In Praise of Quitting Your Job

In Praise of Quitting Your Job:

Ben Pieratt, in an email advising a friend:

The reason I'm so supportive of you quitting your job is that I'm intensely empathetic to your situation and I believe that you're doing everyone a disservice by sticking around….

I suspect that eventually our culture will catch up with our evolving understanding of work ethic and the personal nature of work in creative fields. In the meantime there's going to be a lot of wasted talent pushing too much effort in the wrong directions. It is clear to me and anyone who interacts with you that a misplacement of your energies is at everyone's loss. I hope that you're able to recognize this fact and move forward accordingly.

Ben Barry: Art Direction for the f8 Conference

Ben Barry: Art Direction for the f8 Conference:

This is some really outstanding design work that covers multiple mediums. Love the graph aesthetics, custom glass tables, and badges that hang at an angle, also doubling as conference guides.

ISO50 Gap Logo Redesign Contest

ISO50 Gap Logo Redesign Contest:

180 entries and counting. Judging any of these without seeing them in the context of promotional material, apparel labeling, store signage, etc. is probably a little folly, to be honest.

So, I'll be folly: #23, #163, and #170 stand out as I flip through the list.

W3C: 'Don't Use HTML5 Yet'

W3C: 'Don't Use HTML5 Yet':

Paul Krill, InfoWorld:

'The problem we're facing right now is there is already a lot of excitement for HTML5, but it's a little too early to deploy it because we're running into interoperability issues,' including differences between video on devices, said the official, Philippe Le Hegaret, W3C interaction domain leader….

'We basically want to be feature-complete by mid-2011,' Le Hegaret said. Once the specification reaches that stage, W3C will issue a last call for comments. The next stage would be the candidate recommendation stage and then a recommendation stage. 'And then we're done,' Le Hegaret said.

2022 can't come soon enough. If you can't wait until then, pick up a copy of HTML5 for Web Designers and ignore the W3C's recommendation — figuratively and literally.

David A. Smith, Sign Artist

This video by Danny Cooke is a win on two fronts: Appreciating David's passion as a glass embosser, and enjoying Danny's talent as a cinematographer.

Apple Developing iPhones with Larger, Smaller Screens

Apple Developing iPhones with Larger, Smaller Screens:

AppleInsider, quoting analyst Shaw Wu:

One possibility we are picking up is a 'mini' or 'nano' iPhone with a smaller candybar form factor leveraging technology in its new mini touchscreen iPod nano.

Add wrist strap, cue Dick Tracy remarks.

In Which I Film Myself Saying 'Thank You'

In Which I Film Myself Saying 'Thank You':

I thought it'd be worthwhile to say thanks for your charity: water contributions in more than just writing. I use the same lavalier mic as the one used in the Colosseo video, but the audio quality isn't as good. I think it's time to finally invest in a quality wireless lavalier mic powered by something portable such as the Zoom H4n.

The iPad app at the start is Chris Bayol's DSLR Slate.
