EP. 184: To Be Human is to Suffer…Now Here’s the Good News with Dr. Curt Thompson
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | PANDORA SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW How well do you truly connect with the parts of your story that involve suffering?
Do you find it hard to believe that anything GOOD could come from your suffering?
Today on The Mary Marantz Show, I’m joined by renowned psychiatrist, speaker, and author, Dr. Curt Thompson. And let me tell you, while we may be delving into the depths of human suffering – what you’ll come out of this episode with is durable HOPE.
Dr. Curt Thompson weaves together an understanding of interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB) and a Christian view of what it means to be human — to educate and encourage others as they seek to fulfill their intrinsic desire to feel known, valued, and connected. He understands that deep, authentic relationships are essential to experiencing a healthier, more purposeful life — but the only way to realize this is to begin telling our stories more truly. Through his workshops, speaking engagements, books, organizational consulting, private clinical practice, and other platforms, he helps people process their longings, grief, identity, purpose, perspective of God, and perspective of humanity, inviting them to engage more authentically with their own stories and their relationships. Only then can they can feel truly known and connected and live into the meaningful reality they desire to create.
In his most recent book, The Deepest Place: Suffering and the Formation of Hope, Thompson invites us to explore how the Apostle Paul’s experience of love, secure attachment, and the deeply felt sense of God’s abiding presence carried him through the challenges he faced–and how it can help us not just survive, but flourish in the presence of suffering.
In this episode, we talk about:
The role of recognizing unresolved wounds and our fears of abandonment. The significance of co-regulating emotional distress and the impacts of lonelinessThe four attachment styles that drive our relationshipsWhy most of us stop at flimsy hope “From understanding the signals our brains send, to uncovering the wounds that keep us from truly being seen, this episode will challenge you to reflect on your own journey and explore the healing path to enduring hope.” How Suffering Multiplies Within UsDr. Curt begins the episode by questioning our awareness and connection with the hardest parts of our stories. He suggests that many of us possess the tools to navigate life effectively, but frequently distract ourselves from the parts of ourselves we want to avoid confronting.
However, the brain, which is generally considered trustworthy, sends us subtle signals that go beyond the obvious, indicating to us that we can no longer operate in this manner.
“We are going to do what we are going to do until the system says it won’t do it that way anymore. And, when the system signals it’s done, the real question is, will we then be willing and open to allowing our brain to tell us what it wants to tell us and be present to the fact that there is something else going on that we need to address.”
Our ultimate goal is not some moment of arrival, but a transformative process of personal growth and self-discovery. The longer we choose to bypass that necessary training, the more our growth is hindered, impacting our ability to embrace a fulfilled life.

Community as the Embodied Presence of JesusJust like physical pain, Dr. Thompson believes that emotional pain should not be ignored. As humans, we are innately wired to be resilient but if we lack secure attachment, many of us become accustomed to burying our pain or utilizing coping methods to survive. Drawing from the teachings of the Bible, he explains that the separation between man, woman, and God, as depicted in Genesis, contributes to our primal feelings of isolation and anxiety.
“If I do not have enough practice learning how to co-regulate my emotional distress I will come to believe that any emotional distress is something I will have to deal with on my own. But what we need more than anything is an embodied experience of sensing what it means to be loved. To share the hardest parts of ourselves with another and experience their mercy and unwavering presence. That is what allows suffering to be transformed in ways that we would never have imagined.”
He suggests that the God of real love desires His image bearers to grow fully into who they are meant to be, keeping in mind that their wounds should not define them.
“But what we need more than anything is an embodied experience of sensing what it means to be loved. To share the hardest parts of ourselves with another and experience their mercy and unwavering presence.”
The Lifelong Journey of RedemptionUltimately, Dr Curt is emphasizing the importance of being seen and understood by others, and highlights the four attachments that continue to impact us throughout our lives, being seen, soothed, safe, and secure.
“The wounds that we have received in the course of our lives mean that one or more of these experiences did not happen and when they don’t happen we get stalled at certain developmental stages. In which, I then find myself suffering in those spaces but I cover up for them because I am effective enough in other dimensions of my life.”
Though we are capable of learning how to supplement those needs, we will never truly move through them without them being met by others. Therefore creating a safe space, whether it be within family, church, or a small group, allows individuals to take risks, make mistakes, and find security.
It is a lifelong process but that sense of security is the bedrock for personal growth and the development of enduring hope amidst suffering.
From the significance of being present – to our suffering to the vital role of community in our healing process – Dr. Curt offers fresh insights and challenges listeners to explore the underlying wounds that inhibit enduring hope.
May this episode be your reminder: “As we lean into transformation, may we find the courage and wisdom to face our suffering head-on and discover the beauty and goodness that await us on the other side.”

EP. 183: Prayer Starters for the Hardest Parts of Your Story with Suzie Eller
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Are you weighed down by the labels you received in your childhood?
Do you feel defined by the hardest parts of your past?
In today’s episode of The Mary Marantz Show, author, Bible teacher, and speaker, Suzie Eller,
guides us through a deeply personal and spiritually enlightening conversation about the narratives that still impact us and the purpose of unpacking our pain.
Suzie Eller is an ECPA bestselling author, podcaster, international speaker, and Bible teacher, ministering to women across the U.S. and in several countries. Suzie has written 12 books and her latest is Prayer Starters: Talking with God about Hard Times, a guide for creative connection with God in any season. She’s the host of the KLRC network podcast, Prayer Starters, and co-host, along with Holley Gerth and Jennifer Watson, of More Than Small Talk (listen to Mary’s episode with them!), also with the KLRC network. She’s a popular media guest and has been featured on Focus on the Family, Aspiring Women, Harvest Show, 100 Huntley Street, KLOVE, Daystar and many others. Suzie lives in NW Arkansas with her family, and loves to kayak, hike, and dance with her littles at the farmer’s market.
In this thought-provoking conversation, the pair delves into:
The effects of generational traumaThe necessity of holding space for a different perspective in our storyThe true definition of joy “If you are ready to redefine your legacy, stop feeling disqualified by your muddy story, and live into the present moment before you, you’re in the right place.” Reframing the StoryToday, Suzie and I dug into the idea of ‘letting go’ in her personal, healing journey. The story she told about witnessing someone losing their belongings bit by bit without even realizing it is one I won’t soon forget. Here’s what she said…
“It’s a process and we are consistently unpacking and taking things out that were never meant for us. They’re old, used, dirty, and passed down, and in their place, God gives us new ways of thinking and new ways of being.”
Instead of succumbing to pressures to appear unaffected by challenges and difficulties, she believes in valuing the unique kind of beauty that comes from having a hard story (you know I love this!). Through this, she reminds us that it’s okay not to have it all together and that resilience can grow amidst our vulnerabilities.
And, by getting to the root source of our perspective we can begin to show up as the person we are versus the child we once were.
Mary’s new book, slow growth equals strong Roots is HERE! Click HERE to Order your copy today!
Navigating the HardAs we all know, suffering is inevitable in this life. But Suzie’s perspective on how we can deepen our connection with the presence of God during these times was a gift to listen to.
“When I was diagnosed with cancer during the pandemic, I had a friend show up and say I am mad at God because you have done nothing to deserve this. And I got to look at her and say, thank you so much for loving me so much to tell me that, but this is who God is right now in the midst of this. This is what He’s doing and these are the things that He’s speaking over my heart. And is it hard? Yes, but this is who Jesus is, and He has not changed.”
The purpose of suffering is nuanced because although I believe that God does not orchestrate hardships for us.
He loves us deeply in the midst of our struggles and offers us a way to find beauty and life even in the scarred and imperfect parts of our lives…
“It may not be the plan we would have chosen for ourselves but we will always have the promise of His presence in our suffering.”
Embracing Ordinary Suzie’s words serve as such a reminder that there is great significance in embracing ordinary moments as avenues for God to work through us in extraordinary ways.
Because even though the world may overlook our contributions or the challenges we face, what God does through us holds eternal significance.
“You can lament, you can cry, and you can be messy. An honest prayer is one of the most beautiful prayers you can pray to God because you’re talking to Him from right where you are.”
From that place of vulnerability and openness, we can begin to prayerfully discern the source of negative thoughts, address deep-rooted wounds, and experience true healing and restoration.
So friend, instead of denying our struggles let’s lean into them and embrace the ordinary moments where God’s presence can shine through. Because even amidst the most challenging circumstances, there is an opportunity for growth, resilience, and deep spiritual connection.
May this episode be your reminder: “We are only given today so what is He calling you to?”
I can’t wait for you to take a listen! And if you are looking to give up comparing, performing, and achieving for your worth, I think you’ll LOVE my new book Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots! APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Do you ever feel like you missed your shot?
Like somewhere along the way you took the wrong turn or missed an opportunity that couldn’t be corrected?
Maybe it wasn’t even a matter of your own control, life forced your hand by dealing you with circumstances or struggles that kept you from where you were hoping to go. You had to close the business because of a global pandemic, or you said no to your passion project to pursue the responsible path of financial stability.
“You know the steps that leave you wondering, ‘If I would have just…. [fill in the blank] maybe my life would be different.’”In many ways, today’s guest’s story should have been finished even before it started. In the throes of a family history of mental health struggles and addiction, one man’s decision to make a change in his life marked their lives for eternity.
They are legacy bearers and advocates of faith and family and that is why I couldn’t be more excited to be joined by Willie and Korie Robertson for today’s episode of The Mary Marantz Show.

For many of the formative years of Phil Robertson’s life, shame and embarrassment followed him. Growing up in a small town, there was no outrunning the reality of his mother’s mental health struggles and the poverty of their family. From the outside looking in, it was easy to characterize who he was but no one truly knew the turmoil he carried within him. As Willie said of his father’s early life…
“When he became a star athlete, he became popular and he always felt like, oh, now you like me yet you made fun of me in high school. He always had that war inside him, that questioning of people that became part of his anger and rage. It doesn’t excuse the terrible behavior but you do start to have empathy because you can see that his life wasn’t all laid out, his parents weren’t necessarily there and he had to take on a lot.”
Over the next few years, Phil would face a harrowing journey trying to reconcile who he had become and who he was made to be.
With a wife and growing family, this was no longer just a choice for himself but for the generations that would come to follow…
“The narrative of the world will tell you people won’t change, that whatever they are that is how they are going to be but it is actually false because with Jesus you can change and Phil is perfect evidence of that.” –Korie
[image error]
“Once Phil and Kay put their lives in Jesus, everything went through that lens and I can remember Phil reading the stories of Saul or Peter and saying, ‘Yes, I am reading about flawed people who did great things for God and I can become something great for God even though I am flawed as well.’” -Willie
Early on Phil’s sister said, if you bring Phil to Jesus, he will bring thousands and in fact, through the redeeming hand of God, the hardest parts of Phil’s life was not his undoing but rather the pathway to the bigger plans that God had for him.
If you feel like you cannot move beyond your past or that the vision for your life has been deferred, this conversation is for you! Join Willie, Korie, and I as we dive into the healing that can come through storytelling and what it really means to experience freedom in Christ.
Tune into today’s episode to hear:
Why we need to be curious about other’s stories
The saving power of the blood of Christ
How our muddiest stories can become foundations for generations to come
The reality is, even in all we have experienced, we only have a finite view of our lives.
We are indeed the sum of our surroundings and our decisions, but if we still have life to live our story is never truly over.
So friend, don’t lose yourself in what is missing or what could have been but live into the unfinished possibility of your life.
May this episode be your reminder: “No matter where you have been and where you are going, your story will never be wasted.”

EP. 178: What to Do When the Journey Gets Hard with Ruth Chou Simons
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Are you preoccupied with the pursuit of your next goal? Do you feel a sense of urgency to be further along in your journey than you are?
The horizon line presents as a clear fixed point that with just the right amount of will and stamina can be reached. We define the route, build up our strength and with ruthless conviction set our sights on the finish line.
Painstakingly we put one foot in front of the other with intention and purpose taking on whatever crosses our path along the way. Yet somehow the journey becomes longer or isn’t quite as direct.
“And the more we push ourselves to grasp our goals, the more they seem to vanish beyond our reach.”Despite our best efforts, our plan fails and the destination that promised to be the answer to the ache in our souls eludes us still.
I only have this amount of time to …
I should be at this point in my business already …
If I could just cross this threshold then I would be on track…
To fall short is to fall behind and so amidst our disappointment and disillusionment, we quickly scramble to find the next point to fix our gaze upon. Because if we don’t have a point to chase after what is really tethering us down?
With an art degree in hand, today’s guest had dreams she longed to see come true. If she could have snapped her fingers at the time, she would have loved her world to explode with opportunity, to see her art in galleries or people buying her work. But as life often does, her course changed over time and she nestled the dream deep, resolving that its fullest form would be realized only in the quiet, hidden parts of her life. What she never could have anticipated though was that what she thought was deferred was actually blossoming and building as she was faithful to the path right in front of her.
She is a kindred spirit, curator of beauty and a well of wisdom in being present to the whisper of God in our every moment. That is why I am so excited to be joined by Ruth Chou Simons again on today’s episode of The Mary Marantz Show.
Ruth Chou Simons is a Wall Street Journal bestselling and award-winning author of several books and Bible studies, including Pilgrim, GraceLaced, Beholding and Becoming, and When Strivings Cease. She is an artist, entrepreneur, podcaster, and speaker, using each of these platforms to spiritually sow the Word of God into people’s hearts. Through social media, her online shoppe at GraceLaced.com, and the GraceLaced Collective community, Simons shares her journey of God’s grace intersecting daily life with word and art. Ruth and her husband, Troy, are grateful parents to six boys—their greatest adventure.

After almost ten years of stewarding her company, Ruth was ready to step into the next season. In her mind, it was time to entrust her business to someone else and move to the next level of her life and career. But no matter how much time or effort she spent focusing on achieving that goal she continued to see it not come to fruition.
“When we do life’s journey without Jesus, we will always find ourselves restless. We will hope in vain that once we get over that next hill beyond the horizon or reach the peak we will finally feel accomplished and satisfied. But the thrill we are waiting for will never come because apart from Jesus… it can’t.”
The fundamental desire was not a bad one as she was gifted and called for this work but it was what she was chasing within the goal that would either lead her away from Jesus or lead her to Him.
Getting to the next level was less about the timeline of the business and more about the timeline she held against herself…
“What we are really after is the sense that we didn’t waste our life and that we matter. That the time and effort we have put in and the hard things we have navigated through weren’t wasted. And if we really get down to it we are actually chasing the peace to know that God is going to be pleased with what we’ve done”
As she sat with the reality of her disappointment, she began to see that what felt like a dead end was actually a grace-filled guidepost giving a greater sense of direction to her life. It was the mercy of God to see her goal unsatisfied because instead of being stuck in a race defined by someone else, she could freely run the race designed for her.
So whether chasing your dream is costing you your presence or you are feeling the pressure to be somewhere you aren’t, this episode is the reset you need to be right where you are.
Join Ruth and me as we discuss how to draw near to the heart of God on the journey of life and the beauty of being faithful right where you are with what you have.
Tune in to hear:
Why we are made to not feel at home here
What the principles of offroading can teach us about the presence of God
The difference between waiting with God versus for God
This episode is a breath of fresh air and a reminder to take a step back and open our eyes to the place we hold in a story that has already been in motion since the beginning of time.
Just as we are wired to chase things that matter we have already been given a life of purpose and worth beyond what we do or accomplish.
So, friend, take a deep breath because no matter the point in your story you are held.
May this episode be your reminder: “You don’t have to save yourself, He has got you.”

EP. 177: Why You Are More Than You’ve Been Told with Hosanna Wong
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Are you weighed down, exhausted, and overwhelmed by your daily life?
Do you feel disconnected from yourself and God?
We never mean to get to this place because the truth is, what we are doing is important. The roles and responsibilities we take on are pivotal to our livelihood and in fact, are what we have been called to steward to impact this world.
“But slowly over time, the days begin to blur together and we find ourselves in a rinse and repeat cycle of life.”Amongst it all, there is the person of confidence and clarity we hope to be…
…..and there is the girl in the mirror.
Daily she carries the experiences of our past, the narrative of our present, and the longings of our future and whether we want to acknowledge it or not, she is vying for our attention.
Left unchecked, the constant doing and performing become an unending cycle of pouring ourselves out for the affirmation of others, the benchmark of success by society, or the expectations we have of ourselves all in hopes of finally silencing the nagging sense of what we fear most:
Being unworthy, unseen, or unwanted.
To stop and give in would mean losing ground on the painstaking proof we have built up against those fears being true, rendering us defenseless against the labels that still haunt us. But according to today’s guest, our identity was never ours to define.
During a season of loss, Hosanna felt stuck. The things that she had built her life on that she believed would last suddenly were crumbling down. And though she wasn’t at rock bottom, she did not feel like herself. Deep within she knew there was more that was eluding her, but it seemed impossible to pinpoint her discontentment when she didn’t even know who she was anymore.
She is an overcomer, a gifted voice, and a humble guide on the path of what it means to walk in our God-given identity and that is why I am so honored to be joined once again by my friend Hosanna Wong on today’s episode of The Mary Marantz Show.
Hosanna Wong is an international speaker, best-selling author and spoken word artist helping everyday people know Jesus for real. Widely known for her spoken word piece, Hosanna shares in churches, conferences, prisons, and other events around the world, reaching across various denominations, backgrounds and cultures.
Born and raised in an urban ministry on the streets of San Francisco, Hosanna later packed her life into suitcases and traveled to churches and other ministries throughout the United States to share about Jesus through spoken word poetry. During those years without a permanent home, she began speaking and creating resources to serve the local and global Church.
Hosanna currently travels and speaks year-round, and serves on teaching teams at churches throughout the United States. Hosanna is the best-selling author of How (Not) to Save the World. Her new book, You Are More Than You’ve Been Told is available now!

The hard truth was this was not the first time Hosanna had experienced an identity crisis. She had come to recognize the negative ways she had sought lesser things to give her worth in her past. But now, with a marriage and life she loved, she found herself clinging too tightly to what she had been entrusted.
“It was good things that had become God things. I was finding my identity in a lot of good things that I could not stop because otherwise I would lose who I am and I would lose my sense of worth. And it became a line-in-the-sand moment for me because I was doing the things God was calling me to do but not in the way he had called me to do them. ”
As the pressure grew to continue to excel, remnants of her past began resurfacing and the same lies began echoing through her mind again. Regardless of the work she had already done to reconcile her identity, she knew she had to revisit the root of her pain if she was going to reset the rhythms of her life.
It all led her to a hard realization:
“Because I grew up hearing that others believed that my family was wrong and different, I believed I was wrong and different…
“Therefore, it was then that I believed the lie that I was unworthy of love without doing something. I quickly learned that I had to do more, change myself, and work harder to be loved, for someone to stay with me and for me to have value.”
Through a brutally honest conversation with close friends and a renewed sense of focus, Hosanna decided she would not let the enemy keep her down any longer. TODAY was the day she would get up and fight.
If you feel stuck in your patterns of thinking or defined by what you offer versus who you are, this episode is for you!
Join Hosanna and me as we discuss what reconciling her story taught her about herself and why we can only be defined by the One who created us.
Tune in to hear:
What we can learn from David’s journey to fight Goliath
The four rhythms we need to sustain our daily lives
Why the fight for our lives begins with our schedules
As Hosanna shares, an identity crisis is never something we would intentionally seek out but there is complete intention in us reaching the end of ourselves. You are not crazy in feeling lost or confused. You have just been told lies your whole life and now is the time to recover what is actually true.
Today is the day you stop seeing yourself through the broken lens of others and through the eye of your Creator.
May this episode be your reminder: “Friend, you are more than you’ve been told.”

EP. 176: Tired of Trying (Hold on When It’s Hard) with Ashley Morgan Jackson
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Do you feel stuck and isolated in the season you are in?
Are you tired of trying to make things happen in your own strength or figuring out what God is up to?
In a fast-paced culture that specializes in maximizing productivity and optimizing output, disruptions are to be avoided.
“We have ourselves conditioned to produce more and more, and to pull up our bootstraps when the going gets tough to find a solution. ”Whatever it takes, we have to keep moving forward. Isn’t that what the age-old adage promised? If you don’t succeed, try, try again.
But what do we do when the weeks turn to months and months to years without release?
It’s as if to say, finally, at some point our effort and control should get us beyond the obstacle in our way, but the truth is, we don’t have as much power as we would like to believe.
Tragedy comes close, mental health problems intensify, a pandemic shuts down the world and in an instant, we are reminded…we have limitations. Despite our best efforts, there is no way around our circumstances and we are left wondering: Will it feel like this forever?
Married with a new baby, today’s guest felt like she was living a completely different life. The roles she had come to identify with had suddenly shifted and now stripped of what had defined her she didn’t know who she was. Where was the girl she once knew?
As the image she created crumbled to the ground she began to see that what she thought she was losing was actually leading her into truly discovering herself.
That is why I am honored to be joined by Ashley Morgan Jackson on today’s episode of The Mary Marantz Show to talk about her brand new book Tired of Trying: How to Hold On to God When You’re Frustrated, Fed Up, and Feeling Forgotten.
Ashley Morgan Jackson is an author, speaker, and social media expert. She works full-time for Proverbs 31 Ministries and has ministered to her own online community for over ten years. She is passionate about women learning to let go of the lie that they have to perform for God’s love and instead realizing that they can receive His love, just as they are. Ashley is a wife of fourteen years to her wonderful husband, Daniel, and a mom to two growing boys. The family lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. If you asked Ashley what her favorite thing to do is, she would say it’s laughing till it hurts!

“Just be stronger.
Read more books
Just work harder, you can fix yourself.
Just hurry up, your brokenness is an inconvenience.”
Like a ticker tape through Ashley’s mind, came the shame and judgment from within. She couldn’t hold it together any longer and yet her mind felt like her enemy. No matter how hard she tried she couldn’t outrun it and she longed for anything to get her beyond this place.
With nowhere else to turn, she faced a hard realization…
“I told myself I didn’t care about anything, but the truth was I did care, alot. I cared deeply and obsessively about what everyone thought of me, even strangers. I cared about whether I mattered, why I felt so rejected, and why my mind felt like it was broken. Most of all, I cared about why God had left me to deal with all of this alone.”
In her frustration and anger, she knew she had two choices. She could either run away, distract herself and continue white-knuckling her way through life or she could run toward the only One who could ever define her.
Little did she know though, that what she thought was a call to release her grip was actually an invitation to grab on tighter…to God. This wouldn’t be solved by just being near to Him, it was time to do the hard but worthy work of wrestling through the pain with Him.
Join Ashley and me as we discuss the dangers of defining our own identity and how our frustrations can help reveal our core pain.
On today’s episode you will hear:
How letting go leads us back to ourselves
What we can learn from Jacob’s wrestle with God
Why today’s honesty can be a catalyst for generations to come
Whether you feel like your pain has stolen the best of who you are – or you are just over being stuck in the season you are in – this episode is a must listen.
Even though it feels like you are far from seeing that light at the end of the tunnel friend, don’t let go.
May this episode be your reminder: “What if this disruption is not an interruption but an invitation to rediscover who you were made to be?”

EP. 175: Why Loneliness is Killing Us with Justin Whitmel Earley
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Do you feel like you don’t belong in the community in which you once felt at home?
Perhaps, you found your people and developed friendships you thought would last a lifetime and yet, the season changed, a pandemic happened, they moved away or the relationship evolved.
Just like that, back to square one.
Finding, building, and sustaining friends has never been easy but it feels like it only becomes more complicated as adults.
“Let’s just be honest, friendship can be frustrating.”Relationships are nuanced and between the ever-changing demands of daily life, family, and a culture that prioritizes norms of artificial connection, cultivating authentic friendship can seem more like the alternate reality.
It is a perpetuated illusion that we have more accessibility and connectedness at our fingertips but the truth behind the screen is that we are far more isolated and alone than ever before. We have become accustomed to the convenience of scrolling someone’s feed and liking their photos but there is a monumental difference in being seen and being known.
As the new kid in his high school, feeling like an outsider in his environment, it only took one question to set today’s guest’s life on a different trajectory.
An act of vulnerability laid the groundwork for a life changing perspective on the value of community and a passion for breaking barriers of connection and that is why I am so excited to be joined by my new friend, Justin Whitmel Earley on today’s episode of The Mary Marantz Show.
Justin Whitmel Earley is a writer, speaker, and lawyer. He is the author of the award-winning books Habits of the Household and The Common Rule, though he spends most days running his business law practice. Through his writing and speaking, Justin empowers God’s people to thrive through life-giving habits that form them in the love of God and neighbor. His latest book, Made for People, delves deep into the profound impact of friendship and offers transformative strategies to combat loneliness. He lives with his wife and four boys in Richmond, Virginia, and spends a lot of time around fires and porches with friends.

For Justin, when he found himself suffering alone, the world seemed to slowly close in around him and make him believe hope was dwindling but he innately knew he was created for so much more.
“It sounds blasphemous but it is not, you and God are not enough. In His generosity, God made us to need community and as communal creatures we cannot experience Him in the way that we were made to until we experience Him alongside others. God Himself said it was NOT GOOD for us to be alone.”
In his darkest moments it was in fact the light of a different perspective and the companionship of another traveler on the road that the the Lord ultimately used to remind Justin of the hope and the future that had always been set before him.
That was when this powerful defintion of integrity, taken from the word INTEGER (meaningin whole) hit him…
“What happens in loneliness is you become fractured inside, your soul is not right and you are not well because you were made for people. There is a wholeness, integrity and non-fractured nature to our life when we live it amongst friends.”

So, whether you are looking for ways to build new friendships or practical ways to strengthen the foundation you have laid, today’s episode will be one you will return to again and again. Join Justin and I as we discuss the epidemic of loneliness and the reason why friendship is a spiritual discipline.
Tune in to hear:
What two rhythms you need to start putting into practice in your relationships
How to show and not tell about our lives
The three principles of building covenant friendships
If you find yourself in a season of loneliness or living a life in which you just feel on your own, hear me when I say though it may not feel true in this moment you are fully known and fully loved.
Covenant community is in reach but as Justin reminds us, what we are truly longing for often lies just beyond the intersection of risk, vulnerability and a little bit of awkwardness.
So take the first step, you already have the line…
“Do you want to be best friends? “

EP. 174: How to Stop Fearing What Other People Think with Natalie Franke
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW When did you first become aware of how others perceived you?
Was it a mistake in a school presentation that drew unwanted attention, the rejection from the role that was on the top of your list? Or maybe, like me, it was a critical response to a tender dream you shared in its infancy.
Even today, years down the road, it amazes me the acute awareness we can readily access those memories.
“Though fleeting and forgettable for those who were around us, those moments leave their mark and over time become the evidence we use to justify our fears.”And even though we may experience the love, belonging, and acceptance we long for, those perceptions lie dormant waiting to remind us why it will always be better to stay comfortable than come alive.
What do I know about leading? Who I am to chase this dream? I have no idea how to build a business….
Our default mode is to prepare and protect ourselves from the fallout on the other side of the risk, but instead, we ultimately hold ourselves hostage from our future by defining ourselves in the past.
When today’s guest deviated from the path set before her no one could have prepared her for the unashamed opinions that would be thrown her way. For most of her life, the perception of others had played a part in her daily experience but this was growing to a new scale. She had become familiar with the fear but what she would have to befriend was what was rooted beneath it.
She is a trailblazer, tenacious entrepreneur, and gutsy leader and that is why I am thrilled to have my dear friend Natalie Franke back for a THIRD time on The Mary Marantz Show.
Natalie Franke is a writer, entrepreneur, community builder, neuroscience nerd, podcaster, and mama bear for small businesses. She is also the Chief Evangelist at HoneyBook where she champions a community of over 100,000 independent business owners. From navigating a benign brain tumor diagnosis to undergoing neurosurgery, to battling infertility for years–Natalie has faced her fears time and time again. Her lived experiences have shaped her understanding of courage and inspired her to write her new book, Gutsy: Learning to Live with Bold, Brave, and Boundless Courage, from a place of true vulnerability. Gutsy is a roadmap to life brimming with curiosity, confidence, and fulfillment that ultimately offers the hope that embracing how you feel about yourself matters more than how others feel about you.

Out of a dream she had for herself and her community, Natalie found herself leading a rapidly expanding community of independent business owners. The more her impact rippled out into the world the more eyes were not only on her work but her life and she began to notice that the perceptions of others were clouding her own sense of direction.
Whether or not she was taking action or staying silent there was always some angle within herself or with the proverbial world around her that wouldn’t be satisfied.
Spinning her wheels and spending increasingly more time and energy fixated on the opinion of the others in her life she knew she had to take a step back.
“People tend to believe they make up their own mind but when you look at the neuroscience of it, we tend to make up an opinion based on a summation of the opinions that surround us…
“We don’t often go through the world looking for the truth. We go through the world looking for evidence that what we already believe to be true is the truth.”
Whatever you look for you will find and if she looked hard enough, she would always be able to access perceptions and opinions that could validate her fear. So the only place she could ever find the answers to the questions she so deeply longed for would have to be within herself.
“You have to be able to differentiate the risks that are truly there for where people’s opinions matter and when they don’t. What is hardwired in, is hardwired in. It’s a feature, not a bug. It’s not an accident that you think this way, it’s not something that is broken about you or wrong with you in any way, it is there to keep you safe and protect you from things that can harm you. Once you embrace and accept that, then we get to do the work of evaluating what will help you move forward and be courageous.”
The honest truth was, she would likely never stop caring what other people thought but she was finally finished with it limiting her from the life she longed for.
If you feel stuck in your comfort zone or stagnant in indecision, this episode is a must-listen! In today’s episode, Natalie pulls back the curtain on the inner work that helped her lean into a gutsy life and the necessity of just doing the thing scared.
Tune into today’s episode to hear:
What your jealousy can teach youWhy you need to audit your inner circleThe two definitions you have to write yourself
The third time is the charm for Natalie and she continues to leave me wanting more. I have no doubt that her dedication to the hard work of self-reflection and evaluation will be a catalyst for you today.
Consider today’s episode the push you have been waiting for to step beyond the limitations of your past into the gutsy life only you can live.
“Go ahead, make yourself proud.”
I can’t wait for you to take a listen! And if you are looking to give up comparing, performing, and achieving for your worth, I think you’ll LOVE my new book Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots! EP. 173: How to Hear God’s Voice in Your Life with Brittany Bruce
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Are you struggling to hear God’s voice in your life? Do you feel like you have been distant for too long or that discerning His voice is just for theologians and pastors?
The voice of God is one of the greatest, most intimate gifts we have been given and yet it is often one of the hardest mysteries to unravel. Internal narratives like:
Is this thought my own?
Are my emotions drawing me in that direction or is He leading me?
Is the enemy trying to set me off course?
It can bring a lot of confusion.
In today’s world of communication, it feels like it would be so much easier if the still, small voice was delivered to our inbox.
“But what if learning His voice is less about strengthening our own ability to hear the answers and more about practicing the discipline of being in relationship with Him?”At a time when so many things are vying for our attention, Brittany Bruce carries a challenging testimony of what it means to live with intention and lean into the Voice leading you. That is why I can’t wait for you to hear her story on today’s episode of The Mary Marantz Show.
Brittany Bruce is a believer, wife, mom to four, educator, and host of The Brittany Bruce Show.
Faith is the cornerstone of her life and business and she loves digging into the Word to uncover mind-blowing discoveries about her Lord and Savior, Jesus. As the founder of Brittany Bruce Education, Brittany provides a space for women to grow in their understanding of the Word and be rooted in a community that helps them discover their God-given calling. Her hope is that as women embrace and apply the Scriptures that they will experience greater freedom not only in their lives but in their business.

Just as Brittany and her family started their summer vacation at their new condo, the call came in that their business had just hit seven figures. They were at the peak of success, living their dream life and yet, as she sat beside her husband celebrating, she realized this wasn’t actually what she truly wanted.
“What I thought would be the feeling of ‘we’ve made it, everything that we have worked for in the last five years is here and has happened’ was instead a feeling of ‘now what?’ Hours later as I was sitting up in bed I just kept thinking…
God, what is next? I’ve done everything I have worked hard to do, I have accomplished all these things, we’ve built our dream house, and this beautiful life, now what?
“And immediately in my spirit, I heard Him say ‘let it go.’ That was one of the first times I heard the whisper from God in a way that was indescribable, inescapable, and undeniable.”
To let it all go felt like she was being stripped down to the core.
Who was she if her appearance didn’t include success and having it all together? What would people think of her if she let it all go after all the work it took to get here?
She knew deep down what she needed to do, but it would take months of trying to logically make sense of the sacrifice before she surrendered. As she doubled down on her faith and stepped out in trust she started to notice a series of ways God was working, speaking, and moving in her life.
If you want to grow in your understanding of how God speaks to you or are longing for guidance on how to quiet the noise of life and amplify His whisper – this episode is for you.
Join Brittany and me as we discuss the temptation of ‘doing’ over ‘being’ and three principles to guide your time with God.
On today’s episode, you will hear:
The four ways God speaks to us
Why we shouldn’t rely solely on open and closed doors as our “signs”
What Brittany learned from her kids and a plate of chocolate chip cookies
It is not a matter of if God is speaking but how He is trying to connect with us moment by moment and in a world that demands our attention, His is the only Voice that patiently waits to be heard.
May this episode be your reminder: “What would it take for you to make space for His whisper today? “
I can’t wait for you to take a listen! And if you are looking to give up comparing, performing, and achieving for your worth, I think you’ll LOVE my new book Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots! EP. 171: The 3 Limiting Money Beliefs to Let Go Of Now with Chelsey & Stephen
APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW Do you ever feel like despite all your hard work you are still struggling to make ends meet?
Are you stuck in the land of just enough wishing you could find a way out of the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck?
Financial freedom can often feel like the gateway to the life we dream of and the lack of it, the gatekeeper holding us back from what we long for. But, beyond money being the means by which we can live our lives, it is also highly personal.
“There are few more powerful ways to get a picture of someone’s soul than through the lens of money.”So much of how we think and interact with it is directly related to the fears and experiences we have had of it from an early age. Maybe, like me, you observed that to have something worthwhile meant it had to be struggled for or, perhaps you felt the longing to be included as you wore the hand-me-downs alongside your classmates with the trendy clothes.
If we are honest, the resource itself doesn’t drive our decision-making as much as the feeling tied to it does. It can be a motivator and a master but what if it could be a tool for freedom not only in our lives but the lives of those around us?
This question is what fueled today’s guests to push the boundaries on what they thought was possible in their lives and now is the hope they have to offer others as they share their story of God’s provision. That is why I am thrilled to be joined by my dear friends, Stephen and Chelsey Diaz on today’s episode of The Mary Marantz Show.
Stephen and Chelsey are photographers, podcasters, coaches, entrepreneurs and the founding partnership behind The Rainmaker Family, a movement of Moms on mission to secure their families financial future. Focused on e-commerce and digital products, they coach families through how to create their own brands, manage manufacturing, and then leverage one of the #1 largest opportunities to sell products online, Amazon FBA. They are passionate about encouraging and empowering two key things through their work, family and finances. Because they believe that deeper connections and financial freedom can enable others to step more into their why and ultimately build a successful business that doesn’t have to be at the cost of their family.

If I don’t provide for myself no one will come and rescue me.
I am the provider and I have to hustle for what I have.
It took years for Chelsey and Stephen to realize that these two beliefs were the initial fuel behind their entrepreneurial drive. And for a while it worked, as their hard work translated into scaled growth and success. They had accomplished the thing and made their vision a reality and yet the pressure and weight of it all began bearing down on them.
As Stephen put it…
“During that season, I saw this vision of me with super strong arms holding up something but with really weak legs and it was God’s way of challenging me in the fact that I was trying to be the provider. I thought I was being strong, but it was built on a weak foundation- my own provision. He was speaking to me and saying, ‘The reason you are stressed, the reason you are overworked and overwhelmed is because you are trying to step into something I am going to do for you. I alone am your provider.’”
Like so many of us, what they could do slowly shifted into the belief that they must be the ones to accomplish it. And rather than living into the possibilities in front of them, they were stuck repeating and reacting to the ruts of beliefs that had formed over time.
What Chelsey and Stephen would experience next, was a string of events that would work to dismantle the limiting beliefs in their lives and open them to the limitless economy of the Kingdom.
Join Stephen, Chelsey and I as we discuss strategies we can use to flip the narrative money has over our lives and the three limiting beliefs to let go of today.
Tune in to hear:
How to shift your perspective from scarcity to abundance
The importance of identifying the ‘why’ beneath your financial goals
How moving from “I Can’t” to “How Can I?” changes everythingWhy desperation is the enemy of creation
Your next action plan to change your money mindset forever
This episode is challenging and thought provoking but as Stephen shares, the truth is in the tension. It is in our willingness to be honest about where we are and where we hope to be that we can name what is actually holding us back, ourselves.
May this episode be your reminder: “If the words you speak become your thoughts become your beliefs become your actions become your future… what do you want to say next?”
I can’t wait for you to take a listen! And if you are looking to give up comparing, performing, and achieving for your worth, I think you’ll LOVE my new book Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots!
