EP. 134: The 5 Achiever Types – A Love Letter to the Woman Afraid to Start
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Insecurity. Overthinking. Playing small. Despite your heart’s desire to break ground on building your dream, do find yourself an expert in avoidance instead? Perhaps, too overcome by the prospect of failure, rather than taking the steps to move forward, you feel safer staying in place. Paralyzed. Trust me, I get it! And honestly, I have to fight against it ALL the time! AND to add insult to injury (or in this case, fear to self-doubt)… It’s not just insecurity who comes uninvited to this self-doubt party. No. She brings her friends as well – perfectionism, overthinking, playing small, imposter syndrome. (Sound familiar?) All of the sudden, rather than chase your dreams, this circle of uninvited ‘friends’ have you second guessing yourself. Doubting your gifts. Playing down your God-given abilities. Before you know it, you feel safer to shy away, to not draw attention to yourself, than risk failure. You may be thinking, “Okay, but what’s the big deal if I decide to live within my comfort zone?” Because… The place where your gifts meet your story has the power to change lives!Friends, if there wasn’t some fear around the work that you are called to do changing people’s lives, then the enemy would have no need to make you doubt it… if he didn’t see the potential that it had then you wouldn’t matter so much to him. (Yikes- let that sink in for a minute because that is for somebody right now!) Do we all get stuck from time to time? Of course! It honestly happens to me all the time. Pretty much every day. In fact, I’m so far out of my comfort zone at this point, that to not get tripped up by insecurity and her squad of uninvited friends would be the unusual thing. But, at this point in my life, I have just learned to take it as a sign that whatever ‘thing’ I’m trying to get started on.. that I’m trying to get some traction on….It must be on the right track. It must really matter. So! What can we do to ensure that we don’t keep getting stuck?! Let me break this down for you: Step 1: Take the first step! Action breeds clarity and momentum favors movement. Think of a puzzle for instance. When you first begin, the whole thing seems to be like a mess, right? It seems to be taking forever. You’re not even sure if the pieces fit together. You have no idea what the big picture is that you’re after. But step-by-step piece by piece, the bigger picture becomes clear. Pretty soon you look up and you can’t believe how quickly it all came together. And now you’re staring at a picture in front of you… staring back of what it always could have been, but it never would have happened without that first step of action in the midst of the mess. (Pretty mind blowing when you think about it, huh?) I have two more super practical, yet potentially life-changing steps that I can’t wait to share with you in today’s second solo episode of my Slow Growth Equal Strong Roots season! I’m SO excited for you to tune in as I am tackling all things insecurity and how doubt can manifest itself depending on what type of achiever you are! And, I have crafted a special quiz for you to help you identify your achiever type (Performer, Tightrope Walker, Contortionist, Masquerade, or Illusionist) that is live today! Not only is the quiz going to tell you which type you are, it’s then going to walk you through your strengths and your most common pitfalls that keep you stuck. Most importantly, I will give you an action plan for where you go from here! Trust me when I say today’s short episode packs a punch! Make sure to tune in as I dive into: The hold that the fear of failure has over our lives and what we can do about it The ways insecurity and her ‘friends’ try to make us doubt ourselves The myth that you have to have it all figured out in order to get startedSpecific steps you can take the next time, fear, insecurity, perfectionism, or doubt tries to keep you stuck If you are ready to put your gifts to use and stop playing small, then make sure to tune into today’s episode for the encouragement you need to move forward today!

EP. 133: Why Purpose is Far More Important than Popularity with Sadie Robertson Huff
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Will I ever matter? Will I ever be ENOUGH? Will I ever be loved for me…even the muddy parts of me? I don’t know about you friends, but questions like these have haunted me for 40 years. 40 years of unintentionally longing for the approval from others. Striving to be seen. Wanting to be loved. On the fast track to burnout and self doubt. Does that sound exhausting to you? (Spoiler alert: it is!) It’s no wonder many of us feel like we are walking around each day as just a shell of ourselves. A mere skeleton of who we once were. Always performing. Always needing to be ‘on’. Always striving for perfection so that we can finally matter. Finally be enough. “If I can just get to x number of followers.” “If I can just get x number of likes.” Constantly measuring and comparing with every scroll through social media only to walk away with a greater sense of longing – not fulfillment. Well, I’m putting my foot down. ENOUGH is ENOUGH. I have done the research for you (my life, the unintended experiment) and I can tell you, your striving isn’t going to get you anywhere other than a life on a never ending, never satisfying hamster wheel. Whoa. Just take a minute to let that sink in! Have you ever run from hard things in your life? Perhaps there is something you are struggling with right this very minute.
SO! This Valentine’s week it is time that we see ourselves as the worthy daughters of the King that we are! And, it is my sincere hope that you will join me! If you think that sounds good, just wait until you hear today’s episode with best-selling author, motivational speaker, the sweetheart of A&E’s “Duck Dynasty”, and “Dancing with the Stars” runner up – Sadie Roberston Huff! I guarantee you are going to walk away encouraged and empowered! Sadie is wise beyond her years and totally nails it when she says: “Jesus does not want you to be another hidden follower in the crowd. Striving just to be enough. You do not have to reach some level of perfection or likability for Jesus to acknowledge you. He loves you with an unending love.”YES! Let me tell you a secret. It’s okay to want to be seen and loved! It’s hardwired in us. BUT! It’s where we seek out these things that gets us in trouble. When we strive for popularity and passion over purpose we will never be content. Sadie shares such an enlightening study today about the different areas of our brain and how our pleasure centers actually die when they get overworked. We become numb to the things that once brought us pleasure because we’ve already experienced it. It becomes too familiar. …versus purpose… While pleasure can die, purpose keeps you going.
So, how do we find our purpose? The answer is simpler than you may think. And, it is yours for the taking TODAY. As Sadie wisely put it,“Your purpose isn’t waiting on a platform. Your purpose isn’t waiting for you to do something crazy. Your purpose is just to love God and love people wherever you are. And if you do that, there will be fulfillment.”Similar to “Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots” (hitting shelves in just 2 months!!), Sadie’s latest book “Who Are You Following”, is based on the premise that striving for your worth will never be enough because “arrival” is just a mirage. Instead, we need to turn to Jesus. No matter your stage in life right now, I guarantee that today’s episode will leave you with fresh eyes and a full heart. So! Make sure to tune in as Sadie and I also cover: How to go from being liked to being truly lovedThe importance of being truly known vs. being seen from the outsideThe difference between connection and popularity Stepping into purpose in the face of criticism Friends, if you are ready to lean into grace, freedom and purpose over popularity while resting in the knowledge that you are truly loved and known, then today’s episode is NOT to be missed. You are seen. You are loved. You are enough. Happy love week!

EP. 132: On Rest: Why Peace is a Practice with Morgan Harper Nichols
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Rest. All of us need it. Most of us reject it. In fact, for many of my overachieving, perfectionist friends out there (also speaking from experience myself here), “rest” is just another dirty, 4-letter word! A word that shouldn’t dare be muttered from our lips! (Yes, Enneagram 3 friends… I am looking at you!) The internal dialogue goes something like this: If I rest, I will fall behind. If I rest, I won’t be relevant anymore. If I rest, I will be seen as weak. So clearly if I connect the dots there, ‘to rest’ is the antithesis of ‘to achieve’….(or, is it??) Hmm… If any of these statements resonate with you, then you are definitely in the right place today, friend! In my new book “Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots” (hitting the shelves in April!), I talk all about how we can’t achieve our way into worth! Quite the opposite actually. In fact, no matter how hard you run, you can’t outrun you. You will be left exhausted. Longing for rest. Longing for peace.Friends! I am SO excited about today’s guest (a 3rd time guest to the show)- Morgan Harper Nichols – because the words from her new book, “Peace Is a Practice” ring so true to me! And! They also compliment the heart behind “Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots” just perfectly. Today Morgan offers up practical advice to become a peacemaker in your own life… starting right where you are, and in some of the most unexpected places. It resonated with me so much when Morgan said: “We can still breathe deep and make the most of where we are…even if it doesn’t look exactly how we hoped or planned.”SO true!
To breathe deep and find rest is NOT to find failure. To find rest is actually to find a deep and rooted peace that surpasses all understanding. If you are asking yourself how to go about that, keep reading! Have you pre-ordered my new book Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots? If you’ve been living in a world of overachieving and desiring to find rest, this book will speak to your soul.
Between unanswered prayers, regret of the past, fear of the future and so much more, finding peace and rest in your life may seem very unattainable. I get it. I am right there with you. BUT! If you are like me and have ever found yourself approaching life’s challenges with anything other than faith and a calm confidence, then here is something you must to do today: Physically inhale and write down everything that you want to take in this yearPhysically exhale and write down everything that you want to let go of this year Friends, Morgan explained it best as she was talking about inhaling and exhaling being symbolic for absorbing all that life has to offer and taking it in, BUT also not being afraid to let go. So, I went ahead and asked Morgan to share with us what she is personally taking in this year and what she has decided to let go of. (Make sure to tune in today to hear her answer!) And… I challenge you to do the same! This one small step that can make a big difference on your personal journey of rest and peace.
We chat about this and so much more in today’s episode as Morgan and I cover: Generational grief and the power of storytelling How to show up everyday despite your circumstancesWays to create beauty in a world that feels brokenThe importance of letting go of ‘picture-perfect’SO. GOOD! If you are ready to breathe in all of the grace available to you and release everything that is outside of your control, then make sure to tune in to today’s must-listen episode! I can’t wait for you to listen!

EP 131: Why You Should Ease Off the Gas Pedal with Allie Trowbridge
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW What on earth did we ever do before GPS? Please tell me that I am not the only one who remembers stopping at gas stations for directions – or better yet, carrying a map in the glove compartment of the car. Thank goodness for modern technology, right?! Because now, we have multiple GPS choices at our fingertips to help us navigate. In fact, not only do we have step-by-step directions always readily available, we can even get directions that show the quickest routes, where we should turn to avoid traffic, the best time of day to leave, etc. Everything is so perfectly orchestrated and mapped out that when we do hit a bump along our path that slows us down, it throws us off. We stop enjoying the ride and begin to obsess over the time to our final destination. Hmm…I can’t help but believe that this is a perfect metaphor for life as well! Think about it! How many of you feel that you’ve been waiting your whole life to get to a certain destination? To wake up one day and finally feel like you have arrived? Perhaps even stretch out your arms and revel in a sense of finished and accomplishment. (Umm… guilty!) If this is you, you are going to LOVE today’s guest, author and CEO – Allie Trowbridge. She sums it up best when she says: “Of course you may end up taking a roundabout course to get somewhere, but what makes the road trip worthwhile may be the very time spent on the scenic routes. So ease off the gas pedal a bit and take some time to choose your soundtrack. Stop for photos at the lookouts.” Yes, friend! Preach! I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve inadvertently mapped out my own trajectory marked by milestones of goals, achievements, and successes. Only to look back and realize that while I checked the box, I missed the ride.
What specifically comes to mind for me is law school. If I’m being honest with myself, I don’t feel like I enjoyed it as much as I could have because I spent the whole time in survival mode. Running from my story, trying to achieve my way into worth, trying to prove that I belonged there. Never allowing myself to be fully immersed. How about you? Have you ever gotten so caught up in the drive to achieve and become that you forgot to slow down to savor and embrace your journey? While I really hope not, I can’t help but imagine this is something that many of us struggle with… Allie and myself included. I absolutely LOVED my conversation with Allie today! She shares a story about a sabbatical she took and how it was the hardest yet most life changing three months. Why? Allie says: “It helped me finally come to a place of stillness where I was able to see myself as okay without achievement.”(Clearly we are kindred spirits!) I would love to challenge you today to find a way to come to this same realization! To stop achieving for your worth! How? Allie offers up these three suggestions:Trust the pursuit while releasing the outcomeBelieve that your life’s journey is your life’s destination.Achieve from a place of joy, not out of a deficiency or a need to prove
Friends, this is an unbelievable conversation! Make sure to tune in as Allie and I also cover: How and why you should give up achieving or performing or your worthReasons you should focus on the process instead of the end goalTips for learning to avoid regretThe power of stillness, rest, and following your intuition If you are ready to enjoy the ride instead of regretting the path, then you will not want to miss today’s incredible episode!

EP. 130: When Someone Else Gets Everything You Wanted with Lisa Whittle
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Do you see that girl over there? The one that is constantly lingering in the back of your mind. You know… the one with the perfect career, the perfect life, the perfect family. Yes, I am talking about the metaphoric “her”! We all have a version of “her” in our lives that the enemy dangles in front of us wanting us to succumb to envy, comparison, and self-doubt. In a world riddled by jealousy, waiting, and loss, it is SO easy to struggle with seeing the good in our own lives, because we are too busy envying the good in ‘her’ life. You see, the enemy has a way to make us doubt the very things we are supposed to lean into. Even as my second book is about to enter the world in just a short couple of months (yay!), I STILL struggle with being ‘good enough’. With looking up from my lane to see who is ‘ahead’ of me, instead of focusing on the task at hand. Friends, learning to value the character of who I am becoming over the ‘gold star’ is something that has taken me almost 40 years to learn… and, has not come easy. So! It is for that reason that I am thrilled and honored to have my friend and best-selling author, Lisa Whittle, back on the podcast today to keep us honest! Lisa does not mince words when she says: “Hard things are a part of life. Yet, they don’t have to have the final word. They can become the keys to our greatest usability in the kingdom of God—that is, if we let God make good of them, rather than running away and refusing the growth we truly crave”. Whoa. Just take a minute to let that sink in! Have you ever run from hard things in your life? Perhaps there is something you are struggling with right this very minute.
If that is you, I want to encourage you to take Lisa’s profound advice to sit through the uncomfortable with Jesus rather than run away!
If you are wondering why on earth you would do that when it feels like everyone else has everything that you want, rest assured that:
So! How do we combat comparison in order to live a life of usability?
Admit the truth to yourself and God – things kept in the dark cannot be addressedCombat jealousy with generosity – rather than let yourself stew, find a way to serveStop making excuses – don’t just write off comparison as your competitive driveShift your perspective – what if the person you envy is actually in your life for a specific reasonSeriously! My time with Lisa never disappoints! You are in for such an incredible conversation today where we also discuss:

I will leave you with this final quote from Lisa:
“A GOOD LIFE EQUALS A LIFE OF KINGDOM USABILITY, NOT FAME, FORTUNE, OR EASE.”I can’t wait for you to take a listen! EP. 129: Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots with Mary Marantz
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Fatigue. Lack of motivation. Exhaustion. Despite all of the ‘New Year, New You’ mantras, are you still trying to figure out the way back to YOURSELF? I know it all too well. That is exactly where achieving for my worth landed me, too. In total burnout mode. And I’m not even just talking about costing off to the side of the road because the tank has run out of gas type of burnout. No. I am talking about flying down the highway at a hundred miles per hour and the transmission falls out ….and then you skid into a brick wall type of burnout. I have been there. (All too often, really.) Believing that I was invincible to burnout. Thinking that I could achieve my worth. Feeling an intense need to prove to myself, and to others, that I could outrun the muddy parts of my story. If, like me, you have been achieving, striving, performing for your worth for so long that you are, at last, exhausted, then listen up: no matter how hard you run, you can’t outrun you. Friends, I am SO excited for this season of the podcast where we are focusing on exactly that! If you are ready to: Stop running from your story and truly live in the freedom that your identity and calling are determined by GodTruly believe in your heart that you are NOT in a race with anyone. Find encouragement in knowing that slow growth equals strong roots… … then this season is for you! Why? Because now the real work can begin! Together, we can finally start to strip the things that no longer serve, and dig down deep into who God is calling us to be! If you are thinking to yourself, “Mary, this all sounds good…but, how?”, then let me encourage you to do something today: Ask God to show you the miracles right in front of you.
It takes a radical act of courage to see beauty among the broken, but it is no less radical or courageous to witness the miracle among the mundane.
Let this be your wake up call! Today’s episode is the heartbeat behind this season of the podcast that is all about giving up overachieving for our worth, trying to gold star and highlight reel our way into being enough of something in order to matter. Make sure to tune in today as I also: Provide you with tangible tips to get you jump started on your new journey toward freedom (not burnout) Invite you to pause, reflect, and step back into your true self Discuss what ‘at last, exhausted’ means for you and your lifeTeach you how to get the wonder back in your life that you used to dream about as a child If some days (okay, maybe MOST days), you’re at the end of your rope, tune in to borrow some hope for your upcoming week. And, be sure to stick around until the end of the episode to hear my “Slow Growth” prayer for you!

EP. 128: Learning to Love Who God Made You to Be with Lauren Alaina
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Are we fangirling a bit today? Why yes, yes we are.
When I was on vacation in Nantucket with Justin years ago, we decided to rent a Jeep and go on a drive to a lighthouse called Great Point. The drive to this lighthouse was beautiful, and it also felt very much in line with my life at the moment.
I was going through a time where I was really doubting myself and if I had it in me to continue on the journey of chasing my dream.
I was in the middle of pivoting my brand from being known as a ‘photographer’ to an ‘author.’ And while this was a brand pivot, it felt a lot more like an identity pivot.
I was trying to figure out who I was if I wasn’t a photographer. We were going down a road less traveled — literally and figuratively in the moment — but I knew and believed there was something beautiful on the other side of this drive.Have you ever been there?
A life transition – expected or not – will shake out all the loose ends of our identities, and what is left after this painful sifting process is stronger than what was there before — but it doesn’t always feel like that in the moment.
Well, it was during this specific trip, on that specific drive, that a song came on and it spoke right to that fragile heart of mine.
Some of the lyrics were:
“If you trust your rebel heart, ride it into battle. Don’t be afraid, take the road less traveled.” What.I mean — are there words that could have spoken to me any MORE in that moment? I think not.
Well, fast forward a couple of years — and I’m sitting across from the artist of that song– interviewing her and ask her all about her journey and that song. And the dear, sweet, gracious thing about this moment is that it only happened because I stayed true to myself and believed in myself to make that life pivot.
Had I not had enough belief in myself to make that pivot — I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to interview the songwriter behind the song that means so much to me.
What a truly beautiful full circle moment.
So, here we go. Today on the Mary Marantz Show, we have on the one and only Multi-Platinum-selling singer-songwriter, Lauren Alaina.
Lauren Alaina was the runner up of American idol when she was only 15. She has since gone on to become a multi-platinum selling country, superstar winning the 2017 ACM New Female Vocalist of the Year Award, the CMT Breakthrough Video of the Year for Road Less Traveled and countless other CMT, CMA and billboard nominations.
And now! She is also the author of the brand new book, Getting Good at Being You: Learning to Love who God Made You to Be.
In our conversation, we get right into it — we are talking about:
How the world will try to change you, How no goal will ever fill you, and What it means to know and believe where your dream is headed even before anyone else can see it.There was one thing (out of many!) that Lauren said during this conversation that really stood out to me. She said…
“…you don’t need a template or a blueprint to have success in your respective industry.”This may seem simple and obvious as a stand alone statement, but in a world where we are inundated with comparison through Instagram, inspiration from Pinterest, and motivation from videos — it can be really difficult to create YOUR OWN blueprint for the path you want to take.
I find Lauren’s courage to push back on industry standards and pave an authentic path of her own extremely refreshing and inspiring.
If you find yourself beat down that the path paved for you to achieve your heart’s dream doesn’t feel authentic to you — this episode will give you the permission to follow your goal YOUR way.

EP. 127: What To Do When God’s Promises Feel Out of Reach with Yvonne Orji
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Have you ever felt a dream deposited into your heart that you KNOW God hand made and presented to you – but you aren’t seeing even an ounce of that dream come to fruition?
I know I have. Whether it was business goals or personal milestones, I’ve felt forgotten, betrayed and duped at times. Why is God giving me these dreams and this hope in what feels like the most hopeless situation?I had a conversation about this exact thing with my new friend, Yvonne Orji. And boy – just let me tell you – buckle up for this one. Yvonne is a stand-up comic and actress, best known as Issa Rae’s BFF on the HBO series, Insecure. But before this – Yvonne found herself in a situation where she had less than $8 to her name, despite holding a master’s degree. In her new book, Bamboozled by Jesus, Yvonne hilariously exposes the trials and victories she has experienced on the way to the life of her dreams. And let me just tell you, things didn’t exactly go according to plan along the way. During this conversation, there was a statement Yvonne made that truly struck me to my core and one I’ve been pondering “Every lesson unlearned is a lesson repeated. But sometimes, it’s NOT the same thing. We can think we are going through the same thing – it looks familiar, but WHO you are in it is different.
Will you learn this lesson as the new version of you?”And boy did that stop me in my tracks. Yvonne is hilarious – but I was so delightfully surprised as I was making my way through her book that she is also so wise and thought-provoking. We are constantly learning and refining ourselves, but do we take enough time to slow down and truly evaluate who we are showing up as in what may feel like a similar situation? As a result, I believe this allows space for so much grace and growth and gratitude – especially in a situation that may feel unending. After listening, I encourage you to borrow some of Yvonne’s bravery and resilience – and maybe even a touch of her humor – to persevere through those dark hours. Tune in to also hear us chat about: Why being bamboozled by God is sometimes the most loving thing He can do Why every lesson unlearned is a lesson repeatedWhat it means to really have a friendship with God – and not just the fluffy sentiment and idea of thisHow to return to the truth that God’s timing is true to His promisesWhat exactly to do when it feels like God is giving you hope in a position of hopelessnessWhatever greatness, whatever joy we may hope for, Yvonne is here to tell us that God has something even bigger and better in store for us – if we can just trust Him and be open to having our minds blown by His goodness, His creativity, and His knack for surprises. EP. 126: How to Find Your Voice & Run Your Business with Ashlyn Carter
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER LEAVE A REVIEW There’s nothing more frustrating and deflating than KNOWING you have an impactful message to share – but feeling as if your words fall flat or don’t connect once you put them out into the world. If you’re feeling this way today – hear me when I say – you’re not alone! I wish I could put your face in my hands and remind you today:YOUR WORDS MATTER.This truth is hard to remember when the world (ahem: Instagram) seems to reward the easy to read, easy to share quotables that don’t really require us to dig deeper or do the heart work to make a change. And this is the exact reason why I brought on my friend, brilliant copywriter, and super successful entrepreneur, Ashlyn Carter, on the podcast today. Ashlyn is the premier expert for copywriting for creative entrepreneurs. She’s the founder and CEO at Ashlyn Writes®, a copywriting business and marketing curriculum source for creatives. 90+ 1:1 clients, 5,000+ students, and 7-figures in revenue later, she’s pinpointed what it is that helps lock in half-a-million dollar launches for digital marketing campaigns. And she’s here to help us (myself included!) find our brand voice and put our businesses on the path to change lives. Here’s the thing about Ashlyn: She is equal parts HEART driven and STRATEGY driven. And this episode is no different. She’ll pack a punch on your heart strings while also handing over her elite, copywriting strategies. One of my favorite and tangible parts of this episode was when she explained her exercise of COPY BANKING. Essentially, copy banking is when you create a copy collage kit of words that make you smile and engage. As you start to notice how other’s words make you feel, you’ll begin to pick up phrases from anywhere! A meme account, a book, a sermon, wherever! You’ll be surprised when a word or message delights you. As a result, when you sit down to write a caption, your message will pull from your knowledge, and your style from your copy bank!
You’ll be equipped from your expertise, and also relatable from your brand voice. In this episode, we are also covering:How to serve your audience really well through your email and websiteWhat’s probably wrong on your about page on your websiteThe 3 T’s of voice to connect the dots between your content and your ideal client How to put your business on the path to change lives What copy banking is and how it will save you so much time!If you’re ready to sound like yourself, show up confidently, and attract raving fans to your brand – turn this episode all the way up and get out your notebook!
