EP. 092: How To Change Overthinking With Jon Acuff
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW One of my all time favorite shows is Jeopardy. Indulge me for a minute and let’s play a round – I’ll give you the answer, you tell me the question. Ready? It steals time, creativity, and goalsIt’s the most expensive, least productive thing companies invest in without even knowing itIt’s an epidemic (Do you know what it is yet?) If you said, “What is OVERTHINKING” then you, my friend, are today’s Double Jeopardy winner! Now, before you go thinking that ‘It’s just who I am. It’s a personality trait.’ I’m going to shoot it to ya straight: It’s actually the sneakiest form of fear. NOT your personality. But! This is actually good news for the 99% of us (myself included!) who struggle with overthinking on a daily basis. That means that there is a CURE for all of our worrying, doubting, spinning! I mean, I can’t even tell you the number of times I question what I write, what I should share – wondering if anyone really even cares anyways. And where does that get me? In an unproductive and paralyzing cycle of fear. If you make a pros and cons list (anyone else ever do this?) the ‘con’ side to overthinking would be filled with words like stress, anxiety, depression, conflict. In short, I guarantee this side would be a mile long. The ‘pros’ side however, would likely be empty. It would pale in comparison. Well, friend – if you resonate with this – YOU ARE NOT STUCK. This is all about to change! In today’s podcast episode, I have an amazing conversation with best-selling author, Jon Acuff. And, his brand new release? You guessed it….is ALL about changing overthinking from a super problem, to a super power. You see, overthinking tends to lean toward the negative. Left to its own devices, it will naturally gravitate toward things you don’t want to dwell on. Why? Because Fear does not take work. Doubt does not take work. Insecurity does not take work.
So what does this mean for you (and me!)?
How do you actually control your thoughts? What do you need to do?The answer: Change the ‘soundtrack’ playing your head. We all have them. Those pesky thoughts that creep in on a daily basis whether we want them there or not. (No one cares. What’s the point? I can’t do anything right) But, the biggest mistake you can make is to assume everything you think is true. It’s not! So! How do you update that internal playlist? Rather than accepting every thought that pops into your head as truth, try filtering it through these 5 questions instead: Where did that come from? Is it true? Is it helpful/kind? What is it trying to teach me?Where is it shaping me? When you become aware of your soundtrack you have the power to change them. Jon tells us specifically how we can do just that in today’s episode where we also discuss: The definition of overthinking and what this means for your life, productivity, and creativityThe impact of positive vs. negative soundtracks in your lifeHow to flip the script on the broken, negative soundtracks playing on repeat in your head and turn them into powerful anthemsWays to use your thoughts as a powerful tool to propel (not paralyze) you toward your goals Friends, if you can worry, you can wonder; if you can doubt, you can dominate; if you can spin, you can soar. I can’t wait for you to do all of that and more after listening to today’s empowering episode! Prefer to watch the episode instead?
