Progress!! (AKA, My Busy Spring Publishing Schedule!)
This was one of those weekends where I didn't get a single new word down on paper. However, I kicked ass on editing, formatting and working with my cover artist. And the weather was absolutely gorgeous - sunny, with highs in the low 70's - so I decided to get out and enjoy it. There'll be plenty of time for drafting new words when the rain and gloom roll back in at the end of the week.
Just FYI, here's my tentative publishing schedule for this spring:
Complications (aka, Courtland Chronicles #3) is ready to roll as of February 1st!
The Arrangement (Courtland #4) will be out on or around March 1st.
Flawless (Irresistible Attraction #4) is scheduled for April 15th from Riptide Publishing. (Yes, Steve finally gets his HEA!)
As for the fifth and last Courtland book, Triad...I'm doing my damnedest to get it out in May.
I'm also working on a paperback edition of the first 3 Courtland books - By Chance, Strictly Business and Complications. Keep your eyes peeled for a giveaway here on Goodreads!
Whew! I'm tired from just typing all that. Guess I should stop kicking myself for not getting enough done, huh? :)

Hot guys, fast cars!
For all of you who've been waiting for Connor's best friend Steve (of Priceless, Doubtless and Fearless fame) to get his love story, it's on its way next month!
Steve Campbell used to be a player, until a mid-life crisis opened his eyes to his long-repressed love for Connor, his soon-to-be-married best friend and business partner. Coming out at thirty-eight means learning how to date all over again, and this time, Steve’s not willing to settle for empty one-night stands. He wants the real thing.
Gil Alvarez has never had it easy, struggling through childhood and rejected by his family for a body that didn’t match who he was inside. A skilled driver and mechanic, he’s working hard to make his auto shop a success. The last thing he needs is a rich white guy in a candy-apple-red Ferrari tempting him, but Steve’s ready smile and easygoing manner prove irresistible.
One brief, intimate encounter leaves them both hungry for more. Gil’s not ashamed of who he is, but he’s terrified that Steve will reject him—or worse—when he discovers what Gil can’t find the courage to tell him.
Now available for pre-order at Riptide Publishing!

I don't normally do this kind of thing anymore...
By which I mean, shameless plugging, but I got a really nice advance review for Flawless yesterday at 3 Chicks After Dark!
The lovely Janette had this to say:
"Cat Grant is an terrific storyteller, and she does an amazing job of conveying changing emotions, inner struggle and character growth without being overt. Ultimately each (character) has something that makes him ideal for the other. Watching these guys try to cope was riveting – things they said and did, decisions they made together or separately. I enjoyed it tremendously..."
YAYYY!
Flawless will be out on April 22nd, but you can pre-order it now at Riptide Publishing!

Vroom, vroom!
Thanks for joining me in my week-long celebration of my new novella Flawless, the fourth and final book in my Irresistible Attraction series.
This is the story everyone’s been waiting for (I hope, I hope!) – Steve Campbell finally getting his happy ending, with a tough, sweet and very unusual guy named Gil. Leave a comment to win your choice of ebooks from my backlist, or a chance to name a character in my upcoming Bannon’s Gym series, featuring a hot lineup of mixed martial arts fighters!
I try to set a new challenge for myself with each new book, but I never thought I’d end up researching auto racing and Italian sports cars. Luckily, a good friend of mine is an absolute auto racing fanatic, so I had a go-to person for all my questions. Researching stuff on the net is one thing, but having someone with actual expertise to consult makes all the difference.
First, I had to decide what kind of car to give Steve. I’d mentioned in previous books that he drove a candy-apple red Ferrari convertible, so that narrowed down my choices. Then I started looking at photos, and the F430 Spider leaped right out at me. I mean, look at it! It’s got Steve’s name written all over it.
The car actually becomes a character of its own over the course of the story. It’s what initially brings Steve and Gil together, and they spend a lot of time in it (and on it!).
As for the racing part, I’m lucky to live a few miles away from one of the most well-known race tracks in the country – Laguna Seca. There really is an Italian auto racing club that meets there every few months, and yes, I went out to watch. It’s an exciting experience, sitting in the stands listening to those engines rev up. I’d never understood the appeal of auto racing until that day, but now I’m an avid fan.

Now climbing the best seller lists!
My hot new novella Flawless is doing exceptionally well on Amazon, and it's just hit the best seller list over on All Romance ebooks.
For those of you who are still on the fence, (LOL!) here's an excerpt to whet your collective appetites:
Gil ordered the rib eye, medium rare, while Steve went for the prime rib, bloody, and a bottle of his favorite cabernet.
The wine seemed to be helping Gil unwind, if his half slump against the booth’s plush leather upholstery was any clue. “The waiter called you by name. How many times have you been here?”
“My business partner and I usually come by when we have something big to celebrate.” Or we used to, anyway.
“Business partner?” Gil’s eyebrow arched. “I thought you were just a dabbler.”
Damn. Only half a glass, and he was already letting things slip. Common sense told him to own up to the truth. “Also known as a lab geek.”
“A lab geek with designer clothes and a fancy sports car?” Gil laughed and reached for his wine. “Man, am I in the wrong business.”
Speaking of . . . “How’s business at the shop?”
“Same crap, different week.” Gil shrugged. “I should’ve walked up to Market and posted more handbills. I don’t get a lot of drive-by traffic where I am.”
“You looked pretty busy this afternoon.”
“The Fiat’s mine. I’ve been fixing it up for the last six months or so.”
Steve smiled and refilled their glasses. Maybe this was the key to drawing Gil out. “Guess you’ll be glad to have functioning wheels again, huh?”
Gil snorted. “I get around just fine on the bus. Besides, it still needs a ton of work. I’ll probably sell it once I’m done.”
“Then what? Use the proceeds to move the shop to a better location?” Careful, now. Don’t want to offend him again. “You’d attract more business up near Valencia.”
“That’d be great—soon as I win the lottery.” Gil’s smile told him he hadn’t overstepped this time, thank God. “I’ll never make that kind of money restoring cars. I’m lucky to get back what I put into them.” He fidgeted, glancing around the room again. “Looks like a pretty popular place for date night.”
“Actually, this is the first time I’ve brought a date here. Or even had a date in . . . a while.”
“Yeah?” Gil leaned forward, his face bathed in the muted golden light from the lamp above their table. It made his eyes look positively liquid. “Why the dry spell? I would’ve thought somebody like you’d have guys lined up around the block.”
He laughed. “Not hardly. In fact, up until a few months ago, I was dating women.”
Silence crackled as Gil studied him, then stared into his glass. “What happened? You got bored and decided to check out how the other half screws?”
“Not really. I, um . . .” How to phrase it? This wasn’t something he could just toss out there as if it didn’t mean anything. “At the risk of sounding pretentious, I had an epiphany. Realized far too late how I really felt about a close friend. It made me face a lot of stuff I’d been repressing. Including my attraction to men.”
Gil huffed out a chuckle, but a hint of wariness had crept into his eyes. “So I’m your guinea pig, huh? Your training wheels? Whatever you want to call it.”
“That’s not how I’d—” But of course, the waiter would have to choose that moment to bring their food. Steve tried to drum up some small talk, for all the good it did—Gil just shrugged and made monosyllabic replies. At least he seemed to be enjoying his steak. He devoured it like it was the first decent dinner he’d had in months, while Steve picked at his prime rib, trying to figure out how to smooth over his latest gaffe.
“How about dessert?” was the best gambit he could come up with when the waiter returned to take away their plates.
“Nah, I’m fine. I should be getting back anyway.” In fact, Gil was already sliding out of the booth. “Got to hit the men’s room. I’ll meet you out front.”
Strained silence followed them back to Gil’s place, continuing even after Steve pulled up to the curb and cut the engine. Fuck this. He wasn’t about to let their first real date go up in flames. “Listen, whatever I said this time, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Gil reached for the door latch. “Thanks for dinner. I had a nice time.”
“Then why’re you practically jumping out of my car again?” He considered hitting the lock, but—bad idea. That wouldn’t put Gil at ease. “Will you please just tell me what’s wrong?”
The passenger’s side door swung open. Gil eyed his escape route, then sighed and slumped back in his seat. “Look at you—your clothes, this car. The restaurant. That’s your world.” He gestured at his own clothes. “I don’t fit in.”
Steve laughed. “I wasn’t born driving a Ferrari. I’m a kid from the sticks, just like you.”
Gil shot him a “yeah, right” look. “I still don’t get it. Why are you wasting your time with me? You could have anybody.”
“You think sleeping around’ll make me happy? Because I’ve tried that, and it didn’t.”
“I’ve tried bi guys too, and you’re all the same. You want your little adventures in Gay Town, but once they’re over, you’re gone. I’m not heading down that road again.”
“I don’t blame you. Sounds like the worst vacation ever.”
Gil let out a strangled half-snort. “Stop it.”
“What’s the matter, don’t you like laughing? Because I like hearing you laugh.” Steve slid a hand onto Gil’s shoulder—and amazingly, Gil relaxed under his touch, tension slowly draining from hard muscles. His fingers toyed with the edge of Gil’s collar, combing through the ends of his soft, sleek hair. “I get the feeling you haven’t laughed nearly enough lately.”
Gil tilted his head and sighed. “You know this’ll never work, right?”
“Says who?”
“Anybody with half a brain.”
He leaned in and cupped Gil’s cheek, pulse quickening as Gil’s warm, wine-scented breath floated over his skin. “I don’t care what anybody else thinks.”

To conclude, here's a little chat with our main protagonist, Steve Campbell…
Q: Hey Steve. When we left you at the end of Doubtless, you were just starting to come to terms with your attraction to men. Has it been a difficult adjustment?
Steve: Not difficult, so much as . . . interesting. (Laughs.) Coming out at thirty-eight’s not something I’d ever dreamed was in the cards for me, especially since . . .
Q: Since it came about after discovering how you really felt about your best friend Connor?
Steve: Um, yeah. (Fidgets.)
Q: How are you and Connor getting along these days?
Steve: Fine, aside from the usual headaches at work. Conn’s a friend, and he always will be. He and Wes are very happy together – in fact, they got married in New York this past Christmas.
Q: And we understand you brought along a new friend of your own?
Steve: (Big smile.) His name’s Gil. He’s quite special.
Q: How did you two meet?
Steve: My Ferrari stalled. He got it started for me. In fact, he fixes Italian sports cars for a living.
Q: That’s convenient – having a boyfriend who can fix your expensive toys!
Steve: (Laughs.) Yeah, tell me about it!
Q: So, you two are officially an item?
Steve: Well, we’re not planning to take out a full-page ad in the Advocate, but . . . yeah, we’re pretty happy. He’s not the kind of guy I’d ever imagined myself with, but . . .
Q: What kind of guy’s that?
Steve: (Quirky smile.) You’ll have to ask him yourself.

He’s not the kind of guy I’d ever imagined myself with, but . . .

Pinch me! Aka, I have no idea...
How this happened, but Flawless is right behind KA Mitchell's new book on Amazon's GLBT Best Seller list!
Wow! Thanks to all of you who helped put it there, and to Riptide's magical marketing coordinator, Stephanie Grober, for getting the word out.
And now, back to wondering if this is really all a dream... :)

I didn't write it for you.
For the most part, I stay out of discussions of my books here on GR, unless I know the people involved and am fairly sure they wouldn't mind me putting in my two cents. I've had way too many instances in the past of readers getting all huffy about me commenting, because "Goodreads is our space and authors need to keep out!"
Fair enough. But this blog is my space, and I have a thing or two I need to vent about.
When I started writing my trans* romance Flawless, I had a feeling readers would find it polarizing. But at the time I had no idea if this was because there aren't that many trans* romances available, or, by extension, because readers simply didn't want to read them. I got my answer to the latter last week, when Flawless started climbing the GLBT romance best seller lists at both Amazon and All Romance ebooks.
Still, I've stumbled across a few reviews here (and elsewhere) that have made steam come out my ears - including one (from a reader who shall remain nameless) that slammed me for not deconstructing gender.
Uh, whut?
Oh, and Dear Reviewer, saying I only put in the car-racing stuff to show my trans* character Gil Alvarez is "really a guy" has to be the most trans*-ignorant statement I've ever heard.
Bad, bad me for researching this book by talking to actual trans* folk, when I obviously should've been reading a gender studies textbook.
Meet Tyrrell Morris - the inspiration and walking treasure trove of research for this story. If I wrote her actual life story, everyone would laugh. No one would ever believe one person could have earned a doctorate in aeronautical engineering, served as a commander in the US Navy, worked for JPL in Pasadena, run her own auto shop, and owned - and driven! - a string of racing cars.
Oh, and in the midst of all this, she transitioned from male to female.
Tyrrell is my best friend and life partner. I wrote Flawless for her. Because she asked me to. Because there are very few trans* romances available, and even fewer that get that living as a trans* person is not all about being trans*. Sure, it's about living your life in a body that reflects who you are inside, but it's also about that not being a big deal.
Gil Alvarez, like all the real-life trans* people I spoke to, just wants to be accepted for who he is. Liking fast cars isn't what makes him a guy. He was a guy from the day he was born, just like Tyrrell was always a woman.
But being trans* is not what defines either of them.
