3 Fun New Tool to Help You Defeat Paper, Phone, and Photo Clutter

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

How much time do you spend each week looking for…

An important document you thought you filedA client email who responded to your proposalA photo on your phone you wanted to share it with a friend

It’s frustrating, isn’t it? And think of the time you wasted.

When you think of clutter, you probably immediately think of the physical clutter in your home… the closet, the basement, garage, etc.

But, in fact, 3 of the biggest areas people struggle with and complain about are:

Paper ClutterPhone ClutterPhoto Clutter

In this blog, I’m going to reveal 3 fun tools that will help you conquer clutter in those 3 areas.

Think of it this way: if you have a toolbox in your home, it’s intended to help you accomplish a specific task. You use the right tool for the right job.

Similarly, there are tools you can use to defeat paper, phone, or photo clutter. These tools, when used properly and regularly will lead to a simpler, more organized, and productive life.

You’ll no longer need to waste time and energy trying to locate those important papers, emails, or photos. You’ll have the right tool for the job.

You might be asking, where you should start because you struggle with all 3 categories?

I always recommend that you start with the category that you struggle with the most for the one that bothers you the most.

If your nemesis is:

1.   Paper Clutter

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the unwanted and unsolicited paper clutter. Each day we receive catalogs, junk mail, flyers, credit card solicitations, and so much more.

A simple tool you can use on a daily and weekly basis:

In your mind, create 3 piles:1.   Don’t want

Discard or shred

2.   Don’t want or need

File and digitize it

3.   Would like to keep

Digitize to create a memory box

Then, perhaps your biggest challenge is…

2.   Phone Clutter

You are definitely not alone in this category. Like you, I have wasted valuable time and effort with a device that was designed to make it simpler, more efficient, easier, and faster… not more complicated, causing frustration and stress.

A simple tool you can use to help you defeat phone clutter will take a little time but is well worth the time and effort.

The big cleanup: Minimizing your apps1.   Delete all apps that you do not use.

Be brutal with them and have only the apps that you use regularly.

2.   Organize the apps that you do use.

Organize them in a way that makes the most sense to you.

Examples:

By TypeBy FunctionBy Alphabet… whatever works for you.

3.   Delete all voicemails, texts, and contacts that you no longer use

Until recently I had never done this and once I decided to remove all of the voicemails, and texts that were outdated, and once I chose to update my contacts, it was incredible how much more storage I had on my phone and how much easier it made my life.

Last, but certainly not least:

3.   Photo Clutter1.   Photos on your phone

Clean out the photos that you’ve saved on your device. Instead, save them to the cloud and make sure to turn on automatic backup so you can retrieve them if you lose your phone.

2.   Physical photos

I’ve talked about this many times in my blogs because the thought of going through boxes and boxes of photos, a lifetime of memories is just plain daunting… and emotional.

What happens is that we avoid this clutter until one day we have to face it because we realize if we don’t, it will be left to our kids and grandchildren.

A simple tool you can use to declutter your photos is time blocking.

Once you’ve decided to take on this project

Once you have taken the time to create a goal for just how many physical photos you would like to realistically keep i.e., two shoeboxes

Time-block a schedule for 30 to 60 minutes each week to work on one box at a time, to sort, organize, and discard duplicates. Make a schedule that you can and will commit to each week.

Don’t expect overnight progress. This project takes time but can be easily managed when you block out time on your calendar each week.

And remember you don’t have to save all physical photos. Use a digitizing service likelegacybox.com or smart photo manager.

When you use these 3 simple tools you will be able to manage your paper, phone, and photo clutter so you have more time in freedom to pursue other things that are meaningful to you.

From Clutter to Clarity: A Countdown Challenge to A Clutter-Free Life

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

When you look around at your cluttered home or specific areas of your home that always seem to be cluttered… Have you ever wondered what the clutter is trying to tell you?

What messages are those “never-worn” clothes saying to you? What message are those never-ending stacks of unread books and magazines telling you? What messages are the unopened boxes in the basement and attic saying to you?

If you can gain a deeper insight as to why you clutter, it will make it easier to let go of things you’ve been holding onto—having a clearer understanding of what and why you clutter is a powerful motivator to make some lasting changes in your life when it comes to both physical and mental clutter. It will help you understand your old behaviors and habits so you can address what’s been stopping you.

Bottom line: There’s more to clutter than meets the eye!Clutter on the outside (the physical clutter) in many ways tells us more about what’s going on the inside.Subtle or not so subtle, clutter sends messages.

1.   Closet ClutterWho doesn’t have something in their closet that reminds them of a younger, thinner, happy you? I.e., the wedding dress, those skinny jeans, that little black dress.

Looking at them in your closet reminds you of how you felt when you were wearing them, who you were with what you were doing. They bring back good memories.

Even though you might not have worn those skinny jeans or that little black cocktail dress in the last 5 or 10 years, when you understand that you kept them because…

·         They remind you of when you were 10 pounds lighter.·         They remind you of a special celebration in your life.·         They are a reminder of those things that trigger a feeling you want to recapture. How can you let go?·         Start with 5 items in your closet you haven’t worn in at least a year.·         Ask yourself why you keep them.·         Understand that those items are reminding you of something in your past and that they triggered a nostalgic feeling that you don’t want to lose. ·         Then, let them go.

2.   Attic ClutterIs your attic or basement filled with boxes of family memories?Boxes of photos bring back both good and bad memories and they might also trigger feelings of guilt, regret, sadness, or loss.Greeting cards from your loved ones often trigger a feeling of sadness and loss.Furniture inherited from parents or loved ones often trigger guilt for not using something they loved and wanted you to have.If you are struggling with letting go of these items, box by box, item by item, ask yourself why you’ve been holding onto them. I.e., your grandmother’s hope chest.·         Recall the memory of the hope chest and your grandmother giving it to you.·         Take a picture of it.·         Write a story about it and why it meant so much to her.·         If you don’t like it or can’t use it, let it go. Give it to someone who might.

Understanding the emotion and the feelings that you are having about these items will help you let go of them.

3.   Garage Clutter and Storage Unit ClutterIs your garage or storage unit cluttered with the boxes and items you don’t even remember what’s inside of them?

And then, when you continue to add to those piles, letting them stack up for months or even years, they come to represent things in your life that remain unfinished. The task you are facing is so monumental that you might have very little mental energy to deal with it, so instead of facing it, you avoid it completely.

Once you understand that you are simply avoiding those areas because they are overwhelming…·         Create a plan for decluttering and disposing of items in that area.·         Block out time weekly, or monthly to accomplish this big project so you can take one step at a time to declutter.

There are many areas of our lives where clutter gets in the way of us living our best life.

Take the time to discern why and how clutter is impacting your life.

·         Email clutter·         Desk clutter·         Calendar clutter·         Social media clutter·         Car clutter·         OthersYou will begin to understand why you clutter in the first place. Then you can begin to experience what it feels like to live a clutter-free life.

I’ve just touched the surface on this subject, but will be sharing more with you in future blogs and will be offering a new tool to help you challenge yourself to live a clutter-free life.

Decluttering? Get Going. Keep Going. 3 Top Tips How to Stay Motivated

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

What would you say is the hardest part of your decluttering journey so far?

Would you say…

Not knowing where to start because there is so much “stuff”. It’s overwhelming! Not knowing how to start… which room to start on or which decluttering method to use?

Most people will say both, where to start and how to start.

But often overlooked… once you start…

How do you STAY motivated? How do you keep the momentum going?

These 3 top tips will help you deal with these sticking points. Just know that like with any other large project, getting stuck is inevitable and it’s also just part of the process.

It’s okay to get stuck, but don’t let it stop you completely.

When you get stuck, the key is to RESTART AND REBOOT.

My top 3 tips on how to get going, keep going and stay motivated on your decluttering journey1.   Repeat the mantra: Some is better than none.Isn’t it better to declutter part of your closet than none at all?Isn’t better to declutter part of your hobby room than none at all?

Remind yourself that some is better than none. In other words, acknowledge your small wins. It’s still an accomplishment.

We’re often too quick to criticize ourselves for not completing a project. This simple mindset shift of “some is better than none” will help you get in the habit of looking at how much you’ve already accomplished rather than how much you still have to do.

This one simple shift will help you remain positive, feel accomplished, and stay motivated.

And FYI: When you do get stuck… STOP!Try to understand WHY you’re stuck.Try to understand what’s stopping you from decluttering.

Often our lack of desire or motivation to continue has more to do with our fear of letting go because we attach meaning to our stuff.

If you let go of your Mom’s china, she’ll be upset. If you let go of your Mom’s china, you would be disrespecting her because you would be giving away something she loved.

Once we identify what stops us, why we’re stuck, why we hold on, the understanding is what empowers us and allows us to let go, declutter, and keep moving.

Check out my 5-Step Guide: How to Let Go of Sentimental Clutter but Not the Memories on our online shop.

2.   Play the PAIN/GAIN GAME

This game will help you understand why you want to declutter. It’s simple and gives you clarity almost instantly.

Each of us has our own reason for wanting to declutter. What is yours?

Examples of PAIN/GAIN GAME: Try it yourself!

·        Pain: Your house is always messy and cluttered causing stress, upset, and family arguments.·        Gain: When your house is decluttered with less stuff, it will be more peaceful, a sanctuary and safe haven you will know the joy of living in a clutter-free home.·        Pain: You can never find what you need when you want it or need it.·        Gain: When your house has less stuff, your things will be easier to find. That will give you peace of mind and make your life so much easier.·        Pain: You can’t stop buying more stuff. It’s an endless cycle. You know you’re wasting money and you know you’re only making matters worse.·        Gain: When you take time to understand why you keep buying more stuff, you might realize you’re trying to fill a gap i.e., loneliness.

Once you figure that out, you can stop yourself when you’re tempted to buy more so you can save money and use your time more productively to reduce clutter rather than adding more to it.

Once you understand the pain that clutter is causing you, the journey gets much easier.

For me, if you listen to my TEDx talk, it was a trip to a Third World country where people had so little but they were happy.

My motivation for decluttering and downsizing, ultimately giving away 95% of my stuff to people who need it or wanted it was that I wanted a simpler life with less.

For me, the PAIN was too much stuff, not enough time, money, or freedom. My stuff weighed me down.

The GAIN was a new lifestyle with more time, money, and freedom than I had experienced in years. That allowed me to pursue other things that mattered more to me.

This mindset shift changed my life and motivated me to downsize and declutter.

The joy of letting go far outweighed the pain of hanging on.

3.   Make decluttering a game!

When you’re stuck, do whatever it takes to make decluttering fun so you can stay motivated.

A few suggestions:

A.   Schedule a party at your house two weeks from today.

How many of you clean up and organize your home before people come over? I do!

Schedule a party at your house two weeks from now.

Invite people over you’ve been afraid to ask because their house is “perfect” and yours is messy. (FYI they probably cleaned up before you came over too!)

Give yourself 2 weeks to declutter, organize areas of your home your guest will see. I.e., Living room, dining room, family room, kitchen, powder room.

Challenge yourself to not only clean and organize but also to declutter each of those areas.

There’s nothing like a deadline to motivate you!

B.   Plan an actual extreme decluttering party

Invite just a few close friends or family members to help you declutter for 2 to 3 hours on a particular day and to help you dispose of or donate items in one area of your home. I.e., a small section of your basement or garage.

Have all of the necessary packing materials, boxes, trash bags etc.

Create 3 piles: keep, dispose of, donatePromise your team a great meal and refreshments after you’re done.Promise to reciprocate.

C.   Give yourself a party

Make it fun, make it challenging, and make it happen!

·       Time: How much can you accomplish in 15 minutes, one hour, one weekend day?·        Category:How many bags of unused shirts/tops?How many bags of unworn dresses and suits? How many bags of ill-fitting shoes and clothes can you accomplish in 3 hours?·        Area:Kitchen cabinets, pantry, linen closet, junk drawer, your car.How much can you accomplish in that one area without stopping?

These are just a few ideas to have fun while you declutter. Make sure you reward yourself with an experience… Not more stuff. Make it something consumable i.e., dinner at your favorite restaurant, a massage, or mani-pedi.

To summarize: There are 3 mindset shifts that will not only get you going on your decluttering journey but they will also keep you going and help you stay motivated.

1. Repeat the mantra: Some is better than none.2. Play the PAIN/GAIN GAME3. Make decluttering a game!Check out our new online shop for tools that will support you in your downsizing and decluttering journey.

Top 8 Lessons I Learned from My Mom About Keeping It Simple

By Rita Wilkins
The Downsizing Designer

Have you ever sat down to make a list of all of the things you learned from your mother? In all of these years, I’ve never actually made a list, but once I got started, I couldn’t stop! So far, I have 73 items on my list.

I was amazed at just how much I learned and integrated her wisdom into my own life each day. They do say that you become like your mom and I’m so glad I did because my mom has become my own words to live by.

I’m dedicating this blog to all of you mothers, mothers-to-be, and other women in your life who have been like a mother to you.

I also want to take a moment to say that being a mom to my 2 sons, Sean and Kevin, is the most important and most fulfilling role I have ever had. I don’t know if they are reading this blog, but if they are known how much I love you and admire you … And that being your mother has been gods greatest gift to me. Thank you, guys!

As a little bit of background, I grew up in a family with five kids. Our dad was a pilot, we were an Air Force family and had the opportunity to travel all over the world. I went to 9 different schools and lived in 9 different homes.

I always admired how our mom made all these moves and transitions seem so simple and that somehow, she also made them fun!

My Top 8 Lessons I Learned from My Mom About Keeping Life Simple:

1. Smile! You never know what someone’s going through

I can still feel her elbow poking me in the grocery line encouraging me to smile at the clerk who look like she was having a bad day.

She taught me how that one simple smile could make a difference in someone’s day.

2. Learn to listen. That’s how you learn about people and what matters to them

Being heard… really heard matters. It tells someone you were interested, that you care about them and what they are saying.

Mom taught me the importance of creating a true connection with people by simply listening to them

3. Be curious. Ask questions

This really mattered to our mom and now, to me. As we traveled the world and lived in many different areas of the country and Europe, she had the ability to engage anyone in conversation by simply asking questions.

Being curious expands your thinking and your worldview.

4. Make mistakes. It’s OK, but learn from them

God knows I’ve made my share of mistakes so I’ve learned a lot along the way.

Growing up with this simple mantra allowed me to take more risks and grow from each success and each failure.

This simple lesson taught me to assess what I learned so I can grow from it.

Check out my best-selling book available on Amazon

5. Embrace our differences

As one of 5 kids, we were each unique and she had the ability to make each of us feel special in our own way, embracing both our strengths and weaknesses.

This simple lesson taught us how to respect and embrace others and our differences

6. Take time for yourself. Self-care is not selfish

With 5 kids, I never did figure out how she found time for self-care, but when I think back, her self-care was time on the golf course with her dad, playing bingo with her sisters, or playing bridge with her friends.

She discovered simple pleasures that restored and rejuvenated her.

7. Nurture relationships regularly

It takes time and effort to build and staying healthy, loving relationships. Take time each day to:

Make that phone call to someone who needs to hear from you.Reach out, and send a handwritten note to make someone’s day.

It’s that simple. It cost nothing other than your time.
