EP. 125: 4 Steps to Resolve Conflicts with Ashley Abercrombie
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW It’s time to have those hard conversations you’re avoiding – with dignity, grace, and connection. Sound too good to be true? It’s probably because we believe the lie that it’s too difficult to engage with others and staying true to our convictions comes with too high of a cost. The consistently chosen path to avoid hard conversations isn’t ‘keeping the peace’ like we feel it might be – it’s pulling us further from true connection to one another. It’s time to be given new tools and resources so we aren’t living that lie any more! You CAN reconnect with the humans around you again – without the dread and without simply ‘giving in.’And today’s guest on the Mary Marantz Show is here to show you exactly how! Ashley Abercrombie, is speaking on how to resolve the conflicts you’ve been avoiding – even when it feels impossible.
In her new book, Love is the Resistance, Ashley challenges us to dig into our deeply-rooted opinions and reevaluate if we are glorifying Christ through our actions.
And she’s here to share all the insights that went into this guidebook to life on hard discussions. What I love about Ashley is how practical she is on these hard topics. For example, she breaks down how to approach a difficult conversation into 4 steps. Pray before reacting (seems simple, but do we ACTUALLY do this?)Ask yourself: What would it look like to have an attitude of curiosity Avoid crosstalk (and what exactly crosstalk is)Tune in for a deep dive on these items, along with the last and final step! Additionally, we are chatting about: How to be an example of patience and disagreeing with dignityThe scripture ‘You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies’ and their interpretationsThe tangible language swaps to love – even the hard people – wellAbout how we lead with love when there isn’t a relationship previously established (ahem, social media comments!)The different ‘buckets of concern’ that help keep your heart soft for causes you care about, without feeling helpless from the ‘bigness’ of the needIt’s time to reclaim your relationships and stop fearing the hard conversations – while also not watering down your opinions! You can do this, friend. More From This Episode:Connect with Ashley on Instagram and be sure to pick up her new book, ‘Love is the Resistance’ wherever books are sold.’

EP. 124: How to Choose Cozy Not Perfection with Liz Marie Galvan
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Fall has arrived here in Connecticut! The leaves are changing their beautiful colors. The air is cooling off from the warmth of summer. And, you can practically smell the pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and mulled cider scents of fall in the air. It’s as if the world outside is resetting. Quite honestly, I feel like I could use a reset too! Starting with the space around me! I’ve always felt like home should be a safe haven when the world outside gets hard. A tranquil place to retreat. A cozy place to do life with those who matter most. Here’s the problem. It can be overwhelming! “Where to start?” “What to do?” “How to begin?” I mean, by the time it’s all figured out in my head, I’m almost too exhausted to actually execute! How about YOU? Do you long to create a space this holiday season that surrounds you with warmth, love, and comfort? What if I told you that you could make this happen without the overwhelm?! Without the pressure of perfection?! Would you be in?If that sounds as good to you as it does to me, then you are in luck today! I am over the moon excited to share with you my conversation with Liz Marie Galvan! Yes, THE Liz Marie of the Cozy Cottage Style blog! The queen of DIY home decor and making cozy spaces. And today, she is all yours! I couldn’t agree with Liz more when she said, “Cozy is about transforming our own little corner of the world into a private refuge – not a place of perfection, but a place of peace.”
Yes! Sign me up for All. Of. That.
The question is, but how? According to Liz, perfection is not the goal. Instead we should design and decorate with the following mantras in mind: Imperfections make a home cozy – That sofa with a mark on it? It has a story behind it. That pillow that looks worn? Well, it’s seen generations of love. That faded throw blanket? It’s been used to cure many tears. Perfection is not cozy, but loving memories are.Be unapologetically you – It is SO easy to fall into the ‘trend trap’. Liz and I both share stories of our own struggles in this department. But! The KEY to a cozy home is creating a space for YOU and your family! It will never feel full of warmth and love if you are creating a space for someone else.
Tap into the 5 senses of each season – Creating the ideal space is about so much more than what you just see with your eyes. Think about it. When you walk away from someone’s home (especially around the holidays) what do you remember?… The smells in the air (hot cider on the stove at Thanksgiving or the scent of fresh pine needles at Christmas). The way it felt as you snuggled up on the sofa under a soft blanket and told stories. The taste of that overdue, bold fall wine shared between friends. The sounds of the season that filled the walls of the home. Friends, creating a home for you and your loved ones is about so much more than filling your rooms with “stuff.”If you are nodding your head along with me, you are going to love the rest of our conversation where we: Go beyond the surface of interior design and talk about the meaning and importance of having a cozy spaceOpen up and vulnerably share our personal childhood stories and what a safe, cozy home means to usDiscuss the importance of creating lasting traditionsDive into practical tips to set up your own home leading into the holidays Trust me when I say this episode is not to be missed! If you are ready to create a space to snuggle up and stretch out so you can focus on what matters most during this holiday season, then make sure to tune into today’s beautiful episode! I can’t wait to hear what tips and tricks you put into practice this fall and winter season! More From This Episode:

EP. 123: 8 Paradoxes Of Great Leadership with Dr. Tim Elmore
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW There’s something that some of the world’s greatest leaders need you to know! “Our confidence makes our leadership believable. Our humility makes our confidence believable.” These are the wise words of founder and CEO of Growing Leaders and author of the new book, The Eight Paradoxes of Great Leadership, Dr Tim Elmore. Tim has worked on the leadership team with John Maxwell for over 20 years, has appeared on CNN and FOX & Friends, and taught leadership to Delta Global Services, Chick-fil-A, Inc., and The Home Depot – so he definitely knows a thing or two about strong, kind-hearted leaders. What is so powerful about Tim’s teaching is that he believes the approach to great leadership isn’t a THIS or THAT perspective, it’s a BOTH AND framework. You see, many of us were brought up that we had to have ALL the answers and an abundance of confidence to become a truly magnetic leader.Tim believes differently. While yes, you need to have a level of confidence for people to believe in you – and you also need HUMILITY for others to believe in your confidence. Think about it: How did you feel the last time your boss or superior or someone you really respect truly came to you for YOUR advice on a matter? I bet pretty good. It takes a level of humility to ASK for the input of others when leading a group or desiring to be seen as an expert. But this is the KEY for others to jump on board alongside you to meet the common goal. Here’s an amazing metaphor Tim speaks about in this episode: The Elephant and the Rider Metaphor. Here’s how it goes. Within each of us, there is an Elephant and a Rider on top of the Elephant. The Rider on the Elephant is our logical thinking. The Elephant is everything else, including our feelings and subconscious! BUT! When that Elephant is in motion, the Elephant will take the Rider wherever it wants to go. Our feelings and subconscious are then the main driving force in our lives – but we aren’t even aware of it! As a result, we retroactively rationalize our actions to ourselves by saying ‘oh, well that’s where I wanted to go anyway!”
Our lifestyle and decisions then become separate from our intention – and it’s hard to identify where things turned a little wonky!
In this example, knowing how to manage the Rider and the Elephant is the key to great leadership.
You have intention in your decisions and awareness of your feelings. For more amazing metaphors and tangible leadership skills, tune in today’s episode of the Mary Marantz Show with Dr. Tim Elmore! The pair also dive into the nitty gritty of: What exactly is EQ and can you learn to have more of it (or is it only a natural born gift)How to trust your gut, but also remain teachable from respected voicesHolding your vision, but not overly educating yourself because your ‘weakness’ or ‘lack of experience’ might just be the thing that takes you to the next levelThe essential balance of these TWO traits to make you an effective leader Even if you are not in a position of leadership, you have the ability to access these leadership skills to influence (for the better) those around you. EP. 122: The Everyday Magic of Kindness with Taylor Tippett
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Are you ready to feel the magic of life again? You know the feeling – when you were able to find joy in small moments and lend a little kindness to others during your day? Some days, that sure feels like a distant memory. But, maybe, just maybe – it’s not quite as far away as it may feel right now. Further, if you’re anything like me – you probably have a tendency to overcomplicate things from time to time (what I’m really trying to refrain from saying is ‘all the time’ here…) But, because we’re friends – we lead with honesty. So, the over-complicators – here we are, united. And ready to change! Again, if we’re the same, my first thought when I’m ready for a ‘change’ is: What can I do better, faster, and more extraordinary than before? Because that’s the only way to change, right? Thankfully, I dove deeply into this way of thinking with my new friend, Taylor Tippett. And she was discussing with me that the loving solution doesn’t involve overachieving, or winning, or striving at all (and this coming from an Enneagram 3 wing). Taylor is here to give us a blueprint to finding the whimsy in life again on today’s episode of the Mary Marantz Show. Taylor, known as the flight attendant who leaves encouraging notes on passenger windows, was going through a rough season of life, feeling alone and discouraged, when she had a moment of clarity: everyone needs to know that they are not alone in the midst of their hardships. So, as she sat in the back of a Boeing 737 journaling, she wrote “be kind to yourself” and then hung it on one of the passenger windows. What started as a personal project to uplift others became a viral sensation as she started writing more notes–and #wordsfromthewindowseat was born. In her latest book, Words from the Window Seat: The Everyday Magic of Kindness, Courage, and Being True To Yourself, Taylor reminds us all that even in the middle of so much darkness and brokenness, it’s possible to make a difference and share your unique light. One of my favorite parts of our conversation was when Taylor was chatting about how to give yourself a pep talk when you need it most. She was saying how we don’t need to deny our own feelings and bring to mind some type of cliche quote floating around that we don’t actually believe about ourselves yet. Because, let’s be honest, that doesn’t really make us feel better does it?Taylor eloquently chatted through the importance of authenticity to OURSELVES – which involves a level of knowing yourself, too. So rather than scrolling Instagram for a quick fix of a quote that doesn’t actually resonate – YOU’RE in the driver seat to know what you need to validate your feelings and begin the healing process.
What I also found important about that part of the conversation is that we have within ourselves the ability to soothe our own pain and hurt in the times when we need it most. Of course this doesn’t mean *not* relying on others, but I do believe it helps to give the power back to ourselves.
Because we have the ability to choose what we do with our pain – even when we can’t always see it. In this vulnerable conversation, Taylor transparently shares her personal journey, including:Breaking off an unhealthy relationship, and acknowledging the unhealth of her own, personal patterns,The trauma in her childhood and how she copes with that now, andWhat it means to sit with your younger self to step into the fullness of who you were made to be,We also chat about:How to recognize the magic of small moments and the power of everyday kindness, The balance of getting better but also not beating yourself up in the process, andHow to create a pep talk for yourself when you don’t ‘win’ – because it’s okay to be humanThis uplifting conversation is here to bring a sense of lightness to your day, while also acknowledging the truth of what you’re going through. Friend, it’s not always easy, but we are so grateful you’re here. EP. 120: Surprising 5 Minute Fix to Change Your Thoughts & Change Your Life
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Have the last few months somehow turned into years – and you’re left feeling like you’re floating… sort of aimlessly? This ongoing lack of focus and defaulting into decisions can leave you feeling purposeless – and without motivation. You know you need to make a change, but you don’t even have the energy or resources to know where to start! Well, friend, I empathize with you – and know this: it’s time to break the patterns that are keeping you stuck because you’re worth so much more than that. You are capable and worthy of being full of JOY and DRIVE and PURPOSE. And I’m thinking this episode might just be what you need to jumpstart your journey. I’m bringing onto the show for a second time today my friend, Tanya Dalton. Tanya is a best-selling author, speaker, and sought after business coach for women entrepreneurs. In her most recent book,
On Purpose: The Busy Woman’s Guide to An Extraordinary Life of Meaning & Success
, Tanya aims to challenge you to shake the foundations of how you view your world and start to step into new opportunities that perhaps you didn’t realize were there. In this episode, Tanya and I are diving into exactly WHAT is keeping us in this default + lack of joy state, HOW we get there in the first place, and WHO we can become once we break these patterns. One of the powerful practices that Tanya suggests to overcome this state of ‘stuck’ is called The 5th Why. It’s so simple. And so effective. Essentially, in this exercise you ask yourself why 5 times in reference to an event or default action. Let’s say you didn’t get a promotion at work that you were REALLY hoping for. Start with asking: Why did I not get the promotion? Once you uncover the answer, then again ask WHY? WHY is THAT true? And, like magic, after the 5th why, you will uncover the ROOT of the initial outcome (in this case, not receiving the promotion).
This exercise helps to uncover a pattern of action and thinking that is keeping us STUCK.
Because when you get to the root, you can bring it to the surface and change it.But until you understand the root, the pattern will continue. Still not convinced? Tune in to today’s episode where Tanya walks ME through this practice. It is a bit vulnerable and I was definitely feeling pretty transparent, but I believe that is what this space is all about. Sharing our STUFF, so that the next person is brave enough to share theirs. In addition to this exercise, Tanya and I also chat about:The ACTUAL opposite of being STUCK, and how to step into it Why because it’s ‘always been this’ doesn’t mean ‘it will ALWAYS be this way’The trick to see a clear path of where your life is headingHow to use regret for good in your life Friend, if you’re feeling stuck without a way out – begin to recognize: you’re already in pain in your current state – don’t delay the process of stopping and recognizing these patterns. And today’s episode will show you exactly where to start. Because the painful parts of your story do not need to be regret, but a springboard of resilience. 5 Writing Prompts to Start Sharing Your Muddy Story
If you have a story you feel called to start sharing, but you don’t know where to start…. start HERE. These are 5 prompts to get you thinking about your story in a different way this week. Write them in a journal, in a Word document, or over on Instagram. Just start to get them out into the world.
1. “Something that has always been TRUE about my story is _______. But now that I’m older, I know that __________ is the TRUER version of that.” There is a great writing adage that says the drafts of our story go through versions of True, Truer and Truest as we dig deeper and look at it from all the different sides. We may have thought something was True about our story growing up (and to a certain extent it IS)…but now that we’re older and we know just how HARD being an adult is, we may see it from a more empathetic eye. What is something that has become TRUER about your story the older you get? 2. “When I think of that time in my life, I think of the color _______.” Is it red, is it blue, is it a sea of GOLD shirts 60,000 strong in a stadium. Is it the sky above you during a really hard scene? Is it the color blanket you wrapped your first born in? The color we associate with a scene in our memory can be celebratory… or heartbreaking. Take it a step further and make the color a repeating symbol throughout the passage (red, burgundy, crimson, blood). 3. “Tell me a time when someone said something in passing to you that has become a rule of life for you.”In my book Dirt I talk about trying to cut corners washing the dishes when I was little (only rinsing the grease off but not washing) and how integrity is often not seen, but felt. My Grandma Goldie told me in that moment that “how you do anything is how you do everything” and that has stayed with me ever since.
4. “Write about your story through the eyes of an inanimate object.”In Dirt there is a scene where I write from the perspective of the blueprint drawings I would sketch as a little girl wishing that our trailer could be converted into a two-story home. “There once was a blueprint who dreamed of being a real house. Everyday she would draw and re-draw her dimensions. She would stare at her plans and wish for someone else’s. Something grander, more ornate. She preferred walls to windows, and never missed an opportunity to become more closed off.”
5. “Write something where you don’t end up looking perfect.”Mary Karr, author of The Art of Memoir famously said “the best memoirists are the ones who are willing to punch themselves in the face first.” Start with something that shows me you are going to be honest with me as the reader, something that shows you intend to show up on the page just as you are flaws and all. This can be a scene you regret, something that shows your own selfish thoughts, owning up to a pain you caused someone else.
Your story matters. I can’t wait to read it.
