Transform Your Home and Your Life: Downsize and Declutter Like a Minimalist

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

The pandemic taught us many things, perhaps one of the most important lessons:

Stand back and look at your life through a new lens.

Rethink what matters most, what’s essential, and what’s not.

During the pandemic, many people chose to declutter their homes by removing those things that took up space and were not important to them, things that were not essential.

They realized how much space was being taken up in their homes with things they barely used or didn’t even need.

What many also discovered is that by getting rid of that clutter, it freed up time, money, and energy to focus more on what matters most to them.

In many cases, they even realized how much more efficient and productive they were because the clutter wasn’t bogging them down.

What they were actually discovering and experiencing is in effect, minimalism.

The less they owned, the more freedom they had.

They felt more in control of their lives even in that dark of Covid. They somehow felt lighter and even happier.

Did this happen to you during Covid? Where the more closets you emptied, the more drawers you edited, the more stuff you got rid of the lighter and happier you became.

Minimalism, at its core, is removing anything that you no longer want, need, or use. Those things that weigh you down, those schedules that leave no room for things you really want to do.

When you let go of these, you experience ways that you can downsize and simplify your life which leads to a simple, less cluttered, and more meaningful life. Over time, you can transform your home and your life when you declutter and downsize like a minimalist. It gradually changes you, your focus, and your life.

How does a minimalist downsize and declutter? How can you learn to really enjoy living with less?

1.   Awareness of the amount of stuff you have

When you become aware of just how much you have and decide to do something about it…

Declutter ruthlesslyKeep only what you want, need, and love2.   Limit how much you allow into your home in the futureAdopt the one in, one out rule.Edit regularly.3.   Repurpose and make doDon’t spend unnecessarily.Get creative. Think of ways to make do with what you have already.4.    Make every inch of your home work for youMake every inch function. No wasted or unused spaces. Each area has a purpose. Each item has a home

Get this 11-page downloadable workbook with personalized worksheets that help you deal with the emotions of downsizing your clutter. Click here.

5.   Incur little or no debtBuy only what you need.Buy quality that will last longer so you have to replace it less often.6.   Don’t be concerned about what others think

Downsizing to a smaller house? So, what if the neighbors still have big houses? If a smaller home fits you and your current lifestyle, just do it and enjoy it!

7.   Enforce boundariesWithout feeling guilty, say no to gift giving.Request experiences instead.

Say no to too many appointments and events on your calendar, especially those not aligned with what really matters to you.

Why waste your time on too many commitments that don’t really matter to you?

8.   Prioritize experiencesTime with family, friends and loved ones is far more meaningful than gifts that you may not need or use.9.   Learn to be content with what you have

After all, if you have decluttered and surrounded yourself with only what you need, used, and love, that is enough. Enjoy having enough and being enough!

Transforming your home and your life is a process. It takes time. For sure, the first steps you take when downsizing and decluttering are the most difficult. It gets easier and easier to let go of overtime… Especially as you begin to experience the benefits of a simpler less cluttered life.

Remember…

When you surround yourself with only things you need and love, you are not giving up anything when you get rid of excess stuff… Rather, you are making room for what matters most to you.

And it doesn’t get any better than that!

The Minimalist Mindset: How to Live More with Less

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

For those of you who know me, follow me, or have ever been to my home or office, you would likely not think of me as a minimalist because I continue to surround myself with a number of hand-selected beautiful things that I’ve collected over many years as an interior designer.

And yet, what they’ve noticed, what I’ve noticed is that over the past 5 years since decluttering, downsizing, and embracing my role as the “Downsizing Designer” is that I’ve definitely changed and evolved over time as I’ve integrated many minimalist practices into my life and lifestyle.

I do believe it’s possible to have It all:To live with less… A lot less! In my case 95% less to live like a minimalist and…Still surround yourself with the special well-curated things that are meaningful to you.

There are many myths surrounding minimalism that I found to simply not be true. These are just a few.

3 Minimalist Myths1.   Minimalism means depriving yourself

This could not be further from the truth. Rather, a minimalist chooses only things that matter most and let go of anything that doesn’t.

Living with less provides more time, money, and freedom to pursue what matters most to you.

In fact, it frees you up to make room for those people, activities, and things you may not have had time for before.

2.   Minimalism is boring

The reality is that when you declutter when you live with less, what happens is you actually begin to value what you do have even more.

A simple life in many ways contributes to a higher quality of life because you have more time and energy to focus on the people and experiences that add a certain richness and value to your life.

Having less helps you to be present, to enjoy each moment!

3.   Minimalism means you have to give up so muchWhen you let go of excess stuff, not having to accumulate even more…When you start to say no to the never-ending cycle of more, bigger, better…

You open the door to a less busy, less cluttered life, a life with more peace, contentment, and freedom.

It’s when you realize your simple life is a good life, one where you have enough and that you are enough.

Get My 5 Step Guide To Lose The Clutter But Not The Memories Workbook

If you are thinking: How can YOU start living a simpler life with less… A life that is less stressful, less busy, and less overwhelming, here are 5 easy steps to start living with less so you can live more. 1.    Declutter your home, your schedule, and your possessions

Of course, you would expect me to recommend decluttering… It’s true!

When you remove the excess in your life i.e., possessions, busyness…When you let go of the desire and the need to accumulate more…

You will immediately start to feel lighter, more agile, and free to live your life differently when you pare down to only what you need and love. Things that are meaningful to you and add value to your life.

This decluttering and paring down takes time. It’s one shelf, one drawer, one closet at a time.

2.    The spending purge or the “no spend” challengeChallenge yourself to one day, then one week, then one month of no spending.Don’t buy anything other than what you absolutely need.

Changing your spending habits and not buying more is a smart way to begin your journey to learning to live happily with less.

3.    Minimize your distractions

When you intentionally reduce your distractions:

Less social mediaLess screentimeLess shopping

You become more aware of the habits that prevent you from being fully present with your mindless spending.

You become more focused, able to enjoy being in the moment, and experience your life differently.

4.    Practice the art of editing and curating

The challenge of living with less never really ends. Minimalism is an ongoing commitment.

Make it a daily habit to edit and curate your possessions, your schedules, and your habits…

Anything that gets in the way of living a simpler more abundant life that is aligned with what matters most to you.

5.    Enjoy new experiences every day

Living with less frees up time, money, and energy to focus on new experiences that will add value to the quality of your life.

Living with less, minimalism provides a sense of control over your own life, your time and what you choose to do with it.

If your life is out of control and you are longing for a simpler life, it’s important to understand that the choice to push the reset button is all yours.

Life doesn’t have to be complicated.  It doesn’t have to be busy. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

If you want a simpler life all you have to do is try integrating some of these minimalist principles into your daily life.

Overtime you will discover:

Your habits are changing.Your desire to own less changes. You change because you’re developing newfound respect and appreciation for the power and the joy of living with less.

Minimalist Living: What is Clutter Blindness?

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Have you ever gotten so used to seeing something that you don’t even notice it anymore?

The boots and snow shovels from last winter that still sit in your mudroom. The old winter coats that no longer fit but take up room in your hall closet. The kid’s trophies from grade school and high school days that sit on a shelf in their bedroom.

You’re so accustomed to seeing those boots in the mudroom or the old winter coats or the old trophies that you’ve become oblivious to the fact they’re even there.

On some level we probably all have some clutter blindness. Think about certain areas of your home that you are accustomed to seeing cluttered. It’s become the norm so you’ve become desensitized to that clutter… As if it doesn’t even exist.

Do any of these areas ring a bell?

Overflowing inbox on your computer or on your phone.A garage full of kids’ toys even though they’ve grown and left the nest.Tax files and bank statements that haven’t been culled in the last 20 years.

Often these areas are not that visible.

Out of sight, out of mind.

But what about the clutter in areas that you’re in every day?

The bathroom vanity cluttered with makeup, toothpaste, shaving cream, etc.The kitchen counter with a week’s worth of unread mail and junk mail. The family room floor cluttered with piles of unread papers, magazines, and incomplete projects.

The reality is we each have different levels of tolerance for clutter.

Some of us see it and it bothers us so we do something about it.

Some of us don’t see it and have no desire to change because we just don’t see it.

I find this to be true in working with married couples or partners who live together.

One might have a very high tolerance for the amount of clutter in their home

They don’t see it, they don’t even notice it, they’re clutter blind.

They could care less. It’s not worth their time, effort, or energy because they don’t even see it.

That partner or spouse is not at all motivated to help with the decluttering process because they literally don’t see it and they don’t get why the other partner becomes so upset.

On the other hand,

The other spouse or partner might have a very low tolerance for clutter in their home

They might feel that they are constantly picking up and cleaning up after everyone in the household and they can never find what they are looking for in all of the clutter.

This creates a tremendous amount of stress and frustration in the household when one is clutter blind and the other is not.

So that’s the bad news… Do you want to hear the good news?

Clutter blindness is curable!

Here’s how.

I will tell you though, that it will take time and patience but if there is a willingness to do the work you can actually learn how to not only cure clutter blindness but teach yourself how to live clutter-free Almost like a minimalist!

Remember, the clutter habit was developed over a long period of time, and just like any other new habit, it will take time and effort to become clutter-free.

3 Steps to Curing Clutter Blindness1.    Acceptance of Clutter Blindness

Accept the fact that you or your partner truly just don’t see the clutter. When you don’t see it there’s obviously no motivation to clear it. Acceptance is key because it’s a starting point.

2.    Awareness of Clutter Blindness

The second big step to curing clutter blindness is to take pictures of every nook and cranny in your home. Every closet, drawer, cabinet, and countertop. This exercise will help you open your eyes to messes you were oblivious to in the past.

It will give you a new perspective and help you look at your clutter more objectively.

When you start to see what you didn’t see before, it will motivate you to do something about it.

3.    Action to Cure Clutter Blindness

If you are motivated to start taking control of your clutter and your life, I strongly recommend asking for help… someone you know who has successfully decluttered or a professional decluttering expert.

This person can help you create a plan, timeline, and milestones to accomplish your decluttering project. They will guide you through the process, step-step-by-step and room-by-room.

They will also help you to discover “why” you cluttered in the first place by confronting you and your old habits. Only then can you begin to train your brain to see the clutter you were once blind to before. That’s when motivation kicks in to cure your clutter blindness once and for all.

Baby Boomers! We Have Too Much Stuff! What Are We Going to Do About It?

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Do you know that the average American household has over 300,000 items in it according to LA Times? And many of us baby boomers have much more “stuff” than that!

Perhaps you’ve become blinded to the actual amount of stuff you have in your home. You just don’t see it anymore.

Clutter blindness is not unusual. It happens over a long period of time because:

We continue to purchase new things we think we want, need, and will use.We continue to receive gifts from others, wanted or unwanted. We often inherit other people’s stuff whether we want it or not.

Our big homes have become the repository of too much stuff!

How do you know when “too much” is “too much”?

These are just a few clear signs that might signal you’ve officially crossed the line of too much stuff:1.    Even though you have a big home, every nook and cranny is filled.

Your big home feels cramped and you never seem to have enough space to enjoy your life. For example, you might need to clear off the kitchen counter just to prepare a meal.

2.   You have more “stuff” than you can handle…

When you finally try to deal with your stuff, you just close your eyes and don’t even try anymore, hoping it will just magically disappear. It won’t!

3.   You attempt to remove some of your clutter but the task is so overwhelming that you get discouraged, even disgusted

So you just put it off to another day and the cycle continues.

If you exhibit any of these signs, likely you are experiencing the impact and burden of too much stuff.

You feel its impact every day when you wake up, get home from a long day, and go to bed at night. You’re stressed out, frustrated, and frequently overwhelmed. You have difficulty focusing in your own home because everywhere you look you realize you have too much “stuff”.And you understand that at some point either you or your children are going to have to deal with it.

You finally wake up and realize you have too much stuff. So exactly what are you going to do about it?

Step 1: Wake up! Admit you have too much stuff!

If you are reading this blog, you’ve already taken the big first step by recognizing you have too much stuff and that you need to start somewhere. You know you need to begin the process of clearing the clutter so you can prevent further accumulation.

Step 2: Dig deep! Understand your WHY!

Understand why you bought so much in the first place and why you continue to keep it.

Top 3 reasons we buy stuff and keep stuff:1. “Just in case you might need it!”

This mindset has allowed us to talk ourselves into buying and keeping things.

You want to be prepared. You don’t want to run out so you buy more although you don’t want or need it, then, you hold onto it.

So, what are you going to do about it?

If you want to let go of this mindset, start asking yourself:

If there is something that you could use instead or substitute for it if this item was no longer in your house. If you could rent or lease that item instead of owning it.If you got rid of it, what’s the worst that could happen?2. “I feel so guilty letting it go!”

This mindset is a big reason that we keep and hold onto things far longer than we should.

Guilt is about how much money you spent on something.Guilt because it was a gift given to you by someone you love.Guilt because you feel obligated and responsible to keep something to pass it on to the next generation.

So, what are you going to do about it?

What do you need to do to let go of your guilt?

If you spent a lot of money on it, admit that money is long gone and it’s not coming back. Chalk it up to a poor decision. Let it go, sell it or donate it.

Remember: A gift is a gift.

Someone showed you they cared when they gave it to you. But once you received it you are not obligated to keep it. It is yours to do which you will with it.

Remember you will always have the memory of someone caring enough to give it to you. That is what will remain.

Start your minimalist decluttering journey with this 5-STEP GUIDE.

3. “I am very sentimental about this item”

We attach memories to an item and we hold onto that item because of the memory.

But when we have too much stuff, when we are attached to too many things, when we have a hard time letting go of sentimental items, we get ourselves into trouble because we have too many things and too many emotions attached.

So, what are you going to do about it?

Recognize it’s the memories that will always be with you, not the item.Reduce the number of sentimental items to only those that are most important to you.

“When you own less you value what you have more.”

Take time to display those few special items so that you can appreciate them each day and allow those memories to live on.

Step 3: Get real. Start to deal with your stuff!Take pictures of every room, every closet, every drawer, and every cabinet. This exercise will open your eyes to the magnitude of stuff that you have. This will help you gain perspective and insight to exactly what you have to do.Know “why” you want to declutter your excess stuff.Set long-term and short-term goals and milestones.Make a plan, and timeline, and challenge yourself. Break it down into smaller manageable steps so that you can accomplish small and big wins.Know what to do with your stuff and where to donate, sell, dispose of or consign it.

Make time for decluttering and downsizing every day, every week. Start small but just start. Take consistent action to show progress.

When you hit roadblocks, pull out the pictures of your house at the beginning of your downsizing and decluttering journey. This will remind you of how far you’ve come.

If you get overwhelmed, remind yourself of your goals, and what it will be like when you have less stuff and less clutter. You will have more time, money, freedom, and energy to pursue what matters most to you

Step 4: Admit it’s possible!

Experience the life-giving benefits of owning less stuff.

Stop buying more!

Be intentional. Buy only what you need.

Stop stockpiling!

Buy only what you need when you need it.

Stop bargain hunting!

It’s not a good deal if you don’t want or need it.

Learn to make due and enjoy living with less. This is a life-changing way to live.It is a new minimalist mindset and way of thinking. It is possible to own less and enjoy life more.Wake up, baby boomers! We have way too much stuff! What are you going to do about it?

3 Must-Haves if You Want to Succeed in Decluttering and Downsizing

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

If you are reading this blog, you are likely interested in how to successfully Declutter or Downsize and perhaps both.

I’m sharing 3 of the must-have mindsets if you want to be successful on your decluttering and downsizing journey.

Just like any other big project you have taken on in your life, it takes much more than you might think to accomplish those lofty goals. But in the end, it is worth it.

I think it’s important to have a reality check before you dive in so that you can prepare yourself both mentally and physically for the work ahead. And also, when you are midway through the process and when you might want to give up, you can remind yourself that if you want to succeed at downsizing and decluttering, you must be…

1.    Fearless2.    Ruthless3.    Tireless

These 3 powerful words and mindsets will help you…

Get startedStay focusedCross the finish line

You’ll be able to start experiencing the many benefits of living a simpler life with less.

Why FEARLESS?

Think about the fears you have about selling the family homestead after 30 years or your children grew up, where your neighbors and friends are, where everything is so familiar.

Yes, you have to be fearless to let go of the mindset that you can’t establish new routines, new friends in a new location or in a smaller home… Perhaps closer to your children and grandchildren.

Think about the fears you have about decluttering, and letting go of those sentimental items that you know will trigger strong emotions.

Yes, you will have to be fearless when you’re going through boxes and boxes of family photos or through your deceased spouses’ closets of clothing or your mother’s treasured china that you may not like or rarely use.

When you take on the mindset of being fearless, you will be able to push through these obstacles and barriers, freeing yourself up from what has previously prevented you from living a simpler life with less stuff so you can have more time and freedom to create that new life you’ve been winning.

Why RUTHLESS?

How many times have you tried to declutter your closet only to find yourself justifying why you can’t? You might find yourself saying:

“It will fit when you lose 10 pounds.”“It was so expensive that you just can’t let it go even though you never wear it.”

How often have you reminded your adult children that you are downsizing and decluttering and that they need to go through their stuff from their childhood bedroom or their stuff in your basement? Being ruthless is not being unkind, it’s being practical because you can’t downsize unless they cooperate.

It helps to take on the mindset of being ruthless because if you want to declutter if you want to downsize to a smaller space, the reality is you will not have sufficient space for those clothes that don’t fit, or those clothes that you spent “good money” on. And likely, you will not have the kind of storage that you currently have that is currently being used to store other people’s stuff.

Being ruthless, yet kind will give you the strength you need to address what you know when your head and heart need to happen… no excuses.

Why TIRELESS?

God knows decluttering and downsizing can be exhausting both physically and emotionally.

You’re just human so you’re bound to have moments, days, or even weeks where you just don’t seem to have the stamina to show up every day, to focus, and to stay motivated to downsize and declutter.

But if you take on the mindset of being tireless, you will get that boost of energy that you need to keep moving.

You will push through those moments and find inspiration in even the smallest successes. You will remind yourself of just how far you’ve come by revisiting before pictures. This will help you regain focus and momentum. These 3 simple words, these 3 powerful mindsets, will continuously remind you of what you need to do to be successful at downsizing and decluttering.Be fearlessBe ruthlessBe tireless
