How to Downsize Your Home and Still Keep What You Love

By Annie Sisk
Guest Blogger

Whether you call it downsizing, right-sizing, or simply decluttering, getting rid of stuff that’s taking up space in your home and in your life unnecessarily can be an incredibly freeing experience.

It’s also an essential step in preparing to sell your home. But it can also be a bit terrifying. After all, most of us own specific things that bring us joy and make life easier or better, even if it’s simply by providing a timeless reminder of good memories. And the process of weeding through an entire home’s worth of belongings can be incredibly stressful, particularly if you also face a home sale and a move.

Fortunately, with some planning and effort, you can quickly eliminate your excess belongings without tossing out things you love, follow these tips for downsizing strategically and relatively painlessly.

1.   Adjust your attitude

No doubt, decluttering and downsizing can trigger a lot of emotional baggage. It can also be an exhausting endeavor that’s physically draining. For those reasons, it’s understandable that you might feel less enthusiastic about the process.

Yet attitude can be everything when sorting through and tossing clutter. Adopting a better more positive mindset about the process and generating a bit of enthusiasm can work wonders for how you experience the process – even if it’s just enthusiasm at the prospect of being done! Try to come up with at least 3 good reasons to get excited about downsizing to shift your thinking and make the process of reducing a year from start to finish.

2.   Give yourself plenty of time and help

It’s easy to underestimate the time it will take to complete a complex project like downsizing. Leave yourself plenty of time to get through it, preferably in small chunks of a few hours at a time. Several weekends in a row are ideal if you can swing it, giving yourself a break between tackling separate areas of the home

Enlist all the help you can get. You might have to make the ultimate decision, but others can go through their belongings and even make preliminary toss/keep piles for your consideration.

3.   Divide and conquer

Schedule your time around different rooms or areas of your home. Tackle the living room one weekend, a bedroom the next, and so forth. This helps you stay focused on the job without getting overwhelmed by all the other rooms you still have to sort through. If you have a full attic or storage shed, leave extra time to go through those belongings as they tend to be a bit more packed and diverse.

You can benefit from Rita’s quick-start workbooks and checklists today.

4.   Design your future lifestyle

As you process your stuff, think about the life you want to live shortly. Does this item have a unique, valued place there? If so, hang onto it. If not, toss it. Alternatively, you can find more creative ways to part with items that aren’t precisely meaningless but still don’t belong in your new or redesigned space.

For example, consider reducing old artwork from children and grandkids to photographic form to hang onto the memory wall while eliminating the physical space. Don’t be afraid to start a new pile of “Do you want this?” (Get your kids and family involved in helping you remove their stuff). Items that you’d like to offer to friends and relatives or a pile of donations for local charity use support. However, if you gently remove unnecessary items from your life keep in mind the future life you’re dreaming of and how you can best create and support it.

5.      Get firm with your stuff and with yourself

For each item it’s helpful to have a standard list of questions to ask yourself while you’re trying to determine what to do with it:

Do I use this? Have I used it in the last 12 months?Does this bring me joy, even if I haven’t used it? Does it brighten my mood or evoke a particular design style I love, for example? Is it inherently valuable? Should I consider selling it?If none of those things are true, with someone I love and joy or love this?

Once you’ve gone through these questions and know whether to keep, sell, or give it away, make your decisions quickly. Aim to handle each item exactly once – no do-overs or re-considerations. Be firm with yourself and place each item in the appropriate pile or container.

Keep, donate, sell, or giveawayIf the thing is worthless and no one wants it, throw it away immediatelyDon’t allow yourself to second-guess yourself6.   Streamline your life

Reducing unnecessary stuff in your home and surroundings can be incredibly empowering and energizing. Paring down helps brighten the room and makes it feel lighter. Decluttering and downsizing are also essential if you plan to sell your home. A lack of decluttering is one of the most common reasons a house doesn’t sell.

While it can be a big undertaking, there’s no need to fear the process. Give yourself time and space to get excited about the results, and remember you’re making room for your new lifestyle!

The Ultimate Minimalist Guide to Avoid Holiday Clutter

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Whether you call yourself a minimalist or not, the thought of excess holiday clutter throughout your home creates a level of angst and anxiety.

It does to many at this time of year.

The influx of beautifully wrapped presents from well-meaning friends and relatives… Gifts that you may not want, need or use.The excessive amount of holiday decorations, stored in plastic bins all year then dispersed around your home to give the feeling of Christmas.… Instead, creating a feeling of chaos, even claustrophobia. The extraordinary amount of food in our pantries, refrigerators, and on our countertops… Awaiting the next round of house guests along with the dishes piled in the sink.

I am intentionally being overly dramatic. For some, the amount of holiday clutter does make you stop and wonder…

How do minimalists avoid this annual nightmare? How do minimalists NOT give presents and still express their love and appreciation to family and friends?

If it sounds impossible, these are a few basic minimalist principles that will help you avoid holiday clutter this year.

The ultimate minimalist guide to managing and avoiding excess holiday clutter1. Gift-giving: Think needs, not wants

Who on your gift list needs something this year and would truly appreciate your thoughtfulness and sensitivity to the fact that they might need something they can’t afford themselves right now?

Groceries for Christmas dinnerShoes for their childrenHelp with a utility billBaby diapers or adult diapers

There is a true joy and giving someone what they need… and might not have been able to get it if it were not for your special gift.

Extending our Black Friday promo!
Go to https://www.designservicesltd.com/store/ and use coupon code: BLACKFRIDAY at checkout.

2. Gift Receiving

It’s only natural that friends and family want to show their love by giving you a gift.

Respect that. You certainly don’t want to take away their joy in giving you a gift.

Be open and honest with them… and with yourself.

Be clear you do not want more stuff; you would prefer experiences or a practical item that you need.

Dinner together to catch upTheater tickets with your spouseA car tune-upA gift card to the grocery store A barometer: If it adds value to your life, but does not add clutter to your home, a well-intentioned gift is a true gift . 3. Home Decorating

If you have already downsized, chances are you’ve already decluttered and purged some of those plastic bins filled with holiday decor.

Continue to purge.

Before you bring those bins up from the basement again this year, take time to edit even more without feeling any guilt.

Make decluttering an ongoing habit. The less you own, the less clutter you’ll have.

When you do bring those bins or that one bin up from the basement, decorate your home, and your tree with only those items that matter most to you and bring you joy during this holiday season.

Remember that minimalism is not just about physical clutter.

It’s also about:

A cluttered scheduleA packed “to-do” listA budget that has no boundariesA toxic relationshipGoals that don’t align with what matters most to you and what allows you to live an abundant life with less stuff and less clutter.

If something in your home this holiday does not reflect your priorities, ask yourself if it’s time to let it go.

A minimalist lifestyle is one of constantly striving for adding more of what matters and less of what doesn’t matter.

It’s about being intentional in every area of your life every minute of the day.

Downsizing Your Home in Your 60s? Read This First

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

When you reach the age of 60, you’re beginning to enter a new stage of life that can be both terrorizing and exciting. It’s a time of change… big change, and these changes can be scary because you’re being confronted with stepping out of your comfort zone and letting go of what has been comfortable.

Downsizing from the house you raised your kids inLeaving the neighborhood where everyone knows you and you know themRetiring from a job or career you’ve had for 20 to 30 years

A common strategy for baby boomers 60+ who have become or will soon become empty-nesters is to consider downsizing to a smaller home, one that is more manageable, more efficient, and more affordable.

This kind of life-changing decision is not easy.

As a matter of fact, it can be so overwhelming and emotional causing some baby boomers to resist and defer their decision to declutter and downsize to someday in the future.

So how do you know when you’re ready to downsize and declutter?

Early BLACK FRIDAY! Save 50% off of Rita's most popular decluttering products. Get it NOW, CLICK HERE!Here are 3 wake-up calls for you to watch out for that will help you decide it’s time.1. The big house is just not working for you anymore

With the kids gone, the house feels empty. There are too many unused rooms. The house is too big, too expensive, and too expensive to maintain.

You’re spending time, money, and energy just keeping up with the big house… and it’s wearing you out!

2. It’s time to discover what’s missing in your life

Do you hear yourself saying, “Something’s missing in my life?”

It feels like your life is on autopilot. It’s like being on a hamster wheel, getting nowhere. You’re tired of status-quo living. You’re longing for a new life and lifestyle that lights you up, makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning, and that you have more time money, and freedom to pursue what matters most to you.

You may not even know what that something missing is, but it is calling you.

3. It’s time for YOU… and it’s about time!

Your kids are grown. they’ve left the nest, and your responsibilities are much lighter.

Your life has changed. You’ve changed. It’s time for you to prioritize yourself and what matters most to you at this stage of your life.

Are any of these wake-up calls calling you?

If so, recognizing and acknowledging that something is calling you is the easy part. The hardest part is to answer that call and act upon it so you can move forward.

Remember: someday is not a day of the week. If you are being nudged to let go, and move on to a new home and a new lifestyle, take heed. Listen to that voice and take action now.

If not now, when will you make the decision to downsize and declutter?

Here are some quotes from baby boomers who waited too long. They regret not downsizing and decluttering sooner.

“I wish I had downsized sooner. I wish I had said goodbye to the big house it was no longer working for me and said hello sooner to a smaller home that feels right for my new stage of life.”

“I wish I had seized down the opportunity to live my life more intentionally rather than living by default. I could’ve had more time, money, and freedom to travel more when I was younger and still healthy.”

“I wish I had prioritized myself sooner and spent less time worrying about making a perfect choice.”

“If I had stepped out of my comfort zone sooner, taking a chance on living in a smaller space, I would’ve had much more time money, and freedom to do more of what I wanted to do and less of what I had to do.”

“I wish I had given myself permission to Downsize and Declutter sooner. I realize now how much time and money I wasted I’m trying to impress others with my big house, when in fact, I’m so much happier now that I live in a small home. My life is so simple.”

These are just a few examples of real people’s experiences… And regrets they didn’t listen to that wake-up call sooner.

As you are trying to discern whether you should take that big step to downsizing and decluttering your 60s or not, I encourage you to listen to that little voice in your head saying, it’s time.

The easy part is hearing that call.

The hard part is answering it and taking action so you can live more fully in your third act, making it your best act yet!

Lifestyle Design: What Is It? How Does It Work?

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Let me ask you a question.

Did you jump out of bed today so excited about doing work you love,

being with people you love, and doing what lights you up?

Or

Did you have to drag yourself out of bed, dreading going to a job you can’t stand, being with people you can barely tolerate?

Two different people.

Two different experiences of their life.

Which of the two do you most relate to?

What if I told you that it’s possible to design the life that you want to live…

One that aligns with what matters most to you.One that would make you want to jump out of bed each morning.

That’s what lifestyle design is… designing a life you love!

Lifestyle design is…Living your life on purpose rather than by default.Take control of your own life and live it on your own terms regardless of your circumstances.

You don’t have to be a millionaire to live a life you love. It’s about choosing how you want to spend your time, money, and energy.

For example:

You could choose to work 24/7 or you could choose to spend more time with your family each night at dinner. You could choose to work at a job you can’t stand with people you just tolerate or you could seek another job that is more fulfilling yet provides a good income.

None of this is easy. But the question becomes do you want to live that life you want to jump out of bed for or do you want to continue living a status quo life?

The choice is yours!

A thumbnail for black friday discount with coupon code.

BLACK FRIDAY sale! Save 50%-70% off of Rita’s most popular decluttering products.

Use code BLACKFRIDAY at checkout, click here.

Here’s how lifestyle design works:1. Define what matters most to you in all areas of your life

Relationships, career, health, spirituality, fun, and adventure, etc.

2. Create a vision for the life you want… and don’t want

Do you want to work remotely so you can spend more quality time with your children?

Do you want to move closer to your kids so you can spend more time with them and your grandchildren?

Do you want to travel to places you’ve never been?

3.     Prioritize your time

Who do you want to spend more time with?

Where do you want to be?

How do you want to spend your time?

Time is one of our most precious resources. We can never get it back.

Create boundaries around commitments that don’t align with what matters most to you and prototype a new lifestyle.

4. Prioritize how you spend and use your resources

Before you buy that fancy new car or the newest gadget, ask yourself if enhances the life you truly want.

Does it add value to your life and does it align with what matters to you? Or

Are you spending money and resources because you are being influenced by trends and social expectations?

Bottom line:

Lifestyle design is about creating, designing, and prioritizing the life you really want. One that aligns with what matters most to you.

It is about saying no to status-quo living. It is about challenging yourself to take control, and live life on your terms, not someone else’s.

Even the smallest decisions you make each day can make the most significant difference to taking one step closer to living the life you really want.

It’s about living an ordinary life or an extraordinary life. Which would you choose? The choice is yours! “Everyone dies, but not everyone has truly lived.” ~ CS Lewis

Quick-Start Guide and Checklist to Make Your Home Holiday Ready

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

With the holidays just a few short weeks away, you might be wondering how to prepare your home quickly for holiday entertaining

And, you might be wondering what you can do now to prepare ahead of time so you can truly enjoy your family, friends, and holiday season without undue stress.

This quick-start guide and checklist to make your home holiday-ready is actually intended to slow you down, not speed you up so that this holiday season will be one to remember… not one that is a big blur!

But before you start checking things off your list, remind yourself of these tips that will help you focus on the meaning of the holidays and what matters most to you.

1.    Holidays are about making memories2.    People are giving fewer gifts3.    The gift of your time and experiences is priceless4.    People are decorating less5.    People are spending less on gifts and holiday decor

When you keep these 5 things in focus, it will be easier to prioritize exactly what you want and don’t want to do to prepare for the holidays.

Years ago, when I decluttered my big house and downsized to a much smaller condo, I lowered my expectations that everything had to be perfect.

It helped me simplify and prioritize not just the amount of decorating, but also the amount of food and gifts.

I quickly learned… the true meaning of less is more!

Holiday decluttering bundle Rita Wilkins

1.   Let people contribute if they want to

When people ask if they can bring something, start to say yes rather than trying to do it all by yourself.

2.  Learn to decorate less and enjoy it more

If holiday lights make you happy, decorate more simply with just lights, fresh greens, colorful bows, and maybe a few small decorative items.

3.  Focus holiday decor in main areas

Focus your decorating on the front door, foyer, family room, dining room, and powder room. A few well-selected decorations plus greens and lights will make your holiday festive but not complicated.

4.  Splurge on your guestrooms

If you are planning on overnight guests, have fun indulging them in a beautifully

decorated guestroom. Repurpose what you have with fresh pillows, sheets, bedding, and towels. Fill a basket with an extra blanket or two.

Provide a charging station for their convenience. Surprise them with a gift bag and a handwritten note. The gift bag can have a few snacks and a bottle of water. It doesn’t have to be complicated.

5.  Plan simple activities

It’s always fun to include your family and simple holiday fun that not only helps take the burden off you, but it also helps to create new memories.

Prepare dinner together, delegate food prep, setting the table and clean up.Have a baking party

Get your holiday cookies and pies made with very little effort on your part when you have several helping hands.

Play board games

Have fun, compete for a little and just enjoy being together.

Rather than rushing to get it all done before the holidays this year,

Slow downPace yourselfPrioritize time with your guests and make sure to take time with yourself This holiday… Do less and enjoy it more!
