like you are on separate teams. When you feel like you aren’t doing life together in partnership anymore: Develop a shared mission for your marriage. This mission will be your KEY to marching forward together even when you feel like you are being pulled apart.  The Iveys shared theirs: We are called to love Jesus and called to help other people meet Jesus and experience His love.  Pretty powerful, huh?  Jamie-Ivey-Pinterest-Quotw Jamie-Ivey-Pinterest-Graphic Jamie-Ivey-Pinterest-Graphic Jamie-Ivey-Pinterest-Graphic Jamie-Ivey-Pinterest-Graphic This mission keeps you on the same team.It keeps you working towards a common goal. EP. 092: How To Change Overthinking With Jon Acuff

APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW One of my all time favorite shows is Jeopardy. Indulge me for a minute and let’s play a round – I’ll give you the answer, you tell me the question. Ready? It steals time, creativity, and goalsIt’s the most expensive, least productive thing companies invest in without even knowing itIt’s an epidemic (Do you know what it is yet?) If you said, “What is OVERTHINKING” then you, my friend, are today’s Double Jeopardy winner! Now, before you go thinking that ‘It’s just who I am. It’s a personality trait.’ I’m going to shoot it to ya straight: It’s actually the sneakiest form of fear. NOT your personality. But! This is actually good news for the 99% of us (myself included!) who struggle with overthinking on a daily basis. That means that there is a CURE for all of our worrying, doubting, spinning! I mean, I can’t even tell you the number of times I question what I write, what I should share – wondering if anyone really even cares anyways. And where does that get me? In an unproductive and paralyzing cycle of fear.  If you make a pros and cons list (anyone else ever do this?) the ‘con’ side to overthinking would be filled with words like stress, anxiety, depression, conflict. In short, I guarantee this side would be a mile long. The ‘pros’ side however, would likely be empty. It would pale in comparison. Well, friend – if you resonate with this – YOU ARE NOT STUCK. This is all about to change!  In today’s podcast episode, I have an amazing conversation with best-selling author, Jon Acuff. And, his brand new release? You guessed it….is ALL about changing overthinking from a super problem, to a super power.  You see, overthinking tends to lean toward the negative. Left to its own devices, it will naturally gravitate toward things you don’t want to dwell on. Why? Because Fear does not take work. Doubt does not take work. Insecurity does not take work.  jon-acuff-pinterest-image jon-acuff-pinterest-graphic jon-acuff-pinterest-graphic jon-acuff-pinterest-graphic jon-acuff-pinterest-graphic

So what does this mean for you (and me!)?

How do you actually control your thoughts? What do you need to do?The answer: Change the ‘soundtrack’ playing your head. We all have them. Those pesky thoughts that creep in on a daily basis whether we want them there or not. (No one cares. What’s the point? I can’t do anything right) But, the biggest mistake you can make is to assume everything you think is true. It’s not!  So! How do you update that internal playlist? Rather than accepting every thought that pops into your head as truth, try filtering it through these 5 questions instead: Where did that come from? Is it true? Is it helpful/kind? What is it trying to teach me?Where is it shaping me? When you become aware of your soundtrack you have the power to change them. Jon tells us specifically how we can do just that in today’s episode where we also discuss: The definition of overthinking and what this means for your life, productivity, and creativityThe impact of positive vs. negative soundtracks in your lifeHow to flip the script on the broken, negative soundtracks playing on repeat in your head and turn them into powerful anthemsWays to use your thoughts as a powerful tool to propel (not paralyze) you toward your goals Friends, if you can worry, you can wonder; if you can doubt, you can dominate; if you can spin, you can soar. I can’t wait for you to do all of that and more after listening to today’s empowering episode!  Prefer to watch the episode instead? EP. 091: Simple & Free: 7 Ways to Pursue Less Over More With Jen Hatmaker

jen-hatmaker-pinterest-graphic APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Tell me.  What would you do if you actually hit the megamillion jackpot? What is the absolute first thing that comes to mind? ….buy a bigger house? Fill a closet with designer clothes? Take a dream vacation? Buy a fancy car? Dare you say that it could make your life ‘better’, maybe even ‘easier’??(Spoiler Alert!) While I don’t have any winning tickets to pass around today (don’t worry, this is not another round of that crazy McDonalds Monopoly madness), I do have something important to ask you. Something that I truly believe could be even more life changing, more achievable, more sustainable. Ready? WHAT IF we changed the question we are inherently asking ourselves here from what could we do with more  to … what could we do with less .  (Think I’ve lost my mind? Don’t write me off just yet!) I’m pretty sure we can all agree that we are living day in and day out in a culture that suggests to us that more is more is more. BUT, really think what it would look like if you decided to live with less….less stressless wasteless spendingless stuff What it would feel like to make room for more that matters…more joymore connectionmore generositymore freedom Is your mind blown yet?! I know mine was after I talked with best-selling author + podcast host, Jen Hatmaker today! You see, over 10 years Jen did an experiment. She identified seven areas of excess in her life—food, clothes, spending, media, possessions, waste, and stress—and asked herself what it would look like if she only had seven simple choices in each of these areas.  After a decade, her findings have proved to stand the test of time AND she has learned even more in recent years that she wants to share with YOU! Pretty impressive, huh?  I’m sure you are wondering but, how? Well… I’m so glad you asked!  The answer: interfasting. Yes, friends. Interfasting is actually a physical mechanism that will bridge the gap between where you are today and where you want to be. It is taking a step back, slowing down, and taking a real look at what you are assigning value to in your life and where some reassigning may be necessary.  Want to take the first step? Here is your challenge today– look at your life. Use Jen’s 7 categories to make it easy! And ask yourself these three questions: Where are you storing up too many treasures on this earth instead of Heaven? What is causing an unhealthy change of attitude, personality, or focus when it becomes threatened? What is the thing, outside of God, that you put everything else on hold for? Hard Hitting – I know.  jen-hatmaker-quote jen-hatmaker-pinterest-graphic jen-hatmaker-pinterest-graphic jen-hatmaker-pinterest-graphic jen-hatmaker-pinterest-graphic jen-hatmaker-pinterest-graphic Trust me. We both get it- MORE is TEMPTING. But, Jen’s process of fighting back against excess is not a list of rules, it’s not meant to make you feel guilty, and  it’s not about denying yourself — it’s about freeing yourself!  Freeing yourself from overwhelm. From debt. From clutter. But seriously. Really take some time to answer those questions with an honest evaluation. And then, make sure you listen to our full conversation where we also cover:  This counterintuitive idea of pursuing more when we would actually be happier with lessDive into the abundant life that can be found when we trade in excess for a truly reduced way of livingWays to identify the areas where you may have accidentally substituted the “american dream” for God’s KingdomHow to discover what you actually want to pursue more of and how to rid your life of the excess waste and stressSo. Much. Goodness!! It is SUCH a good conversation today!  So…are you ready to trade in overindulgence for simplicity and generosity? Are you ready to lead a radically better life of connection and abundance? Me too, friend! Let’s do it together!  Prefer to watch the episode instead? EP. 090: How to live BOLD with Grit, Gumption & Grace with Emily Ley

emily-ley-pinterest-graphic APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Spouse. Parent. Entrepreneur. Friend. Coworker.  How many hats are you wearing on any day of the week? It can cause a bit of whiplash, don’t ya think?! For me, my hats rotate between wife, daughter, author, podcaster, coach, friend, dog mom… just to name a handful! It can feel like a huge, rotating door at the front of a chaotic, noisy, and sometimes beautiful hotel. Always moving. Always welcoming in more and more. For better AND worse. It’s so easy to get lost in all of these hats (especially when these hats start to feel more like 50 pound boulders). It makes you stop and think – what parts of life am I actually choosing – and enjoying – any more? When did I stop choosing and start only responding and reacting to daily responsibilities? Do you ever stop and wonder – when did I say YES to any of this?! Why is this anyway? Maybe it’s because it’s easier to live a reactive life than make choices that are going to push us? Maybe it’s hard to believe that we are worth it? Maybe we don’t think we have the resources to live the lives we dream of? Can you think of anything that rings particularly true for YOU personally? Here is the truth friends…we only get one shot at life! Just one! We can let life happen to us, get lost in all we have to be – and, most likely live with regrets at the end of the day. OR we can focus on all that we already are and intentionally tackle life boldly! I’m preaching to myself here, too. Trust me. But when I was able to break it down to this level of simplicity, the choice became much more clear and easy. I chose the former. And I am committed to now choosing the latter. What about you? What are you going to choose today?  If you’re ready to get back to the basics with me, I’m going to give us a place to begin, right here. Right now. Step 1? Press pause + strip back the layers. I don’t blame you if you are asking is it really THAT simple?! BUT, before you go rolling your eyes, the answer is YES! And, here’s why! Pressing pause allows you the space to see what matters, and forget the rest. So what do you need to do today to forget your “rest”? Reevaluate your commitments? Not be afraid to ask for help? Carve out uninterrupted time just for you? I had a conversation with an all-time favorite guest (seriously! her first episode with us was our all time most downloaded episode ever!) and best-selling author – Emily Ley – as she broke this process down for me. Emily has skillfully mastered creating a life that she loves. Even in a full and busy schedule of running her business she built from nothing, she remains intentional with her choices, joy, and life decisions. Emily explains that there’s an aspect of growing boldly that requires us to press pause and strip back some layers so that we can get to know who we are in our heart of hearts again. So that we can clear the clutter and cultivate clarity! Can I get an AMEN?!

SO much goodness comes when we allow ourselves to do that!

When we actually allow ourselves the time to envision the life we want!We dive into all of the juicy how-to details and practical tips in today’s episode where we also cover: The roles that gumption, grace, and hard-won confidence play to become fully alive againThe idea of tenacity and how to press forward with momentum when things get hardHow to equip yourself to move past the lies and fears holding you backEmily’s actionable BUILD method to achieving the life you want to live3 language swaps you can start applying in your life TODAY I could talk with Emily for hours! SO! If you are ready to create a lasting legacy and do the hard work without forgetting to feed your soul, make sure to tune in to today’s awesome episode! Prefer to watch the episode instead? EP. 089: The Surprising Reason Why Positive People Have All The Energy

pinterest-graphic-meaghan-murphy APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Is it just me, or do you feel like walking through the last 12 months has left you feeling completely depleted of ENERGY?! It’s like I’m walking around with my tank on the proverbial E- for EXHAUSTED!  Between navigating Covid, podcasting, writing, house renovations, longing for things still in the waiting (just to name a few), there are days I’m ready to throw in the towel on any and all projects I’m working on! So…what about you? What do you find yourself worn out from today? Covid?Waiting?Illness? Work/life balance?Adulting?Life in general? Chances are, if you’re like me, you also have a list – one that is way longer than maybe you’re even willing to admit (aka – puts on running shoes to run from facing any and all problems.) Oh how easy it is to WANT to be the person who is bouncing through life with endless energy, positivity, and joy! I bet you can even imagine that person in your head right now as you read this! BUT… the list! It keeps getting in your way and you find yourself falling short of putting that wanting into becoming!  Well guess what?! I have some good news for the both of us. Today, I had a conversation with editor-in-chief of Woman’s Day magazine and new author -Meaghan Murphy – who is an EXPERT on actually becoming that person who can “bounce through life”. How do I know? Because she radically changed her very own life! The secret?  SMALL changes that yield BIG results! Did you know that happiness is a state of doing, not a state being? Doing small things. You don’t need a huge overhaul. meaghan-murphy-pinterest-quote That’s right… you can actually move your “happiness needle” everyday, without overwhelm.Let me share an example.  What if each day, you changed your “woe is me” to “why not me?”. Or changed your “have tos” to “get tos”? Really think about that for a moment! That simple flip of the script helps you to find your PURPOSE within that circumstance rather than just feeling stuck.  The greatest battle we have to fight is within the brain – within our own headspace. Just by flipping the script, we can make some truly remarkable transformations.  Yes… that means YOU have a choice!  I know it doesn’t feel like it. I know you might be saying ‘Mary, that’s good for you. It won’t work for me.’ But I’m here to ask: Why? Why would you be the exception to this? And what’s holding you back from at least trying? You can either let your brain focus on the negative- leaving you feeling apathetic, helpless, and drained. OR! You can choose an intentional response/action to the challenge in front of you that’s energizing, positive, and empowering! The best part?  You do not have to sacrifice who you are! Meaghan does not sugarcoat it when she says that just like the expression “it takes money to make money”, it also takes positivity to make positivity.  So! If you are ready for a radically simple approach to having endless energy, and you’ve already found these tips intriguing to implement – make sure you tune into today’s conversation where we also cover:  3 practical tips for practicing positivity so that you can choose to live each day with optimism and joythe power of the “Cheers Effect” if you live openly with your “cab lights” on, receptive to outside interactionshow positivity and choosing positivity on a moment by moment basis is something you can do to actually rewire your brainthe intriguing ideas of emotional contagion and force fields of positivity Friends, not everyday is awesome.  BUT if you are ready to learn to recharge daily and rewire your brain to make tomorrow MORE awesome + fill each day with YAY, then you are going to LOVE my conversation with Meaghan! More From This Episode:

EP. 088: Why Slow Growth Prepares You For Sudden Success w/ @SharonSaysSo

sharon-mcmahon-podcast APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER LEAVE A REVIEW

Okay, friends… are you ready to get REAL today?

Part of that is talking about Real FACTS. Real SOURCES. Real INFORMATION.

But part of that is also just getting real about how hard the last year has been on friendships and families as people on different “sides” of the issues dig in and see each other as the enemy.

If you are anything like me, you are fed up with the misinformation out there. Tired of the biased rhetoric. And longing for substantive conversations with friends and family on ALL sides of that ever divisive political aisle.  I think that we can all agree that it is no fun to feel frustrated, overwhelmed, or estranged from friends and family with differing viewpoints. Especially since even thinking about having a conversation with somebody who believes differently often leads to 1 of 2 things: Avoidance of having the hard conversations in the first place and leaving nothing substantive talked about.Cutting people out of our lives who believe differently than we do, because we can’t understand how they could see things the way they do. So the million dollar question becomes, “how do we learn to come together again?” This is the exact reason I had a chat my amazing new friend, Sharon McMahon (you probably know her as @sharonsaysso on Instagram!) on this exact topic. Sharon became an internet phenomenon from her recent viral content amidst the historic 2020 election proceeding. She’s even been coined as “America’s Government Teacher.” And the day before recording with us, she even appeared on The Daily Show w/ Trevor Noah! Her mission is simple: to cover daily headlines, break down national political coverage and biases, and extract the FACTS. And to do it all from a non-partisan standpoint! Sharon’s answer to the above question is as simple as her mission:  Listen to understand Seem too simple to be true? It’s not. And here’s why: Listening to understand does NOT obligate you to agree. Let that sink in for a minute. Feeling a little lighter? A little freer? I know I am.

Ready to apply this in real life? Me too!Not only do Sharon and I cover how to come together, we also dive into:  how you can become equipped to verify ‘facts’ with substantiated sourcesproven ways to break down misinformation to form better educated opinions versus assumptionsthe power of growing slowly over the long haul the new idea of “digital legacies” and what that means for the next generationSharon’s incredible heart service and the impact she continues to make It is such an informative conversation! So! If you are ready to trade in extreme bias and heated debates for true facts and substantive conversations, then I just know you are going to be blown away by today’s powerful conversation!  I can’t wait to hear what you think! More From This Episode:
