Are you ready?
I’m inviting you to get a pad and paper to write down this simple step-by-step process of…
How To Design Your Very Own Personal Decluttering Challenge In 2022
1. Pick one area of your home you want to declutterThat is bothering you the most. That is impacting the quality of your daily life.
Example: Master Bedroom Closet
It takes you so much time to get ready.
You keep wearing the same clothes over and over because your closet is packed with clothes that don’t fit, that are outdated, and that are in need of repair.
It bothers you because it seems like you never have anything to wear.
Sound familiar?
Action step: Pick one area of your home that bothers you and list reasons “why”?2. Ask yourself “What does success looks like after this area is decluttered… after you’ve accomplished this big goal?”
Example: Master Bedroom Closet
When your master bedroom closet is decluttered, you will find it easy to locate the clothes you want when you want to wear them. You know those clothes fit you, look good on you and are in good repair. You no longer waste time looking for things and feeling like you have nothing to wear.
You might even say you love your closet!
Action step: Write down what success looks like when you have accomplished this big goal.
3. Ask yourself “How will you challenge yourself to accomplish this goal in that specific area?”
Example: Master Bedroom Closet
You will challenge yourself to get up 30-minutes earlier each day this week, try on every piece of clothing in your closet.Donate, consign, or discard the items that don’t fit, don’t look good, and don’t look like “you” anymore. You’ll then organize your closet so that you can find what you want when you want it.Decluttering tip: Keep your challenge simple and manageable.Break down the large projects into manageable chunks.
Action step: Write down how you will challenge yourself to accomplish this goal. Be very specific.4. Share your challenge with family and friends
This is the accountability piece of your decluttering challenge. It is critical to staying on track and staying motivated.
Example: Master Bedroom Closet
Action step: Share your written personal challenge with your spouse, kids, and friends. You will let them know your daily progress.

5. Make your personal challenge part of your daily routineTake before and after pictures. It’s motivating to see progress!Repetition helps form good habits that are sustainable.
Acknowledge yourself for sticking with it. Who knows, you might even start to miss the daily routine because you look forward to checking off more progress each day
Prove to yourself you’ve got this! You can, you are, and you will succeed at decluttering your home in 2022.
Action step: Document your daily progress and take before and after pictures.6. Use your personal decluttering challenge and accomplishments to inspire your family and friends
Your family and friends will see that you have done it and they will be inspired to do it too!
Action step: Write down who you would like to inspire and motivate to declutter by sharing your own decluttering challenge and success. When you personalize your decluttering challenge…When you design your own decluttering challenge…You’ll be far more empowered, inspired, and motivated because you have designed something that works for you that you deeply care about.

Decluttering in 2022? It doesn’t have to be perfect… Just start!
The Downsizing Designer
If you’re like most Americans, one of the top 3 resolutions for 2022 is to declutter and get organized.
But it’s now mid-January already and perhaps you haven’t even started.
This is sound familiar?
You’ve been too busy… with holidays, company, work, and you’re exhausted! You look around at all of the clutter and you get overwhelmed at the size of the task and you have no idea where or how to begin! You find yourself saying… “Even if I do declutter, my family will just mess it up again! So why bother?”
So then, you don’t start. You put it off another day another time… Again!
Even though you realize it’s having a huge impact on you, your family, your life because…
You can never find what you want when you need it.You’re constantly annoyed or frustrated with yourself or your loved ones. You can’t focus or think clearly. This is what clutter does to us. But then again you might want to give up because you find yourself saying… “My home will never be as perfect as my neighbors so why even try?”
Have you ever considered just how much having to be perfect and having to get it right sabotages your goal of decluttering ?Think about it this way…
There is no perfect time to start decluttering. There will probably never be a time in your life where your schedule is not busy.If you want to change this vicious cycle in 2022 and finally get decluttered and organized, begin telling yourself that it doesn’t have to be perfect and to just get started.
Once you realize that being perfect is a trap that stops you. It’s not real nor is it realistic. You just need to give yourself some slack, some grace and just get started!
Here Are A Few Ways That You Can Start Your Imperfect Decluttering Journey
#1 Realize you don’t have to finish it all in a day, a week, a weekend, or even a month.
Clutter has taken time to build up in your home and it will take time to declutter.
Start by decluttering 1 small area that bothers you the most:
Kitchen CounterDining Room TableWriting DeskYour CarPantry StorageWhen you finish decluttering 1 area you will realize it is possible. You’ll realize how good you feel about starting and seeing results. You’ll be inspired to declutter the next area.
#2 Stop buying into the trap that something is wrong with you if your house is not perfect… like your neighbors!
Likely your neighbor has had similar struggles with clutter but they might have learned which decluttering method works best for them, their personality, their lifestyle, and fits their busy schedule… and they’ve made regular decluttering a habit.
Decluttering is not a “one and done” process.
It takes work and forming good habits to make it happen, stay organized, and prevent it from reoccurring.
Your perfect neighbor is no different than you they might have just learned how to manage the clutter and make a habit of removing it regularly so they can stay organized and the clutter doesn’t build up.

#3 Focus on the end goalBreak your project down into smaller manageable time frames.
Take baby steps.
One day, one drawer, one closet at a time.… and it doesn’t have to be perfect, just get started! Get a jump start on your spring cleaning.

The post Start Decluttering Your Home Today first appeared on Design Services LTD.How to Make a New House YOUR Home
The Downsizing Designer
Have you recently moved into a new house and it still doesn’t feel like home?
Or
Maybe you bought a house someone else used to live in and you were having a hard time making it feel like your own home.
This is not unusual. I’ve heard it many times over the years as a designer, so I want to address it and make a few suggestions that will make you feel at home in your own home.
I’m not only addressing this as an Interior Designer, but also from the standpoint of someone who has recently moved myself, so I understand the importance of making your new house “YOURS”.
Perhaps some of this was also influenced by the fact that growing up, our family moved 9 different times and I always marveled at the fact that my mother was always able to make each of our houses a “home”. As I look back on that experience, I realize what she did was much of what I am sharing with you now.
Once you have moved in and unpacked most of your boxes, take time to focus on one room that would make the biggest difference for you and your family to really start feeling at “home”.
For purposes of this discussion, let’s focus on the family room.
1. Always start with a furniture floor plan that works best for you and your family… one that invites you to sit, read, talk, and relax.
2. Add an area rug to not only define that space, but also to add color, warmth, and texture.
3. Strategically place several lamps that not only function to serve a purpose, but add that warmth and coziness that invites you in.
This Lamp Makes Me Smile
4. Next, place those special pieces of accent furniture and accessories that are unique “you” … those pieces that you’ve collected over the years and make you smile just to look at them!
They will also likely remind you of a special time or experience you’ve had in your life.
This step is especially important to making your home feel like YOUR home because it is your personal stamp or signature.
5. Hang artwork that is meaningful to you and serves to help pull the room together via color, texture, theme, ambiance.
The right pieces of well-placed artwork also draw you into the room, inviting you to enjoy just being there.

A Few of My Favorite Things that Make Me Feel at Home
6. Personalize your bookcases and cabinets with a few well-chosen family photos and accessories that capture the essence of what “home” means to you.

7. Strategically place greenery around the room, perhaps one tall tree with white lights and also a few well selected green plants in beautiful pots.

8. Light the candles, turn on your favorite music, bake some fresh cookies, and pour a great cup of tea.
Often, we’re tempted to try to decorate the whole house at once which is overwhelming so it never really gets “done”.
So, if you want to start feeling “at home” in your own new home, I recommend trying this method of starting with the one room that would make the biggest difference for you and your family, surrounding yourself with things that make you comfortable and happy.
Make it a room you never want to leave …because you are finally at home!
Enjoy “YOUR” home!

8 Reasons Why Many Baby Boomers Fail At Decluttering
The Downsizing Designer
As I was preparing to write this blog, I originally thought I might have 3 good reasons why many baby boomers might fail at decluttering, but the more I started to think about it, there are many more than just 3. I’m going to share with you 8 reasons baby boomers often try over and over again to declutter their homes and get organized, but get distracted, frustrated, and end up never finishing the job.
This makes us feel like we have failed. But it’s a new year and this year you’re determined to succeed at decluttering and getting organized so you can find what you need when you need it.
But before you jump in… again…
Wouldn’t it be helpful to understand the reasons…· Why you were not successful decluttering and organizing in the past?· Why you never finish decluttering so you could get organized?· What it was that held you back?Once you answer these questions, you can avoid the same mistakes and set yourself up for success so you can finally succeed at decluttering and getting organized in 2022.
#1 Reason: Not having a decluttering and organizing plan. As the saying goes “if you fail to plan you plan to fail”
Decluttering is not easy. It can be overwhelming, frustrating, and it’s easy to get distracted and off track.
Because decluttering is a big project, it’s important to know where, when, and how to start.
Break it up into smaller quick “wins”. Start by decluttering a drawer, a shelf, or a countertop.
#2 Reason: Confusing decluttering with rearranging/re-organizing
Decluttering means removing and reducing stuff, getting rid of it, letting go of things that you no longer want, need, or use.
Re-organizing/rearranging things and putting them into pretty containers is not decluttering. It’s a temporary fix that makes you feel good at the moment, but that doesn’t last for too long because you haven’t reduced the amount of your stuff.
#3 Reason: Not consistently allocating time and energy to decluttering
If you don’t put time aside each day, each week to accomplish your project, likely you will not succeed.
Put it on your calendar. Schedule it as if it were an important appointment because it is!
Then, put in the hard work that it takes on a consistent basis.
#4 Reason: Not knowing “why” you want to declutter and get organized
Why does decluttering matter to you? Why is it important for you to get organized?
How is it impacting your life, your relationships?
When you spend time and effort looking for things it’s frustrating! When you get into arguments about clutter or when you yell at your kids about their messes, it’s hurtful! When you’re ashamed of how messy your house is and you don’t invite people to your house because of that, it’s embarrassing! When you know your “why”, you’ll be motivated. You’ll be much more determined to stay with it when you get discouraged and want to quit.
#5 Reason: Not knowing what to do with all your stuff
When you create your plan…
Decide where you will donate, where you will consign, and who in your circle of family and friends will want any of your things and will be willing to remove it from your home when you declutter. It’s important to not let your clutter sit around in bags, boxes, or bins. Put them in your car or in the trash.
#6 Reason: Not knowing where to put the stuff that you DO keep
Everything you keep needs a proper “home”, a logical place where you know where it is so you can put your hands on it when you need it and so you will know where to return it when you’re finished using it.
This is the organizing part of your project. Make sure you have removed and gotten rid of what you don’t want, need or use in that area before you start organizing.
You’ll be surprised at just how much space you actually have!
#7 Reason: Not being clear about which decluttering method works best for you, your personality, and your schedule
There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to decluttering.
Don’t Let Another Year Go By!This is Your Solution to Start Decluttering
For example:
The Burst method (my favorite)When you allot even 15 minutes of highly focused time, think about how much you can accomplish when you start repeating that method multiple times each week. You would definitely see progress.
Or
The Category MethodThis decluttering method is used for particular categories that you might have excess amounts of. For example, shoes might be your nemesis! This decluttering method allows you to focus on just one category so you don’t get distracted and you can make good progress.
#8 Reason: Getting bogged down with sentimental items
If you get stuck or stopped when you are decluttering your sentimental items, stop what you’re doing and schedule it for another time when it might be a little easier for you emotionally.
Start decluttering in another area so that you can experience success and see results.

5 Tips: How to Get Your Spouse on Board When Decluttering Your Home
The Downsizing Designer
Have you ever found yourself saying…
“It’s so much easier to declutter and get organized when my spouse is not around.”
Or
“He doesn’t really help, he just complains or gets in my way”
As the Downsizing Designer, I can’t tell you how often I hear these kinds of comments because decluttering is an emotional conversation. So, I often respond by saying, “Wouldn’t it be great if you could find ways to take on that big project together?” ….
Not only to lighten the load and get a lot more done but in the end, you both reap the rewards of combining your efforts so that your home is:
Less clutteredMore organizedMore peacefulAnd in the process of decluttering and organizing together, you learn a lot about each other.
Why you hold onto certain things. Why it’s hard to let go of specific things. And why you accumulated so much in the first place.Understanding the reasons, you hold onto things will ultimately allow you to make lasting changes so that you don’t continue to accumulate more in the future.
I will tell you though, that I do get pushback when I suggest that couples find ways to work together on decluttering and organizing their home instead of trying to do it all alone and then resenting it.
If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to finally declutter your home and get organized in 2022, why not make that a shared goal so that you can both enjoy the process and the benefits?
Having worked closely with many couples over the years on the design and decluttering of their homes, I have frequently found myself in the crosshairs, so I’ve developed my…

3. Find common ground and share your vision. Have your partner share their vision for life after clutter.
Develop a shared vision for a simpler life without clutter.

Why that item is so difficult to let go of.Sentimental attachment?Fear they might need or want it later?Regret about how much money they spent on that item? And at other times, the process can be so overwhelming that one of you might want to give up.
Stand by each other at times like this and show your support.Remind each other of why you want to declutter.Keep in mind your vision for life after clutter.Working on this project together is an opportunity to work as a team to help each other push through barriers so you can accomplish this big goal together.

The post Need Help Decluttering In The New Year? first appeared on Design Services LTD.A Checklist for Finding The “Right Size” Home
The Downsizing DesignerNot all baby boomers are downsizing.
That might sound funny coming from me, the Downsizing Designer, but what is happening is that baby boomers are trying to figure out what the “right size” house is for them at this stage of their lives.
After all, lives change, people change, and lifestyles change.Once the kids move out of the house, your life and lifestyle changes.
You suddenly have more time and freedom.
You start to ask yourself:
If you really need all of the space in your big home.If you want to spend your weekends taking care of the big yard.If it’s time to start doing some of the things you put off i.e., travel, golf, time with grandkids and etc.And yet, you’re also pulled in another direction…
What about when the kids come home for the holidays?
Won’t they need to have their own room again?
Perhaps you do need a guestroom or two for when the kids come home or when you have overnight guests, but you start to ask, “Do you really need four bedrooms or could you make do with two or three?”
These are just a few of the questions baby boomers start asking themselves when they become empty-nesters. It’s a transition time in their lives.
Maybe you don’t need to downsize. Maybe you just need to “right size” … to find a type of house that works best for you now at this stage of your life.So the question becomes: How do you know what the “right size” home is?Many of you who follow me know that a few years ago, I downsized from a very large home to my tiny jewel box apartment in Philadelphia.
While I thoroughly enjoyed that experience of living in a small apartment in the city, after a few years I realized that as much as I love entertaining, I was missing:
A dedicated guestroom for my overnight guestsA real dining roomA much smaller walkable community near the waterOnce I decided I need a little more space for my lifestyle, I created a checklist of all the things I was asking myself to discern what I wanted, didn’t want in my new home. The result of this assessment tool was amazing!
I’m now living in the perfect “right size” home in Historic New Castle Delaware.
Because this assessment tool was so helpful to me, I created a free printable PDF that you can easily download and use yourself if you are in the process of looking for the “right size” home.
