By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Did you know that according to LA Times, the average American household has over 300,000 items in it?

That’s a lot of stuff!

And did you know that at least 10% of American households also rent a storage unit for extra stuff they can’t fit into their house at a cost of about $ 1,200 a year?

That’s a lot of money!

And did you know that 75% of American households engage in at least one home decluttering project in 2022?

That’s a lot of people who want to declutter!

What does that say about…

Our desire to take back control of our homes and our lives that are overrun with too much stuff? Our desire to live a simpler, less cluttered life with less stuff, less stress, and less guilt so we can have more life .

That’s why you’re here and that’s why I’m here. I’m inviting you to get started on a 12-month decluttering journey that will change your life.

“It’s impossible,” and that you are the only one whose house is always cluttered, and you can’t find what you need when you need it.

Not true!

Or you might be thinking…

You’re one of those people who just can’t seem to “get it together”, while all the other people are just naturally organized and already know how to live clutter-free!

Also, not true!

Bottom line. You’re not alone!

There are many others out there just like you who want to declutter, but have tried and failed many times. But this time you are driven to succeed!

As a matter of fact, one of the top 3 New Year’s resolutions is to declutter the home. Perhaps that’s why you’re reading this.

Many people just like you are tired of being stressed out by all the clutter in their homes. They’re tired of being overwhelmed by the enormity of the project they face. And they’re tired of the many ways clutter is impacting their lives… their health and well-being, their relationship and family life, their productivity, and their ability to focus.

2. Stop resisting!

Prioritize decluttering. Put it on your calendar. Just do it!

3. Focus!

On one room, one area, and one shelf at a time.

And for sure, you should expect a few bumps along the way! You will likely experience…

1.   Powerful emotionsTears, upset, frustration2.   Negative self-talk“I’ll never be able to do this.”3.   Pushback from family and friendsNot everyone will be as committed as you to decluttering.

This is your decluttering project… not theirs!

Once you accept this 12-Month Decluttering Challenge, once you start to do the work and see progress, you will see your life changing right before your eyes month after month.

Is Decluttering A Form Of Self-Care?

Is The Clutter In Your Home Overwhelming You?

Let’s face it – no one likes a cluttered home. Even if you find yourself frustrated with the clutter in your home, though, you may not know what to do about it. Sure, you’ve heard of decluttering – but how does one even declutter? How do you get started decluttering? How do you stay motivated to declutter?

Hi, it’s Rita here. I know getting started decluttering can seem impossible. That first step seems just too big to take. The good news is you don’t have to get started on your own. The Downsizing Designer is here to help you get started decluttering and stay motivated decluttering.

Do I Really Need To Declutter My Home?

Motivation and getting started sometimes go hand in hand. If you’re used to living with your clutter, you may wonder if it’s even worth it to get started. The truth is it will always be worth it. Why? Because decluttering is self-care.

How Decluttering Is Self-Care

Decluttering can not only help to alleviate stress and anxiety – but it also helps create a sense of order and calm in your environment. You don’t have to live with the background stress clutter produces. You can create the environment you want to live in by de-cluttering.

Decluttering also helps you on a physical level. Cluttered homes are difficult to navigate. You likely have trouble finding the items you actually need daily in the clutter. A cluttered home is also more difficult to keep clean. By decluttering, you make it easier for yourself to get around, to get what you need, and to get rid of harmful dust and allergens.

Are You Ready To Get Started Decluttering?

If you’re ready to try decluttering as self-care, I have just what you need to get started. This Decluttering Quick-Start Bundle has a wide range of materials to help you get started decluttering and stay motivated as you declutter. It includes 1 online course, 2 workbooks, 1 ebook, and 2 checklists. Learn about decluttering at your own pace and get a quick start so you can enjoy life after decluttering.

Moving in Your 60’s: Tips to Ease the Move

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Preparing for a big move is never easy, but doing so later in life can feel almost impossible. With stressors coming from every angle, it can be tempting to stay put as you get older. But, if you’re ready to move and enter the next chapter of your life then don’t let potential moving anxiety stop you.

Instead, read on for helpful tips and tricks to help ease and eliminate stress to prepare yourself for your big move!

Organize Your Finances

Before you start planning your move, hone in on your financial situation to help you better understand what services you can benefit from. Organizing your finances can feel overwhelming, especially if you have no experience, but it will save you from headaches in the long run. There are many helpful tools online from budget calculators to budget calendars that will provide you with a visual insight into your finances. Knowledge is financial power. Make it a priority to understand how much you have coming in and out, especially if you want to relocate. The home-buying process can take as little as two weeks, so it’s essential to take your time beforehand and create a financial plan that will make the transition feel seamless.

Start by creating a budget that gives you a rough estimate of how much house you can afford based on your monthly income. Getting a rough estimate will ease some of the financial uncertainties of buying a home and make sure you are making an investment that works for your budget. For additional confirmation that you’re looking at homes within your price range, start with a mortgage pre-approval online tool. This will give you a better understanding of how much money you can borrow for your new house. Once you’re pre-approved, the house-hunting process will be easier for you and your real estate agent. Understanding how much house you can afford will give you the ability to make smarter decisions during this transitional period of your life.

Plan Ahead

Don’t let the daunting task of moving sneak up on you. Life can get hectic, and moving can add another layer of stress. By starting your planning well in advance, you’ll be able to minimize any unexpected issues. If you have lived in your house for twenty-plus years, the idea of moving can seem impossible. Take things slow and give yourself plenty of time to go through all of your belongings and figure out an effective plan that will allow you to handle any hurdles ahead of time.

There are easy, pre-moving planning steps you can take to help set yourself up for success during your move. For starters, try to mentally plan the layout of your new rooms while packing the old ones for an easier transition into the new home. Make a list of moving tasks and crucial deadlines, and take inventory of important furniture or pieces to be mindful of during the move. Ask for the floor plan of your new place to better familiarize yourself with the layout. This way you will know how much space you have and what you might want to sell or buy. You can’t plan every aspect of your moving day ahead, however, it can help with any relocation anxiety and make the process easier for you in the long run.

Take Care of The Small Stuff

Before you can make your big move make sure you’re taking the time to tighten up any loose ends, like forwarding your mail and updating your bills to your new address. This is an ideal time to finally go through any subscriptions or memberships you have held onto for too long and cancel them. If you’re not too sure how to redirect your mail then visit your local post office and request a Mover’s Guide Packet. This packet will provide you with all the necessary documents and forms free of charge.

Now that you have your mail covered make sure you are also sorting your medications by transferring any prescriptions to the appropriate address. If you’re looking to switch pharmacies then call the new pharmacy to request an RX transfer and provide them with all the necessary information like medications and current pharmacy information. The new pharmacy will handle the process from there. Doing these things in advance will help you feel more organized and prepared when in the process of moving.

Consider Downsizing

Whether you’re looking to downsize the size of your home or simply just want to reduce the clutter, relocating to a new home is the ideal option for you. Downsizing both the size of your home and possessions is a great way to cut down on the time you spend on maintenance and upkeep while also lowering your bills. Now, if you’re still on the fence about downsizing your home but are not sure if it’s for you, then consider if your current home is appropriate for your health. For example, some aging adults might find stairs challenging and a safety hazard, so they might look into single-story homes that are suitable to their needs and mobility.

Downsizing your home is one thing but downsizing your possessions is quite another. It can be challenging for any adult to part with memories they have collected over the years, from your children’s artwork to old furniture that holds sentimental value to you. Start by separating the things that hold real value to you from the things you don’t need to combat the clutter. If you haven’t worn that blouse in a while or haven’t looked through your junk drawer in years, then it’s time to part ways with these items. Give your furniture and clothes a second life by donating them. Remember, downsizing doesn’t mean you are getting rid of memories, but simply making room for new ones.

Ask For Help

If you’re finding it hard to get organized and prepared for the actual moving day then consider investing in movers or asking your loved ones for help to lessen the load. Although movers can be costly, they can be a huge investment for those with no help, limited transportation, or those with physical disabilities. Don’t risk getting hurt or injured to save money and consider senior moving services that can handle most of the move for you.

If hiring help is not in the cards for you, consider cost-friendly alternatives that may be beneficial to you. If you’ve already rented a truck then consider hiring professionals that specialize in labor-only moving jobs, and will handle your stuff with care. However, if you have enlisted your family members to help them consider creating a moving schedule to help space out the move and give everyone direction on what they need to help with. Don’t be afraid to ask your friends and family to come before the move to plan out the day and get any of your last-minute tasks done. Asking for additional help can be daunting, but will save you a headache at the end of the day.

Remember Your Resources

If you’re still not feeling confident in the overall move then remember to look into resources that can be beneficial for you. If you’re a member of the AARP, there are many advantages that can help ease some of the financial stress that comes with moving like 10%-20% off of moving truck rentals or a discount on moving services. Other resources like Move For Seniors can not only help with the actual move but also with donating or decluttering your move as they provide free consultations to get you started.

Although there are many great resources available for aging adults, make sure you watch out for scammers. Always take precautions if you are hiring movers and exchanging money. Spend time reading through reviews and recommendations. Thoroughly read through any forms or contracts they ask you to sign, and if possible, pay with a credit card as you can dispute any unnecessary charges if necessary. If you start to feel overwhelmed looking for the right movers then lean on your resources!

Take It One Room at a Time

Now that you have moved in, you can officially breathe a sigh of relief and start the real work; unpacking. It might be tempting to get organized and unpack every box right away, however, take it one room at a time. You also want to make sure you have taken the time to check the inventory list you made before the move. You have plenty of time to get situated, so don’t rush to get it down overnight. Take baby steps by starting with small rooms like bathrooms or unboxing the things you need for your daily routine.

Going from room to room will help you physically see progress and give you a better idea of how you want to revamp or redecorate the rooms with a clearer mindset. Unpacking your kitchen might be more important than getting your guest room ready, it all depends on your timeline Remember the key is to focus on unpacking what you need to function and go from there.

No matter how prepared you are, there will always be moments of anxiety and stress when moving. Don’t worry if anything doesn’t go as planned because one way or another, you’ll get to the finish line. What’s most important is that you try to organize yourself ahead of time to help manage those curveballs. Moving into a new home and starting a new chapter is an exciting time, so don’t let the moving process ruin the experience!

How To Create Your Own Minimalist Home and Mindset

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Words are powerful.

If we tell ourselves, we can do something, we can. Conversely, if we tell ourselves, we can’t do something, we probably can’t.

When it comes to decluttering, your home, I often hear, “I can’t possibly get rid of XYZ… (mom’s, china, my kids, artwork, their high school trophies)”

And… when I mention the word minimalism, it is often construed as deprivation for getting rid of all the things you love.

Not so.

In fact, decluttering and minimalism are about simplifying and minimizing things that get in the way of living a richer, more abundant life.

As you’ve probably experienced yourself, too much clutter in your home, can cause you to feel anxious, overwhelmed, and exhausted. it impacts the quality of your life in so many ways.

You can’t find what you need when you need it and that’s frustrating.Your “to-do” list never ends there’s always something! You waste way too much time, and energy, on cleaning, organizing, and re-organizing your stuff.

When you think of it…

You go to work to earn money so you can go buy stuff. You take that stuff home and then you have to manage it, clean it, organize it, look for it, and repair it.

Buying more “stuff” contributes to that vicious cycle.

When you choose to live a simpler life with less stuff

You have less to do, to clean, organize, and manage. You have more white space on your calendar so your “to-do” list is shorter. You have more time, energy, and freedom to focus on what matters most to youAnd… you even end up saving money because you buy less stuff!

If you are ready to create a simpler life, with less this year, try using these powerful minimalist words/maxims.

To inspire you, motivate you, and encourage you to clear the clutter that distracts you, wears you down, and gets in the way of the life, you really want to be living. To challenge your belief that more stuff will actually make you happier To see clearly what matters most to you, so you can make that a priority in your life. Rita’s Checklist Bundle
$9.99 $7.99

Save money with this bundled discount. A combination of Rita’s most popular checklists. The  Rightsize Checklist for Downsizing  and the  Quickstart Guide to Decluttering. Use these powerful words to help you create your own minimalist home and mindset.1.   Declutter

When you have less stuff, you are making room for more living. If you want to live a simpler life, start by removing and getting rid of excess clutter… i.e., stuff you don’t want, need, or use.

Downsize Your Life, Upgrade Your Lifestyle: Secrets to More Time, Money, and Freedom
AVAILABLE IN AMAZON 2.   Notice what’s left

Hint: once you’ve removed stuff you don’t want, need, or use, you start to notice what is left over and what makes you happy. It’s the things you need that serve a purpose in your life and that are meaningful to you.

Focus on these things that matter most, and prioritize only what you value.

This helps you focus on what you want to spend your time, resources, and energy on.

When you know what’s important to you, life gets much simpler.

3.   Say “NO” … A LOT!

Clutter is not just stuff.

Clutter is anything that gets in the way of living a simpler life.

Eliminate anything on your calendar that is unnecessary and that takes time from what matters most to you i.e., obligations and “shoulds”.

Learn to leave white space on your calendar by saying no to what you don’t want.

4.   Decluttering equals self-care

Remember, your home is your living space not a storage space for things you don’t want, need or use.

A clutter-free home provides calm and nourishment to your mind, body, and soul.

5.   Experiences matter far more than stuff!

Which is more important to you? Having more stories to tell about experiences you’ve had or having more stuff you bought to take care of and manage?

6.   Edit, edit, edit!

Decluttering is an ongoing process. Make it a routine, and establish new habits to consistently, and edit your home and your life. Remove anything that you don’t want, need, use, or love… Anything that does not add value to your life.

7.   Gratitude, contentment, “enough”

When you are grateful for what you have, when you are content with owning less, you shift your perspective from wanting and needing more.

8.   Little things matter most

When all is said and done, it’s the tiny moments you remember and will value the most…

If you want to create a simpler life, start by removing excess clutter in your home, and in your life. Use the power of the minimalist mindset and mantras to inspire and motivate you so you can begin to experience the true joy and meaning of living an abundant life with less!

It is life-giving to live with less and that’s cathartic!

Downsizing changes you

During the downsizing journey, a shift takes place within. You start to feel lighter, happier, and more peaceful.

That lightness allows you to clearly see what matters most to you and what doesn’t at this stage of life.

Who do you want to spend more time with?Where do you want to go?What do you want to be doing with your time?

Sometimes that happens rather quickly because as you learn to decide what you want and don’t want in your life, it gets easier to focus on the life you are creating once you are free from all of the things that have been holding you back, weighing you down.

Top Minimalist Tips to Declutter Your Life One Drawer at A Time

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

When you think of decluttering your home, do you immediately get overwhelmed?

Do you start thinking about how could you possibly let go of…

your boxes of family photos?your favorite hobby supplies?those revered sentimental items that sit in plastic storage bins in your basement? The most important minimalist tip to decluttering not just your home but also your life is to declutter one drawer, one shelf, and one cabinet at a time.

You don’t have to take big steps. Each baby step you take overtime will get you to where you’re going without overwhelming you so you stay focused, motivated, and rewarded with each small success.

The second most important minimalist tip to declutter your home and your life is to realize you don’t have to do it all at one time.

Rather, pace yourself.

Pick one area of your home.Set a goal and a period of time you can dedicate each day, each week to that project.Set a timer to accomplish that goal within the time you were allowed to sort, dispose, donate, or keep

Have fun with it! Challenge yourself to finish on time and to make quick and final decisions. Don’t overthink or second-guess yourself.

Download any of our checklists or workbooks (starting at only $5) today. Created by best-selling author Rita Wilkins. Rita gained international attention, inspiring millions, with her TedTalk “Downsize Your Life: Why Less is More.”

The third most important minimalist tip to decluttering your home and your life is to decide you don’t have to do it all alone

When you engage others to help you, it not only makes your workload lighter, but you’ll also have someone to…

encourage you when you want to give up.have a shoulder to cry on when you get triggered by something that brings back memories either good or bad.have a cheerleader who will remind you of just how far you’ve come… and someone who will remind you to take just one step at a time, one drawer at a time.

Before you know it, you’ll start to realize…

that over time, small steps create big changes.that along the way, you’ve learned so much about yourself by slowly, deliberately, and intentionally letting the decluttering process unfold.that you are starting to see your new life through the eyes of a minimalist…when you are surrounded with ONLY the things you use, love, value, and matter most to you.
