Is Negotiating with Putin possible?
Is Negotiating with Putin even possible at this point?
OPINION — The war in Ukraine has now moved into its second, more protracted, and likely more violent phase. Unsurprisingly, given the extent of Russian atrocities, ongoing negotiations have borne little fruit. Many question whether existing Western strategies can impact Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision-making calculus.
A radically different approach is needed to successfully encourage a negotiated solution and to avoid further economic contagion which a protracted war could inject into global markets.
Negotiation psychology is critical in understanding Putin’s desires. At present, Putin’s strategy is driven by a combination of maximalist goals and self-righteous ideology. It also appears that he is employing negotiations as a feint to regain his equilibrium. By publicly claiming to refocus his campaign on the East, withdrawing troops from Kyiv, a …

Israel airstrikes in Gaza in response to rocket
JERUSALEM, April 18 – Israel shot down a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip on Monday, the Israeli military said, the first such attack in months as tensions over a flashpoint Jerusalem shrine drew angry pro-Palestinian rhetoric from Jordan and U.S. mediation efforts.
No Gaza faction claimed responsibility for the launch, which followed warnings by the dominant Hamas Islamists of reprisals for Israeli conduct around Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa mosque compound.
Within hours, Israeli airstrikes hit camps used by Hamas and another Gaza faction, Palestinian sources said. The military said one target was an arms manufacturing site. No one was hurt.
Since Friday, Al Aqsa – also revered by Jews as a vestige of two ancient temples – has seen confrontations between Palestinian stone-throwers and Israeli riot police recalling violence that helped fan a Gaza war one year ago.

Kamala: US bans anti-satellite missile tests

Vice President Kamala Harris announced on Monday that the U.S. will no longer conduct tests of direct-ascent anti-satellite (ASAT) missiles, making it the first nation to express such a commitment. “We have consistently condemned these tests and called them reckless, but that is not enough,” Harris said during a speech at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. “Today we are going further. I am pleased to announce that as of today, the United States commits not to conduct destructive direct-ascent anti-satellite missile testing.” “Simply put: These tests are dangerous, and we will not conduct them,” she added. “We are the first nation to make such a commitment and today, on behalf of the United States of America, I call on all nations to join us.” [embedded content] Harris pointed to Russia’s Nove …

Musk setting up move for Twitter
House Oversight and Reform Committee member Michael Cloud discusses censorship of conservatives on ‘The Evening Edit.’ Tesla CEO Elon Musk is willing to invest up to $15 billion of his own cash to take Twitter private and will make a bid within 10 days, according to Tuesday reports. The New York Post reported Tuesday that Musk, with a 9.1% stake in the social media company, has tapped Morgan Stanley to help raise an additional $10 billion. (SUZANNE CORDEIRO/AFP via Getty Images / Getty Images)Musk’s massive $43 billion bid to purchase the company – or $54.20 per share – may require borrowing against both the company and his stock in addition to raising money from private equity investors, The Post reported, citing two sources close to the situation. The estimated $10 to $15 billion Musk is reportedly willing to invest is well above his roughly $3.4 billion stake in the company. The sources told The Post that the co-investors will collectively have more equity in Twitter, but Musk will remain the single largest shareholder. ELON MUSK TWEETS HIS PHILOSOPHY ON SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY AMID BID TO BUY TWITTERThe co-investors will reportedly finance a hostile tender directly to Twitter shareholders, which happens when an outside investor’s ambitions to take over another company do not have management’s approval or blessing. Musk will launch the tender officer within roughly 10 days, according to The Post. It remains to be seen how successful Musk will be in raising the necessary cash, as his propensity for controversy has turned off some investors. (Photo Illustration by Thomas Trutschel/Photothek via Getty Images / Getty Images)Last week, Twitter adopted a measure known as a “poison pill,” which refers to a tactic that companies employ to block an investor from accumulating a majority stake in a company. If any shareholder accumulates a 15% stake in the company in a purchase not approved by the board of directors, other shareholders will get the right to buy additional shares at a discount diluting the roughly 9.1% stake Musk recently purchased. For Musk’s bid to be successful, he would need to win full approval from a majority of Twitter shareholders. DESANTIS LOOKS TO HOLD TWITTER BOARD ‘ACCOUNTABLE’ FOR RESPONSE TO MUSK’S BUYOUT BIDFOX Business has reached out to Musk for comment but did not hear back before publication. Twitter declined to comment. Twitter is leaving open the possibility of negotiating with Musk or another suitor. In a regulator filing on Monday, Twitter’s board says the shareholder rights agreement should not interfere with any merger or offer approved by the board. TOP PENTAGON OFFICIAL QUITS

A top Pentagon official has resigned, issuing a warning about the ongoing technological races between the United States and its adversaries.
Preston Dunlap, who spent more than three years as the founding chief architect officer for the Space Force, appears to have resigned this week, posting a lengthy note on LinkedIn detailing what he believes his former colleagues need to focus on moving forward.
Dunlap’s eight-page letter includes four steps “to fight the beast of bureaucracy,” and they are: “1) shock the system, 2) Flip the Acquisition Script, 3) Just Delivery Already, and 4) Slay the Valley of Death and Scale.”

These Four MAJOR Airlines Drop Mask Requirement

Four major U.S. airlines are doing away with mask requirements after a Florida federal judge on Monday struck down the mandate.
Several airlines including United, Delta, Southwest and American announced they’re dropping the requirement for passengers and employees.
Delta noted that “mask mandates in other countries may still be in effect,” despite the airline’s announcement.
“You may experience inconsistent enforcement during the next 24 hours as this news is more broadly communicated,” the company added.
As reported by Human Events News, Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle said the Biden administration’s mandate is unlawful because it exceeds the statutory authority of the CDC and that its implementation violates administrative law.
The mandate for travelers on buses, trains and airplanes was recently extended through May 3rd, 15 days after it was set to expire.

Justice Thomas returns to Supreme Court bench to hear oral arguments following illness
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has returned to the bench following an illness and hospitalization that had kept him from work for roughly a month. Thomas, 73, appeared Monday in person for oral arguments on several cases.
The conservative jurist had been hospitalized at Sibley Memorial Hospital, in Washington, D.C. on March 18, where he was treated for an infection and discharged a week later.
His first post-hospital public appearance was April 8, when he posed for a photo-op with Herschel Walker, a Republican running for the Senate seat in Georgia.
A court spokesperson said Thomas has flu-like symptoms but did not have COVID-19.
Thomas’ illness and subsequent absence coincided with the public disclosure and subsequent controversy over wife Ginni Thomas’ communication with former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows round the time of the Jan. 6 C …
