The Exam Before Phoenix

Feel free to write your stories and give names to the artworks. Also, you're not limited to just writing stories; you can draw your own art, compose music, make toys, saw with a jigsaw, scratch with a nail, and translate into other languages for practice (and never simplify the text when translating!). And show us what you've created :)
The Exam Before Phoenix
Sherd paused in one of the parks, shifting his gaze to the Black Tower where the conquerors remained.
The golden whore of Raihm had undoubtedly stayed on the throne, shimmering in Sherd's favorite shade of gold. The new overlord probably wasn't perched on the edge of the table with arms crossed anymore, but had likely returned behind it, just as when Sherd first entered the throne room.
And somewhere, Raihm had settled in. Sherd couldn't imagine where. The shapeshifter had stood aside throughout the meeting, completely off the Sherd-Katana line, but the former king's counselor had no doubt that if danger suddenly threatened Raihm's new employer, he'd be there in an instant. Sherd had no intention of attacking the new overlord; he was simply assessing the situation out of habit.
Sherd felt an involuntary respect for the Dzirovian Raihm, who had managed to earn the centuries-long love of Kan, the battle wings, and almost everyone else, and now remained in the same position under the new regime.
Because Sherd believed that abilities should be rewarded.
And Raihm was very capable. Sherd had never understood why Raihm didn't take the Phoenix exam and become a golden winged one.
Once, during yet another debate in Kan's council, Raihm suddenly took Sherd's side. After the Council, the aristocratic schemer approached the shapeshifter and said:
"If you ever want to take the Phoenix exam, know that I'll support you."
Raihm, as always, flashed a dazzling smile and replied:
"Thank you, Sherd, but I think that in my exam before Phoenix, your support won't help me."
"You're wrong to think so," said Sherd, mentally noting Raim's Dzirovian speech pattern – 'exam before Phoenix' was what Dzirovian assassins called the judgment after death – but he didn't correct him, "I can easily become the chairman of any commission."
"At my exam, there won't be any commission, only Phoenix."
Sherd had nodded respectfully then, assuming Raihm was from some proud clan that adhered to their own wild code, which Phoenix was supposed to evaluate after the assassin's death.
And now Sherd pondered, recalling both that old conversation and the recent one in the Throne Room. Even then, Raihm had known about the coup and had meant the real god-Phoenix. Did that mean the coup had been in preparation for several centuries? And no one noticed? No one? That's impossible!

A Small Mistake
"What? You call this a forest, do you? 'We'll appear in a forest, with lots of birds and mice,' you said. My head nearly split open! How did you calculate this?" The she-cat struggled to pull her head free from between concrete slabs.
"Don't screech so, Reseda! Or my head will split open.
I think I knocked it when we landed..." The tom cat looked around, dazed.
"Don't screech? Don't screech?!" Reseda finally freed herself. "Who calculated the jump? You did! Whose fault is it that we had to break through concrete with our heads? Yours! Oh, he hit himself! You..."
"Oh, kitties!" a child's voice rang out.
Reseda turned and shot a disgruntled look at the couple with the smiling child.
"Let's run already! Stop lollygagging!" Reseda hissed. "If the Malevolents reach the Station, there won't be any of these human kittens left, nor any kitties!"
"Yes, I'm coming, I'm coming..." The tom shook his head once more and dashed after his partner. "How could I have made such a mistake? Ah! I dripped milk on the formula! I told you not to put the bowl on my desk!"
"Of course, now it's my fault!"
"Alright, don't grumble! It was just a small mistake, after all!"

On Reading, Writing, and Literary Competence
You know, there are certain books on specific topics that, once you've read them, make you feel like there's no point in discussing that subject with people who haven't. Perhaps that's what truly defines a must-read. I usually consider must-reads to be books of universal human importance, like "Ubyr," "The Eternal Call," "Personal Happiness," or "Branches."
Take "The Amusing Bible" by Leo Taxil, for instance. It might not seem like a must-read at first glance. You could read it or not; it doesn't necessarily define you. But if you're discussing the Bible and faith without having read Taxil, well... please don't do it with me. For me, it represents a necessary level of competence required to discuss the Bible. If you've read Taxil's "The Amusing Bible" and "The Amusing Gospel," and you have the arguments to challenge a trained seminarian, then we can talk about Christianity. Until then, I can't consider your words logical or authoritative in any way.
It's as if some books inherently represent a level of erudition.
That was just a preamble.
I recently got around to reading Stephen King's "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft." It's not a textbook, of course. It's subjective advice to writers from a writer, along with some memoir elements.
I have a positive view of King. I like how he writes. Not all of his plots resonate with me, but then again, I don't connect with every plot even from geniuses. In his book, he categorizes writers into successful commercialers (i.e., bad writers), competent writers, good writers, and great writers.
For me, King is a good writer. And in my opinion, being a good writer is the highest tier of writerhood. To be a great writer, you need the motivation to be one. Moreover, those recognized as great are usually the good writers of their time who simply stood the test of time.
For me, Shakespeare and Homer aren't great even today. But Steinbeck is great. So is Harper Lee. And Beecher Stowe. And there's a whole constellation of ordinary Soviet writers who are undiscovered greats: Pavel Amnuel, Ivan Yefremov, Stanislav Rodionov, Valentina Oseyeva, Adamov Jr., Anatoly Ivanov. Natasha Ilyina too, thanks to her "General Pause," although I personally prefer her other books. But that one's the great.
Anyway, after being inundated with mediocre books lately, reading King was like balm for my eyes. As always, for me.
Judging by this book, it's just a subjective coincidence. He writes at a pace and with emphases that I enjoy. Yes, I believe this is how one should write. This is good writing.
The book was written in the late '90s, and I've only gotten to it now. It was mentioned in another book — and you know I'm obsessive about reading every book mentioned in a book (and I hate writers who mention books in their books! I mainly mention my own books or fictional ones. Yes, because I care about my readers. And if I do mention a book, I genuinely believe it's worth reading, in case there's a maniac like me among my readers) — "The Perfect Crime" by the admin of the "Self-Publishing Pearls" group (a book by someone who lambasts successful commercialers was worth reading to me). So I finally decided to read it. I was sure King, at least, wouldn't be dreary. And I was right.
This isn't Nikolai Konstantinovich Gay's "Literary Artistry" or Arnaudov's "Psychology of Literary Creation," but I won't be able to seriously discuss with writers who haven't read it what makes a good book — unless they're among the greats, of course. The greats, yes, they can get away with not reading it. Because, as I said, they have different motivations.
Of course, where it concerns practice — remove adverbs, write "he said-she said" — that applies to English style and doesn't suit us. Because in Slavic languages, it sounds awful. Yes, folks, you've just gotten used to castrated, terrible translations of English fiction, and your brain has shriveled. Humans are such beasts; they get used to everything. But that doesn't negate the objective wretchedness. The thing is, your imagination also shrivels from poor narrative. But you don't notice it.
However, the approach, the principle, the reasoning — I'd like to see more followers of this approach. Because then there would be more good writers.
I also appreciated the book for its honesty and sincerity.
And it contains the main thing that wealthy writers often keep quiet about: how he became rich while remaining a writer. Because I know how commercialers get rich, and that has nothing to do with being writers.
So, it's a familiar editor at a major publishing house. Yes, yes, good book, blah blah, previous stories, portfolio, but the first half-million dollars came from a familiar editor at a publishing house that sold the rights for half a million bucks.
If in Russia it's publication in the "Znamya" magazine — yeah, somehow it turns out that when I start digging into the literary path of a writer who managed to become famous while remaining a writer, there's always "Znamya" magazine in the anamnesis — then in the West, it's always a familiar editor.
In general, "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft" is a must-read for writers. Readers might find it a bit boring unless, of course, you love King and find his memoirs and thoughts interesting.

"You claim that everyone is equal, yet you only associate with them," Golden Maiden said, shaking her head towards the Five. "You fly off with them, lead them to the Tower, and visit them in the evenings! I cook just as well as Sharizat, and I read no less! Do we not deserve your attention?"
Ladzoy let out a nervous smirk, his honey eyes darkening as they fixed on the student. He was ready to respond, but Edos warmly placed a hand in front of his friend, stopping him.
"So you don't want to, Talayla," said Edos.
He smiled his usual sunny and bright smile, stood up easily, and surveyed the class.
"Don't want to? I'm simply not invited to all these gatherings! If they stand and laugh at something, and when I approach, they fall silent. I've asked Sard several times where their party is, and he always says it's not a party! Of course, then I hear them sitting in a room laughing! And the music! And you say I don't want that?!"
The girl was breathless with indignation.
"You don't want to," Edos repeated, "when we were clearing the rubble in locked rooms, you said to do it without you. When we flew southeast to turn waves into rivers, you said you were fine in the capital. When we flew to clean up trash on Tamatis, you said trash was outside your interests. So it's not that you don't deserve it, you just don't want it. And Ladzoy goes with them along Kan-Dziru to clean up trash. They meet to discuss the cleanup. You'd be bored at their parties. And you'd have nothing to discuss with them. And they go to the Tower to report what they've greened, where they've cleaned. There too..." Edos smiled warmly and sparklingly, "is a Cleaner."
Many in the class smiled involuntarily.
"And if I don't want to engage in all that, does that make me worse than the others?"
Ladzoy made a barely perceptible movement, intending to respond again. Edos, without looking at him, squeezed his shoulder.
"We have no hierarchy of comparison. But you have nothing to do with those who want to engage in all that. You'd be bored with them, and they with you," Edos replied.
Ladzoy nodded enthusiastically in agreement, smiling predatorily.

"How many more and whom do I need to kill to earn the right to ask for all the townspeople to be expelled?" Ladzoy looked after the students and turned his gaze to Edos.
Golden Wing laughed warmly and gently shook his shoulder.
"Ladzoy, just wait a bit, we'll set everything up and transfer you to the best planet of Kan-Dziru for the best! Everyone there will be just like you. Or do you want us to put you to work with the best right now?"
"No. This is my world, and it's mine to clean. I don't want to walk on swept paths. I want all paths to be swept."

Short stories
I've been working on editing 'Elohim - is a plural' in Bulgarian. For some reason, it's going very slowly compared to yesterday's 'Love with hazelnut Eyes.' I keep editing and editing, and bam, only six pages done. The volume of 'Love' and 'Elohim' is roughly the same. I've hit some sort of sludge, which happens sometimes. I hate it. But 'Love with hazelnut Eyes' has already been translated and posted in Bulgarian. ...And yet not in English... In general, of course, I don't want to do anything, don't want to translate, edit, or proofread))) I just want to write. ^_^
But Elohim is available for free in English here: https://albireo-mkg.com/product/elohi...
Love with hazelnut eyes in Bulgarian is here, free too: https://albireo-mkg.com/free/rbg/llo

Olaf stumbled and came to a halt.
"Please, don't dawdle," his companion said evenly, though it was clear he was irritated.
"Why are the trees red?"
"It's blood. What other color would it be?" the man explained impatiently. "Come on, move along!"
"I don't want to," Olaf shook his head.
"Then you have no choice," his companion smirked. "The Black Abyss is a place of certainty. All choices are made above. Down here, you simply do as you're told."
"Who says?" Olaf retorted stubbornly.
"In your case — me," the Abyss dweller began to spread darkness around him again.
"Alright! Alright! No need for darkness! I'll go!" Olaf cried out, recalling the viscous non-existence.
The companion flashed a sharp smile and nodded towards the gates.

The creative challenge of the day for the game #I_am_here_eternity. You have the freedom to join the game (and quit it) whenever you want. Follow your curiosity and do the tasks that spark your interest. And those that you don't like - ignore them. The reward of the game (with consistent and diligent effort (and practice) of tasks) - a richer and happier life.

Then mark on the map how each place sounds. You can do this at different times of the day, in your own city or while on vacation.
