Laura Lee is the author of 20 books. In addition to a large catalog of humorous reference titles such as The Pocket Encyclopedia of Aggravation and Don't Screw It Up, she has written one children's book, A Child's Introduction to Ballet, two novels, Angel and Identity Theft, and Oscar's Ghost, which deals with conflicts between members of Oscar Wilde's circle over his legacy after the playwright's death.

The San Francisco Chronicle has said of her work: "Lee's dry, humorous tone makes her a charming companion... She has a penchant for wordplay that is irresistible."

A book by Victoria Nelson "On Writer's Block" which I read many years ago was valuable to me. Nelson says that when you get writer's block there is usually a good reason for it. Instead of forcing it, go away and wait for your subconscious to come up with the answer. Sometimes I will stop and say, "Why isn't this working?" Then I'll take a nap or a shower or sometimes table a project for months or years. I've learned to make requests of my subconscious and to let it work in the background until the oven timer goes off. When it does, you need to get right on it. (less)

In terms of a career, it is difficult and sometimes emotionally draining. The only time I can say I really enjoy being a writer is when I am writing. (less)

I'm pleased to announce that I've been invited to sign copies of Oscar's Ghost at Friday's performance. Even more exciting: The Grand Rapids Ballet has created a special coupon code just for readers of Oscar's Ghost (and even thos... Read more of this blog post »

Oscar Wilde
“If a work of art is rich and vital and complete, those who have artistic instincts will see its beauty, and those to whom ethics appeal more strongly than aesthetics will see its moral lesson. It will fill the cowardly with terror, and the unclean will see in it their own shame. It will be to each man what he is himself. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.”
Oscar Wilde

Helen Prejean
“It is easy to forgive the innocent. It is the guilty who test our morality. People are more than the worst thing they have ever done.”
Helen Prejean

Madeleine L'Engle
“Because to take away a man's freedom of choice, even his freedom to make the wrong choice, is to manipulate him as though he were a puppet and not a person.”
Madeleine L'Engle

Martin Luther King Jr.
“I became convinced that noncooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good.”
Martin Luther King Jr., The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Edward R. Murrow
“We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine; and remember that we are not descended from fearful men. Not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate, and to defend causes that were for the moment unpopular.”
Edward R. Murrow
