US Southwest Suffering From Worst Drought in 1,200 Years

A megadrought that’s been scorching southwestern United States for the past two decades is now noted to be the worst in around 1,200 years, based on new research that analyzed tree ring patterns. Megadroughts refer to severely arid conditions that last for a couple of decades.
An initial study showed that the moisture deficit seen in the southwest between 2000 and 2018 was exceeded by a megadrought in the late 1500s. Researchers used tree ring patterns to determine soil moisture levels over long timespans. An update of the study, published in Nature magazine on Feb. 14, looked at drought between 2020 and 2021, and concluded that the 22-year period was the driest period since 800 CE, exceeding the megadrought of the 1500s.
“At 22-yr long, the turn-of-the-twenty-first-century drought is highly likely to continue through a 23rd year and match the duration of the shortest of the reconstructed megadroughts,” the report states. The previous driest 22 year period was 1571–1592.

Report: Pence Defends RNC Censure of Cheney and Kinzinger

Former Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday defended the Republican National Committee (RNC)’s resolution that censured Reps. Liz Cheney (R‑WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R‑IL) and asserted January 6, 2021, protesters engaged in “legitimate political discourse,” according to a report.
Pence said the RNC’s resolution was not referring to people who engaged in violence, but “a whole range of people that have been set upon” by the House Democrats’ committee investigating the riot that day, according to a report in the Washington Post.
He also declined to defend Cheney and Kinzinger, anti-Trump Republicans who sit on the committee after being selected by Democrats.

Pence, who spoke at Stanford University after an invite by Stanford College Republicans, reiterated his view that January 6 was a “tragic day” due to the violence, but said the RNC was not talking about those engaged in violence.
“I just don’t know too many people around the country, including my friends at the RNC, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, who have any different view than it was tragic day, that the people that ransacked the Capitol were wrong and should be held to account in the law,” Pence said, according to the Post.
“And I think they made a very clear statement, after the fact, that said, ‘We were talking about what’s happening in Washington today, with the January 6th committee’ … and I believe them. They’re good people, and I believe that’s what they meant,” he added.

Biden Admits Why He Runs from His Job and Goes on Vacation

White House press secretary Jen Psaki has worked tirelessly to make excuses for President Joe Biden’s frequent vacations. On Thursday, Biden made her job a bit harder.

During a speech at the Shipyards in Lorain, Ohio, the president said he had been talking to Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge, who previously represented Ohio’s 11th District in Congress.

“She said something that reminded me of what I miss as well,” Biden said of his conversation with Fudge. “She said, ‘It’s so good to be home in Ohio.’”

“No, I really mean it. And I said, ‘You’re probably the only one here that understands that every time I get a chance, I go home to Delaware.’

“You think I’m joking. I’m not.”

Freedom Convoy organizer arrested

According to the CBC, Barber is expected to face charges. The protest in downtown Ottawa has crossed into its third week.Barber has also been listed as one of three protest organizers in a class action lawsuit filed with the Ontario Supreme Court. The lawsuit was filed by lawyer Paul Champ on behalf of his client, 21-year-old public servant Zexi Li.The suit also names other organizers Tamara Lich and Benjamin Dichter.An 10-day injunction was granted by Ontario Supreme Court Justice Hugh McLean as a result of the lawsuit, banning the truckers and protestors from honking their horns.The lawyer representing the residents of Ottawa in the lawsuit against the truckers said the “loud and prolonged honking” is causing physical harm to the residents.In response to the ruling, truckers in the streets honked their horns.As the protest continues on, the Trudeau government has taken increasingly more restrictive actions against the demonstration.Earlier this week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he would be invoking the Emergencies Act in order to deal with the ongoing protests.“The Emergencies Act will be used to strengthen and support la …

Cuomo sued for sexual harassment

Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo is being sued for sexual harassment by a state trooper following a recent string of legal victories that saw all charges against him dismissed.
Cuomo asked the unidentified trooper personal questions while she was on duty, kissed her on the cheek, and “placed the palm of his hand on her belly button and slid it across her waist to her right hip” while she was on duty in 2019, according to a Thursday filing with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York seeking a declaratory judgment that Cuomo and others violated both federal and local laws and assorted economic damages.
