Laura Lee is the author of 21 books. In addition to a large catalog of humorous reference titles such as The Pocket Encyclopedia of Aggravation and Don't Screw It Up, she has written one children's book, A Child's Introduction to Ballet, two novels, Angel and Identity Theft, and Oscar's Ghost, which deals with conflicts between members of Oscar Wilde's circle over his legacy after the playwright's death and Wilde Nights & Robber Barons, the story of a member of Wilde's circle who went on to be part of an international band of confidence tricksters who used false titles of nobility.

The San Francisco Chronicle has said of her work: "Lee's dry, humorous tone makes her a charming companion... She has a penchant for wordplay that is irresistible

A book by Victoria Nelson "On Writer's Block" which I read many years ago was valuable to me. Nelson says that when you get writer's block there is usually a good reason for it. Instead of forcing it, go away and wait for your subconscious to come up with the answer. Sometimes I will stop and say, "Why isn't this working?" Then I'll take a nap or a shower or sometimes table a project for months or years. I've learned to make requests of my subconscious and to let it work in the background until the oven timer goes off. When it does, you need to get right on it. (less)

In terms of a career, it is difficult and sometimes emotionally draining. The only time I can say I really enjoy being a writer is when I am writing. (less)

Wilde Nights & Robber Barons Now Available

In 2011, a pair of love letters, hidden for more than a century, were discovered uncatalogued in an archive in Sydney, Australia. They were passionate declarations of love from one young man to another. The writer referred to the recipient as his “darling pretty.” He talked about how much he missed him and imagined sending “millions of kisses all over your beautiful body.” He signed off “your lovi Read more of this blog post »

A Book of Surrealist Games by Mel Gooding
“We have lived for too long in the dreary region of homo economicus, our lives shadowed by principles of self-interest, utilitarian 'necessities,' instrumental moralities. But we are permitted to hope; to revive those great and optimistic words of Breton: 'Perhaps the imagination is on the verge of recovering its rights.' We must welcome, as did the Surrealists, the re-entry into modern life of homo ludens, the imaginative man at play, the intuitive visionary.”

Milan Kundera
“Man proceeds in the fog. But when he looks back to judge people of the past, he sees no fog on their path. From his present, which was their faraway future, their path looks perfectly clear to him, good visibility all the way. Looking back, he sees the path, he sees the people proceeding, he sees their mistakes, but not the fog.”
Milan Kundera, Testaments Betrayed: An Essay in Nine Parts

Oscar Wilde
“If a work of art is rich and vital and complete, those who have artistic instincts will see its beauty, and those to whom ethics appeal more strongly than aesthetics will see its moral lesson. It will fill the cowardly with terror, and the unclean will see in it their own shame. It will be to each man what he is himself. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.”
Oscar Wilde

Helen Prejean
“It is easy to forgive the innocent. It is the guilty who test our morality. People are more than the worst thing they have ever done.”

“I became convinced that noncooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good.”
