Tranquilosophy: Walk

walk

Week 33: Walk

Lift, shift, place. This is the basic instruction for walking meditation. Over and over again without a destination.

Simple, often autopilot, and overflowing with benefits, walking is en vogue.

Great minds such as Steve Jobs, Thoreau, and Virginia Woolf used walking to think better, gain energy, and conduct meetings.

I mean, they’re pretty solid endorsements, right?

Goodness, there’s even a TED Talk touting the benefits where the speaker claims that sitting is the new smoking. She says that we’re on our bums approximately 10 hours a day and this takes a toll on our energy, state of mind, and physical health.

A friend of mine began getting off the Metro a few stops before hers and lost 100 pounds from her daily 1.5-hour walking commute!

Walking proponents such as Geoff Nicholson, author of The Lost Art of Walking, recommends partaking in this beneficial activity sans phone, music, podcasts, or audiobooks. Yep, just engaging in the distraction-free act of putting one foot in front of the other.

The French refer to this as flaneuring—leisurely strolling without a destination in mind. When’s the last time you allowed yourself this pleasure?

In a 2014 Standford University study, 81% of participants noticed an increase in creativity. Thoreau wrote in his journal that when his legs moved, thoughts began to flow.

Have a problem to solve? A brainstorming meeting to attend? Feeling sluggish mid-day? Put on comfy shoes and hit the pavement for a dose of fresh air, change of scenery, and shift from the screen.

Walking is said to also lift spirits, strengthen memory, and decrease risk of some cancers. 30 minutes per day is recommended. Sound impossible? Try 15 in the morning and 15 in the evening. Weave it into your daily routine.

This week weave walking into your routine. Schedule a walking date with a girlfriend. Take your pup on a long stroll. Sneak out in the afternoon for a walk around the block. Notice how you feel when you return from your walk. Has anything shifted?

Share insights and photos from your walk in our Facebook group and/or using #52weekstranquility via other social media channels.

Tranquilosophy: Drink Your Greens

green

Week 32 of 52 Weeks of Tranquility

Despite being veg for nearly two decades, I’ll often reach for anything but veggies when given a choice.

Sprinkled glazed donut? Okay! Pizza? Absolutely! Fruit? Give it to me!

But greens, well, not on my must-have list with the exception of a big arugula or spinach salad with all the perfect zesty lemon dressing.

When introduced to the world of green smoothies in 2010 {watch these how-to green smoothie videos} and green juices shortly thereafter, my veggie consumption sky rocketed. And I liked it!

To make these vitamin-infused babies, I invested in a refurbished Vitamix {a basic blender works, too} and then a Breville Juice Fountain Compact.

Now you can find pre-packaged green drinks at many grocery stores, even gas stations! My yoga studio carries a few small-batched creations for the yogi needing a boost on-the-go. The great news is they’re everywhere!

The benefits touted are many–from flooding your system with vitamins and nutrients, to being quicker to consume than chewing a salad, to increased energy, to improved digestion, to reduction of inflammation, to blood sugar stabilization, to mental clarity {bye bye white flour and sugar which are said to cloud the mind}, to pretty skin, to improved immunity. I mean, wow, right?

Juicing {juices} vs Blending {smoothies}: juicing separates juice from the fiber and blending blends all the ingredients together. Some prefer one over the other. For me, it depends on mood, creativity {ex. what ingredients are on hand}, and time {juicing tends to take longer} at that moment.

Blending is a perfect starting point to drinking your greens and it’s best to shoot for 3 veggies to each fruit. Juicing allows you to get more veggies {AND nutrients} inside since the fiber is removed.

You may be saying, “I know, I know it’s good for me, but where do I begin?” Picture me taking your hand and leading you into my tiny kitchen, taking you through the steps below, and sending you off with a belly full of greens, glowing skin, and happy heart. You’re not alone in this process.

Green juice* recipe:

1 green apple

4 stalks celery

1 cucumber

4 handfuls spinach

6 kale leaves

1/2 peeled lemon

1 piece fresh ginger

* Don’t have a juicer? Don’t despair, you can still make juice with a blender.

Green smoothie recipe:

2 handfuls spinach

1 tablespoon chia seeds**

1 cup almond milk or water

1/2 avocado**

1 tablespoon coconut oil**

1 apple–unpeeled, cored, and chopped

1/2 lemon–peeled and chopped

** These offer good fats to help you feel full along with heaps of nutrients!

This week play with one of the recipes above or a few of the many online. Mix and match your favorite fruits and veggies with a powerhouse such as chia, hemp, or flax seed and coconut oil. Spice it up with a bit of ginger. Add good creamy fat with avocado.

Share insights, favorite recipes, and photos of your veggie drinking in our Facebook group and/or using #52weekstranquility via other social media channels.

Watch for Week 33 of 52 Weeks of Tranquility next week. Thank you for being here with us. Bisous. x

Tranquillité Parfum: Choose Our Bottle {Giveaway}

4d1afc34de9a11e287f422000a1f9afa_7

While in Paris two years ago, I created the scent Tranquillité—notes of gardenia, jasmine, sweet musk, rose, and sandalwood make this a girly delight. Original creation shown in the photo above and here’s a peek at my parfum class.

Compared to L’Instant de Guerlain by my teacher, I find the scent to be an intoxicating blend of all things tranquility. Each ingredient was carefully chosen to represent the different aspects of who we are—earthy, sweet, floral, and fragrant.

We sold out of this yummy eau de toilette, so I gathered more of the perfume essence during my recent jaunt to Paris.

Before we turn the Pink Palace into a chemistry lab, I’d love YOUR feedback on the bottles for the eau de toilette and parfum oil.

To enter the giveaway, please:

1. Choose your favorite eau de toilette number {1-6} AND color {pink or gold}

2. Choose your favorite parfum oil number {1-4}

Example: “I love #5 in gold for the eau de toilette and #3 for the parfum oil.”

In exchange for your feedback by Thursday, August 13 at noon ET, one voter will be chosen at random to receive a complimentary Tranquillité item upon production.

The winner will be announced in the comments section below Thursday evening.

Ingredients:

Free of dyes and animal testing, Tranquillité is a blend of essential and fragrance oils made in France. Please note we don’t use real musk, as it comes from animals and we use no animals products. We love animals!

The parfum oil will be a blend of jojoba and almond oil. Jojoba oil is carrier oil used to moisturize skin, absorbs quickly, and is odorless. Almond oil is anti-aging and nourishing.

Oh, and did I mention there will be organic rose petals floating in your handmade creation?

Love:

A portion of all profits will benefit Tranquil Space Foundation and Farm Sanctuary.

Testimonials:

“OMG!!! I just received your perfume creation in the mail and I am crazy about it! It may have to become my new signature scent! Thanks so much.”–Sally, Attorney + Artist

“The scent is divine & is one to worn & treasured everyday. Makes you feel warm, cozy & indeed, tranquil. Thank you for creating it!” –Diana

Tranquillité smells exquisite. It is exactly the type of perfume you want to wear on your wedding day and the office. I am constantly smelling my wrist!” –Denise

J’Adore Tranquillité! Florals are my favorite and I knew you’d put something wonderful together.” –Lynne

“I absolutely adore Tranquillite! Buying Tranquillite parfum scent unseen felt like a little bit of a risk– the idea of a scent created in France sounded fun, but personal tastes can be so different. Would it be too loud? Obnoxious? Or the most common problem I tend to have with scents: Would I be allergic? My fears were unfounded, however, and the scent was exactly as described: Tranquillite. Sweet, soft, subtle, luxurious. Absolutely nothing obnoxious, loud, or otherwise ostentatious. The fragrance melted effortlessly into my skin to become a natural but more alluring part of me. This lovely, easy to wear parfum can effortlessly become a signature scent. It is at the same time both cozy and light, comfortable yet charming. Truly a great find!” –Elizabeth

“It smells heavenly! Thank you so much for offering to bring it back. I really love it.” –Pam

“I have been significantly rationing what little I have left for some time, and am très sad that I cannot spray myself all willy nilly with your wonderful creation. I think I may have told you this before but close to 2 years ago, I started the daily practice of spritzing myself with your perfume before bed, while looking at myself in the mirror & saying “I love Me.” It may seem like a small act, but it turned out to be incredibly powerful, once it became a habit. Your perfume has been the cherry on top. Thank you for that.” –Carrie

Tranquility du Jour #344: A Scary Diagnosis

Bonjour. Welcome to the 344th edition of Tranquility du Jour: A Scary Diagnosis with Sarah Evans. Be inspired by her story through breast cancer, the tools that helped her through the process, and how this diagnosis changed how she lives life.

Featured Guest:

Sarah_yogaheadshot_April2015 Sarah Evans began her yoga journey in 1998. After being an avid Hatha student for a few years, she craved deeper study and became a registered yoga instructor in 2004. Sharing the wisdom of yogic practices expanded her commitment to live a healthy lifestyle. In February 2014, she had just celebrated her son’s 4th birthday when she found a lump in her breast. She had no family history, but much to her surprise, a biopsy diagnosed Stage 2 breast cancer. After enduring a life threatening diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiation, and 6 surgeries, Sarah is forever changed. She found strength in unrelenting love from her incredible husband, 2 kids, family, friends, and amazing local yoga community. The events of the past year have served as a reminder for Sarah to live life in the gift of the present moment – one incredible moment at a time – with passion, joy, connection, and lots of love.

Q: Paula via Facebook: Hi Kimberly, congratulations on the newest addition to your family! He is adorable! I had a question about flying. I was thankful you shared your fears in your weekly love note back in June. It really helped to normalize the anxiety. I remember reading about the importance of breath while anxious. I’m wondering if you had any other suggestions on how you deal with flying since I know you are a traveler. I will be flying next month and am in my first trimester of my first pregnancy. So on top of the anxiety I also feel pretty crummy physically. Any thoughts you could share would be so appreciated!

Tranquilosophy: Try Minimalism

10919590_1593330437598245_1858631041_n

Week 31 of 52 Weeks of Tranquility

Capsule dressing. Tiny houses. Monotasking. Simplicity. Mindfulness. Digital detoxes. AM and PM rituals. Evaluate commitments. Slow down. Declutter. Less screen time. Less noise. All possessions inventory. Downsize.

You may wonder, what do these possibly have in common?

They are minimalism tools!

During my early commuting days, I’d often have a big fat book on simplicity tucked into my tote. Oh the irony. From Simple Abundance to The Simple Living Guide—these books were 400-500+ pages!

Since my first introductions to simple living in the late 90s, an entire genre of bloggers, books, and consultants have emerged touting minimalism. But what exactly is it?

Well, the Internet is filled with wonderful minimalist lifestyle resources: Into-Mind, The Minimalists, Be More With Less, Zen Habits, and Rowdy Kittens {Courtney and Tammy are former podcast interviewees} to name a few.

Minimalism, as defined by becomingminimalist.com, is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of everything that distracts us from it. Seems simple {not easy} and noble, right?

Since reading and rereading The Joy of Less, A Minimalist Living Guide, I’ve been much more cognizant of my purchasing habits. Rather than shopping or thrifting for the fun of it, before pulling out my credit card I ask myself, do you really need it?! The end of random drop-ins to Target or similar discount stores have left me with more time, money, and space for other things—mainly experiences.

I’ve also been on a mission to own less stuff. As someone drawn to vintage items, home accessories {hello white pug book ends and pink pig watering can}, and sparkles, this has taken a conscious shift. Regular purges of books to offset my book-buying tendencies and donation of outworn or unused clothing and shoes have become a seasonal event.

In addition, using my tea and stationery stashes before purchasing new ones has also helped me pare down.

Think about where you spend your time and money. Is it serving you?

While I may struggle with book-buying, your drug of choice may be TV time or shoe shopping.

Consider for a moment: if you cut that activity in half, what would you gain? More time? Less debt? Less clutter?

This week explore one tiny step toward minimalism. Avoid buying anything unnecessary. Declutter. Wear a few pieces all week. Eat similar things {example, make a big batch of steel cut oats and enjoy it each morning}.

Donate anything you haven’t worn in six months. Be present. Unsubscribe from magazines, emails, blogs, podcasts, and TV that no longer serve you. Monotask. Slow your pace. Stop overcommitting. Meditate.

May you find time and space for what matters most.

Share insights and photos of your minimalism practice in our Facebook group and/or using #52weekstranquility via other social media channels.

Watch for Week 32 of 52 Weeks of Tranquility delivered here next week. Thank you for being here with us. Bisous. x
