To conclude, here's a little chat with our main protagonist, Steve Campbell…

Q: Hey Steve. When we left you at the end of Doubtless, you were just starting to come to terms with your attraction to men. Has it been a difficult adjustment?

Steve: Not difficult, so much as . . . interesting. (Laughs.) Coming out at thirty-eight’s not something I’d ever dreamed was in the cards for me, especially since . . .

Q: Since it came about after discovering how you really felt about your best friend Connor?

Steve: Um, yeah. (Fidgets.)

Q: How are you and Connor getting along these days?

Steve: Fine, aside from the usual headaches at work. Conn’s a friend, and he always will be. He and Wes are very happy together – in fact, they got married in New York this past Christmas.

Q: And we understand you brought along a new friend of your own?

Steve: (Big smile.) His name’s Gil. He’s quite special.

Q: How did you two meet?

Steve: My Ferrari stalled. He got it started for me. In fact, he fixes Italian sports cars for a living.

Q: That’s convenient – having a boyfriend who can fix your expensive toys!

Steve: (Laughs.) Yeah, tell me about it!

Q: So, you two are officially an item?

Steve: Well, we’re not planning to take out a full-page ad in the Advocate, but . . . yeah, we’re pretty happy. He’s not the kind of guy I’d ever imagined myself with, but . . .

Q: What kind of guy’s that?

Steve: (Quirky smile.) You’ll have to ask him yourself.

Steve Campbell used to be a player, until a mid-life crisis opened his eyes to his long-repressed love for Connor, his soon-to-be-married best friend and business partner. Coming out at thirty-eight means learning how to date all over again, and this time, Steve’s not willing to settle for empty one-night stands. He wants the real thing.

Gil Alvarez has never had it easy, struggling through childhood and rejected by his family for a body that didn’t match who he was inside. A skilled driver and mechanic, he’s working hard to make his auto shop a success. The last thing he needs is a rich white guy in a candy-apple-red Ferrari tempting him, but Steve’s ready smile and easygoing manner prove irresistible.

One brief, intimate encounter leaves them both hungry for more. Gil’s not ashamed of who he is, but he’s terrified that Steve will reject him—or worse—when he discovers what Gil can’t find the courage to tell him.
