CSS3 Watch

CSS3 Watch:

Curating examples of creative, innovative, and unexpected use of CSS3 — so you and I don't have to. Of course, I'm sure I'll keep adding to my own list, too.

Bye-Bye, 'My'

Bye-Bye, 'My':

This is a debate that has existed as long as I've been doing web design: In a web app, do you label text elements as 'My ___' or 'Your ___'?

Erika Hall favors 'Your', and so have I for as long as I've been involved in the debate. In her words,

In their excellent Design Pattern Library, the Yahoo! Developer Network explains the heart of the problem their parent created. Instead of reinforcing a sense of ownership and agency, this unnatural locution feels presumptuous and...

Suppliers: Apple to Build CDMA iPhones in December

Suppliers: Apple to Build CDMA iPhones in December:

Neil Hughes, AppleInsider:

Analyst Jeffrey Fidacaro with Susquehanna Financial Group said in a note to investors on Wednesday that checks with overseas suppliers indicated Apple is prepared to build 3 million CDMA iPhones in December, keeping the device on track for an early 2011 launch.

Also notable from the same article:

Fidacaro expects Apple to sell a record 11.6 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of the company's fiscal 2010...

{e} house studio Seeks Web Project Manager

{e} house studio Seeks Web Project Manager:

Scanning a few of the available jobs posted recently to Authentic Jobs, this listing for {e} house studio stuck out for a few reasons. First, their office is located in Charleston, South Carolina. From what I know of Charleston, it's rather nice place to live and work — very family friendly from what I gather. Second, if you're not already living in the area, relocation assistance may be offered.

Finally, after doing a little digging, I found this...

How to Kern Type [Well]

How to Kern Type [Well:]:

The title of this post is actually "How to Kern Type Perfectly", but you and I know there's no magic formula for perfect kerning. Instead, Rob Sutton shares a tip he learned from an esteemed mentor:

She suggested turning the type upside down, that way you don't read the word, you merely look at the shapes the characters make and the space that's created between them….

It was a great tip, and one I still use today.

Fillerati Filler Text

Fillerati Filler Text:

While the debate about the merits of filler text will continue indefinitely, I still find use for it from time to time. Lipsum.org has been the go-to site for years, but why not give those who review your comps some quality reading instead — L. Frank Baum, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Herman Melville, H.G. Wells?

The text also includes basic HTML formatting options, too (p, h1, li).

Canon 7D @ 1000 fps

This is a test video shot by Oton Bačar with a Canon 7D at 60 frames per second (fps). Yes, the headline is confusing. It says 1000 fps. What up, Jack?

Well, from what I can gather reading through the 300+ comments on the Vimeo page, Oton used a plug-in called Twixtor that artificially alters the frame rate of footage. This plug-in is compatible with After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut, and several other programs.

In Oton's video, Twixtor took footage shot at 60 fps and slowed it down to...

ProCSSor, a CSS 'Prettifier'

ProCSSor, a CSS 'Prettifier':

Funny, I threw 500 lines of CSS in there with default settings and it didn't change much. Is that good or bad?

For what it's worth, this may be a handy reference tool to compare your method for writing markup to that of the other conventions suggested by this tool.

Five

Thank You

What began five years ago as a sidebar on my site manually powered by MovableType has, certainly to my surprise, become one of the web's best destinations for posting and finding jobs for web, design, and creative individuals.

Authentic Jobs, its customers, and I would like to say thank you for making the site a success.

Continuing this month's theme of giving back, please head over to authenticjobs.com/five and put yourself in the running to win some pretty fantastic gifts — an iPad, a...
