What was that! Heart and Soul #8sunday #snippetsunday

This is in Rowan's POV.

She carefully maneuvered her
way down the dirt road where the foliage threatened to overtake the path,
confirming her suspicions that no one had driven down here for quite some
while. She glanced on either side of the road as she drove slowly, the worn
gravel crunching beneath her tires. A flash of white in peripheral vision made
her riveted her gaze to the front where a woman stood in the road.
"Holy crap!"
She slammed on the breaks and swerved, knowing she was going to hit the woman no matter her attempts to avoid her. She careened into the brushes and slammed to halt, her seatbelt tightening against her and jarring her back against her seat. She sat there squeezing the steering wheel. The only audible sound was her heart pounding in her ears. She whirled around in her seat to look toward the road. Had she hit the woman?

She hadn't heard the dreaded thud of soft tissue colliding against unforgiving metal. Her fingers fumbled to undo the seatbelt before she threw open her door. Swiping away the foliage, as she hurried up the incline to the dirt road. Dread laced its way up her spine threatening to choke her. Her gaze frantically searched the area for the woman. She jogged to the other side of the road. If she had hit the lady, maybe she'd been thrown in the opposite direction.
Nothing. Nada. No sign of anyone. Her gaze traveled back at her car as another horrific image came to mind. but she had to know. With heavy steps, she went back to investigate. She crouched down on her knees and took a deep breath before she quickly glanced under her vehicle.

I saw a sign… Heart and Soul #8sunday #snippetsunday

About the snippet: This is in Rowan's POV. Though Rowan realizes places and scenery could have changed over the years, she drives her car down the main part of town just to see if something will pop out as familiar from her dreams.

She turned off a road where the
pines and brush had grown with wild abandonment without corporations clearing
it away for housing or whatever else their imaginations could conjure up for
zoning.
She slowed her vehicle when she came to a sign partially hidden behind a bush that was doing its best to consume it. She parked on the shoulder of the road and stepped out of her car to have a closer look. The sign appeared hand painted and worn from the elements, but she could make out that it was pointing toward the right to what was supposed to be the road to Lake Moor. The potholed path overgrown with foliage indicated no one had traveled this way in a while. Maybe the lake had dried up and had been forgotten. There was only one way to find out. She slipped her hand into her jean pocket to retrieve her cell phone and glance at the time. She roughly had two hours before she had to head back to the coffeehouse to start work. She hurried to her car, slid inside.

He had hit on her too but she put him in his place and they'd been friends ever since.
"I like Rowan and I don't want you to screw it up. You're her boss," she reminded him as if he could forget. "You can't date her."
"I'm not dating her."
Katie narrowed her eyes. "Good, don't." She pushed away from the bar and stood. "Don't sleep with her either."
"Good Lord, can we stop talking about this now?"

"I don't bed every pretty woman I meet," he said defensively. He may have in the past but in the last few years, he'd changed his ways. He was more selective. He even had an adult relationship that lasted more than a few months. The last one had made it to four months to be exact until said girlfriend decided she wanted a boyfriend who was a rock star and not one that had been a rock star. So what was Katie complaining about?
She took a seat at the counter. "I've been working with you from the beginning."

"What—No! Jesus, Katie, I just met the woman a day ago."
"So you want to sleep with her but haven't gotten around to it."
"Of course not." Even though his voice seemed to say just the opposite.

He glanced out the front window facing the street and couldn't help but notice Rowan's car wasn't parked at the curb. "Did Rowan happen to stop in this morning before she left?" he asked as casually as he could, wondering if she'd told Katie where she was going.
Katie's fingers paused, her hand poised over the blackboard as she turned toward him. "No."
The way she said that one little word made him think he hadn't pulled off the casual conversation.
"Was she supposed to check in?" she asked, and he didn't miss the scrutiny in her voice.
He strode over to the other side of the bar where a tray of clean cups waited to be put away on the shelf beneath the counter. "No, but if she had, I thought maybe I could show her around town. You know, help her get acquainted with where things are located."
Katie stared at him with a raised brow.

"Great." He hoped he sounded at least a little pleased his father would be visiting. He would have preferred to have the band here without his father trying to intimidate Rowan into giving them a spot. His father did like to have his way. He made a mental note to warn Rowan about his father. It was only fair that she knew what a pain in the arse his father could be and not to give him any favors. Either the band was good enough to be added to the event schedule, or they weren't.
"I'll see you on soon," his father drawled with enthusiasm that made Maverick cringe.
"Can't wait," he murmured even though his father had already ended the call.
He slipped the phone into his pocket and headed downstairs.

"Hilarious, boy. I hope she's good at her job and you didn't hire her on her looks alone." He chuckled as if he voiced a funny joke.
"She's very capable." He wasn't going to discuss Rowan's attributes with his father.
"Not a looker then," he said with a sigh of disappointment. "Probably for the best."
"I'll let Rowan know, you'll be sending a band our way," he said completely ignoring his father's last comment.
"I'll be flying there with them."
