Lifestyle Trend Goes Mainstream as Baby Boomers Embrace Minimalism

BY RITA WILKINS JANUARY 27, 2023 LIFESTYLE

There’s a cultural shift taking place right before our eyes. The generation that created consumerism is now embracing the idea of choosing to live with less… much less!

For years, baby boomers’ big wallets and significant disposable income allowed them to buy big houses, fill them up with lots of beautiful stuff, then to buy even bigger houses, and fill them up with even more stuff… and so it continued.

But as we’ve gotten older and a little wiser, and as we enter a new phase of our lives, many baby boomers are adopting minimalism as a lifestyle choice because they’ve discovered that less can really mean more.

Less stuff, more freedom. More freedom, more life. Less clutter, simpler life. Simpler life, more happiness.

When you hear the word minimalism, you might naturally think of millennials, not baby boomers.

But a fast-growing trend within the baby boomer generation is to learn how to live abundantly with less… a lot less.

While the minimalist lifestyle spans across many generations, it is a relatively new concept to baby boomers, who, for years, adopted a consumer lifestyle of “bigger, better, more.”

We Have Learned

Many of us have learned a little bit about minimalism from our own adult children, who are extremely selective about what they allow into their homes and their lives. We may have even experienced a resounding “no” when we offered them some of our stuff as we decluttered our basements and attics.

Perhaps turned off by growing up in homes with an overabundance of stuff, the younger generations have clearly identified what they deem essential, and they also have the courage and willpower to say “no” to what’s not necessary or useful.

Our generation is finally starting to realize that having excessive amounts of stuff not only creates clutter, disorder, and chaos in our homes and in our lives, but that stuff can also feel empty and meaningless. Many boomers have started to realize that when they intentionally remove the excess and unnecessary stuff, they free up time, money, and energy to focus on what matters most to them.

The days of spending so much of our time, money, and energy on accumulating “more” seems to be dissipating. Instead, we are beginning to discover what our kids knew all along… LESS IS MORE!

5 Key Factors Contributing to the Cultural Shift to Living with LessThe Decluttering Movement

Marie Kondo’s book and Netflix show, Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, has had a major influence on people of all ages to live with less, and to embrace minimalism. In her book, Kondo encourages us to remove anything from our home that doesn’t spark joy.

The Pandemic

The Covid lockdown challenged baby boomers to rethink their priorities. Many were forced out of their jobs, while others opted for early retirement.

In an effort to make their savings last longer, many baby boomers decided to declutter their large homes, downsize, and move to smaller homes to reduce expenses and live a simpler, more fulfilling life.

Aging and Mortality

The pandemic also forced us to face our own mortality. Realizing that they were much happier not working, many baby boomers discovered new ways to live their best life right now while they still could.

Many chose to sell their big homes and downsize so they could live closer to their children and grandchildren. They chose meaningful experiences with their family and loved ones over the big house and the big mortgage.

Life Circumstances

When our lives change, so must we change and adapt.

Divorce, death of a spouse, caregiving, and declining health are just a few situations we are faced with in our daily lives.

By choosing to sell the family, homestead, declutter, and downsize to a smaller, more affordable, and manageable home is often what’s necessary to restore some semblance of calm in stressful life-changing situations.

Lifestyle Choice

Many boomers are just plain tired of the mental, physical, and financial burden of their once-beloved large homes and properties.

They are ready to let go of much of the stuff that weighs them down and prevents them from living the life they really want… a lifestyle that provides more mobility, flexibility, and a lot less responsibility.

They can then choose to spend their time on what matters most to them: their relationships, experiences, health, and passions that light them up.

Fortunately, it’s not too late.

We’ve Learned Much from Our Life ExperiencesMore stuff doesn’t make us happier.Too much stuff gets in the way of the more fulfilling life we could be living.Stuff is just stuff and it’s no longer as important to us as it once was.

An overabundance of stuff causes clutter and clutter comes with a cost to our health, well-being, and overall happiness… a cost, that at this stage of our lives, we cannot afford to pay.

Knowing that we have fewer years ahead of us than we do behind us, it’s not at all surprising that we want to:

MAXIMIZE our life experiences, and MINIMIZE our excess clutter.

The trend towards minimalism, to travel light, and to pare down our possessions to only what we need, love, and will use is the natural offshoot of the wisdom gained from years of overindulging and overspending.

Settle for LESS

It’s only natural that we want to settle for less in our third act.… not less life, just less stuff so we can focus on what matters most.

The cultural shift and trend towards minimalism for boomers is an example of our shifting values as we age and how we are choosing to spend our time, money, energy, and resources.

At one point in our lives, we likely chose to buy more because it gave us pleasure, and we enjoyed it… the big house, the beautiful designer furniture, and the dinner table.

But at some point, perhaps not too long ago, we acknowledged that all of that stuff was just stuff.

It felt empty. It felt superficial.

The never-ending desire for “more” robbed us of precious time and resources.

The vicious cycle of buying “more” promised happiness, but never really fulfilled that promise.

As a baby boomer myself who has decluttered and downsized and who now speaks nationally on the impact of living with less, I’m not at all surprised that baby boomers are embracing the freedom of less.

It’s our third act, and by choosing to say goodbye to the emptiness of material possessions, we are saying hello to a richer, more abundant life.

We are going from a life full of stuff to a life filled with meaning.

A Minimalist’s Top 3 Tips When Cleaning Out Your Parents’ Home

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Do you have friends or family members who have experienced cleaning out their parents’ home after they passed away? If you have, you probably heard many stories from them about how difficult it was because they were not only grieving the loss of their loved one but they were also tasked with clearing out a lifetime of belongings while still running their own homes and lives.

Many of them were probably so overwhelmed and emotional at that time that it was just easier for them to bring many of their parents’ things back to their own home, or to put them in the storage unit until they could deal with it “someday.”

Years later, many complain that the furniture and boxes from their parents’ home are still sitting in their basement, their attic, and the garage… or they continue to pay for a storage unit to house the things they did not deal with at the time.

Fast forward…

You didn’t deal with it, so now, your kids have to not only deal with your things but also your parents’ things… and chances are many of your parents’ belongings will end up just getting thrown away.

Not a pretty picture or subject that we like to talk about, but one we all have to face whether we like it or not.

So how DO you honor your parents, and their lifetime of possessions, while also respecting yourself and your own home… especially if you are trying to declutter and downsize? So how DO you clean out your parents’ home without filling up your OWN home?

For sure, clearing your parents’ home after they die, is one of the hardest things for us to do in our lifetime.

But if you follow these 3 minimalist tips or principles, they will help you create a foundation for a better decision-making process.

In the long run, during this very emotional time of your life, these principles will help you avoid the mistake of cluttering your own home with things you don’t want, need, or will not use.

3 Top Minimalist Tips When Cleaning Out Your Parents’ Home1.    Commit to your own values and what matters most to you

If you are trying to downsize and declutter your own home if you are committed to living with less, why bring things into your home that cause additional clutter?

Be firm about what you allow into your home.Bring only the things that really matter to you and will add value to your life.

For example:

Ask yourself if you really need all of that extra furniture, the accessories, etc. or would it be a better choice to keep just that one special chair that your dad used to read in every night? It’s a chair you like and would use every day.

2.    Set boundaries and prioritize what you need and what will fit into your existing home or new smaller home

Get real about just how much space you have before allowing anything more into your home.

Having a list of what you could use as you go through your parents’ things, you will be able to make better decisions about whether it fits or not.

3.    Make intentional decisions

Have the confidence and self-assurance to say “No.”

When you know what you value (like living with less and having a less cluttered life)When you set priorities and boundaries about what you will allow into your home…

You will have the confidence to be true to yourself and not be influenced by outside pressure to say yes to things you don’t want, don’t need, or will not use.

This will provide true freedom to live the life you really want, free from unwanted clutter and excess stuff.

It will allow you to experience far less stress and overwhelm during a very difficult time of your life. You will know that you have honored your parents and their memories when you surround yourself with only the items you need and will use.

These fewer items will serve as reminders of your loved ones each day while helping you avoid the undue stress of additional clutter in your own home.

Life After Decluttering: Starting Over in Retirement

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Isn’t it interesting that for years you’ve looked forward to retirement? You’ve planned for it.

You get excited at the thought of new adventures ahead, a new lifestyle that might include sleeping in, controlling your own schedule, and having time to do what you want when you want.

You’ve even prepared your home for a simpler life in retirement. You’ve decluttered your basement, your attic, your garage, and every single closet. You’ve got rid of those boxes that have been sitting around for years. You’ve pared down all of your things to only what you need, use, and love.

It might’ve taken a while to get it all done, but it was worth it!

You’re now reaping the benefits of life after decluttering.

But then as the time comes closer and retirement is just around the corner, you start to have second thoughts:

Are you doing the right thing? What will you do with all of that extra time? Will you get bored? What will give your life meaning and purpose if you’re not working?

Does this sound familiar to you?

Are you getting cold feet when it comes to starting a whole new life in retirement?

If you are, you’re not alone. One of the biggest challenges that baby boomers face is how to start over when they retire.

Just for a moment, think back on your own life, and remind yourself of how many other life changes and transitions you’ve already successfully maneuvered.

Starting over in retirement is just one more opportunity to begin again. And this time, you might even consider it a catalyst to reimagine and reinvent yourself and your lifestyle so you can live your best life yet!

Starting over in retirement is an opportunity for you to reassess your life. What’s working, and what’s not working? What do you want more of?What do you want less of?Starting over in retirement is an opportunity for you to reevaluate your priorities.

Take time to discern what’s most important to you now at this time of your life.

Live closer to your kids and grandkids so you’ll be able to participate in their lives.Travel to places you’ve been dreaming of for a very long time.Write that book, take those classes, whatever it is that’s been on your list.As our lives change so do our priorities and our goals.

And the reality is… we’re living longer.

We’re not done yet!

We want to make the most of the years we have left on this earth

Get Started on Your 2023 Resolutions: A Minimalist Home Decluttering Checklist

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Decluttering is one of the top 3 New Year’s resolutions people make each year, preceded by weight loss and exercise.

So, it’s easy to understand why people try, give up, and then show up again the following year determined to try once again.

If you are committed to winning the game of decluttering once and for all, I’ve created a free Minimalist Home Decluttering Checklist to inspire and motivate you to finally achieve your goal of decluttering your home and your life so you can live a more peaceful life with a lot less clutter.

You’re probably saying, “but I’m not a minimalist!” and that’s OK.

But I’d like you to consider that when you adopt some of the principles of minimalism while decluttering, you will likely discover that half the battle with clutter is about mindset.

When you have a winning mindset, it will help you get started and keep going on your New Year’s resolution to declutter your house, and live a simpler life with less stuff and less stress.

And chances are that in the process, you will likely discover that you need far less than you think you need!

6 minimalist guiding principles that will help you have a winning decluttering mindset as you start this journey1.    Reduce the number of items in your home to ONLY things you need and that add value to your life.

2.    Optimize your space, time, health, and life by reducing anything that distracts from a simpler, higher quality of life.

3.    Surround yourself with items that you love and use for a calm, more peaceful life.

4.    Practice gratitude daily. Be grateful for all that you have… not what you don’t have.

5.    Experience the joy of living with less, having enough, being enough and being content with all that you do have.

6.    Once you have digested the 5 key principles of minimalism, take time to discern your deep “why” for decluttering. i.e., better relationship with my family and spousei.e., more time, money, and freedom to live the life I want to live without so much stuff, weighing me down

Then….

1.    Create your vision, for what life would be like after decluttering.2.    Create a detailed plan and action steps for how you will accomplish your decluttering goals.3.    Start small, one step at a time accomplishing a little each day.4.    Get others to support you on your decluttering journey.5.    Review your vision and goals regularly.

Room by room, area by area, utilize my new Minimalist Home Decluttering Checklist.

Commit to removing any and all excess clutter in your home, and in your life that impacts your ability to live your life fully on your own terms.

When used while decluttering, these 4 words will help you make quicker and more powerful decisions.

Unused             Unwanted              Unloved        Unnecessary

Settle for less “stuff”… you’ll be glad you did!
