Happy Sweet 16 Tranquil Space
mom + Mookie posing by our sidewalk chalk art
Happy, happy birthday Tranquil Space.
Today is its Sweet 16 celebratory bake sale for charity (Tranquil Space Foundation and Farm Sanctuary).
Although I’m in Tuscany leading the final day of our Art + Asana retreat, my heart is also with our community in DC and Virginia.
16 years ago I hung fliers around Dupont Circle and opened the living room of my 4th floor walk-up to strangers. A warm fire, inspiring quotes tied with ribbon, and soothing tunes from a cassette tape {yes, a cassette tape} greeted yogis. The experience ended with homemade chai served in porcelain cups.
Although the sensory-filled offerings have shifted over the years, these sweet details remain critical to the Tranquil Space experience and it’s our team who makes them happen.
From hands-on assists, to creative and compassionate classes, to warm welcomes at the front desk, to playing music {not on cassette tapes}, to restocking supplies, to training new team members and teachers, to buying for the boutique, to keeping the studios clean—we couldn’t do it with their tireless and generous contributions.
From the bottom of my heart I thank the team for all they do to sprinkle sensory-filled tranquility onto DC/VA every single day {except Christmas, it’s our one day off!}.
And to the amazing community that has grown out of this experience over the years, I’m in awe.
Thank you for being part an integral part of this journey—in spirit, online, or in person.
Happy, happy Sweet 16. May you continue to serve tranquility far and wide.

Tranquilosophy: Create
Week 41: Create
Ah, the elusive practice of creating.
Until early adulthood I believed only a few were blessed with the creative gene and it had clearly passed me by. Art class was as awkward for me as gym class and I couldn’t help but notice that my painted birds, rainbows, or landscapes never looked like the others’.
It simply wasn’t my gift. It was little Johnny’s or Susie’s, but not mine.
Upon reading Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, my impression of creativity took a turn from feeling passed over by the art fairy to believing that everything we do can be a chance to create. Our daily routine offers numerous opportunities to create.
We get up in the morning and choose something to wear. We may exercise, make breakfast, read, or write. Then we may head to a day job where we have the opportunity to create—teach, write, work with clients, deal with colleagues, manage projects. We may head home to exercise (if it didn’t make it into the morning), meet with friends, make dinner, or read.
All of these daily activities can be creative expressions of who we are and how we see the world.

Tranquility du Jour #350: The Last Pig, Part 2
The Last Pig Part 2 with Bob Comis. Hear his journey from pig farmer to vegetable grower and the challenges that came with the transition. Learn the truth about “humane” meat and slaughter and what he means when he says “it’s about emotions, not logic.”
Direct download: Tranquility du Jour #350: The Last Pig, Part II
Featured Guest: Bob Comis
For the first few decades of his life, Bob Comis was oblivious to the suffering of non-human (and human) animals. Thanks to the courage and bravery of undercover investigators who secretly capture and share footage of the twin horrors of factory farming and industrial slaughter, Bob was roused from his ignorance. He became a vegan, but quickly failed. Then he became a humane pig farmer, and quickly succeeded. He raised pigs for slaughter for ten years, until one day in January, 2014 a powerful vibration of empathy, compassion, and love overwhelmed him, and with the strength of the universal goodness that is our unfettered state of being behind him, he decided to quit pig farming, start a vegetable farm, and become a vegetarian (vegan, in January 2015). Today, when Bob pulls a beet out of the ground, or unearths a brilliant cluster of potatoes he is able to be fully present, which is very much the opposite of his experience when he farmed pigs, which he did from a distance, divorced from the moment, disconnected from himself.

Tranquilosophy: Volunteer
Week 40: Volunteer
After filling my plate with formerly frozen pieces of cut fruit and mini pastries, I took my seat in a windowless conference room at Washington Hospice.
I was honoring the three-year anniversary of my Gramma’s death by going through a two-day volunteer training to work with people during their final days of life.
Since February I’ve been showing up regularly for three-hour shifts to sit with patients, fetch them or family members anything they need, stroke their hands, and offer support to patients and nursing staff in any way possible.
Recently I sat outside with a patient in the final stages of lung cancer while he switched between smoking a cigarette and puffing on his inhaler. We discussed the weather, his life as a plumber in DC, and our mutual passion for chewy candy.
My passion for volunteering began in grade school when my dance school would dress up in tutus and parade from room to room greeting nursing home patients.

A Weekend Out West
Swing sets lure me like a moth to a flame
Nature’s canvasPowell’s books makes me swoon
A worthy motto
Tea time with a former Tranquil Space teacher
Thursday afternoon I dropped sweet anxiety-ridden Mookie at daycare, hopped in an Uber, and headed to the airport en route to Portland. Many hours and time zones later, I arrived feeling a bit woozy as there was one more 50-minute jaunt to the Resort at the Mountain near Mt. Hood.
Nearly 15 months ago Tim and I signed up for Pioneer Nation–a creative entrepreneur pow-wow of sorts. And last weekend was the adventure.
Although I have a notebook filled with ideas, my biggest takeaways include:
push beyond my comfort zone. When asked to share a 60-second story with the attendees of when I knew my business would make it, I hesitated. After a couple cookies {comfort} and a good swing {top pic}, I decided to do it.
soak in the fresh fragrant air. The earthy, woodsy, dusky and delicious smell of the woods.
never pass up a swing set. It always makes me smile from ear to ear.
create a solution that solves a pain. Tranquility is something that we all crave.
find your why.
reflect on where you’re least effective and wasting time.
explore leaks in energy management. Create systems to avoid fatiguing your decision-making muscle.
reflect on where you want to be in 10 years.
vulnerability is sexy. Ash Beckham says everyone is in the closet for something. Share the awkward parts of yourself {like my candy corn problem shared via the fall seasonal podcast}.
how to host webinars. I hope to add these shortly!
spend time with girlfriends. We returned to Portland Sunday and I had three dates plus a solo excursion to Powell’s. Confession: I’m now the proud owner of four new books. #stopmebeforeibuymorebooks
Tim’s new nephew Connor is a-d-o-r-a-b-l-e.
Sip lots of tea. I found the most amazing tea at Townshend’s = Rose Peony, a white tea that tastes and smells like perfume.
Wear perfume. While reading Big Magic, I came across this Coco Chanel quote: “A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future.”
I’m in DC for a few days to see clients and hold the new Daybook in my hands {video forthcoming}. Then we’re off to Tuscany with Mary Catherine Starr to co-host Art + Asana.
Mama Wilson is coming to town for 10 days to watch our three boys so that Mookie has a buddy. Sweet thing suffers from severe separation anxiety, but survived his first weekend boarding experience with B+ report cards!
My mind is full, my body is tired, and my heart is open. I’m looking forward to exploring some of the ideas and questions above over the next few months and would love to have you along for this ongoing journey.
May your week be joyful. Find a swing set. Sip rose tea. Escape your comfort zone. Reflect. Be authentically and eccentrically you. Bisous. x

Tranquilosophy: Budget
Week 39: Budget
Spend less than you make. While this is the basic premise of budgeting, it gets more complex.
This image is a peek at the budget page forthcoming in the new Tranquility du Jour Daybook {launching next month}. For those of us who still love and use paper, it’s a simple balance sheet for regular review.
To create a budget, begin by listing your income resources such as paychecks, freelance work, and residual income.
Next, list your various expenses starting with fixed costs such as rent/mortgage, car payment, insurance, Internet, yoga membership, and student loans.

Takeaways from Elizabeth Gilbert Talk
Saturday night I settled into the pew with a few Tranquil Space teachers in great anticipation for Elizabeth Gilbert’s talk. Since devouring Eat, Pray, Love before it was a hit and hearing her TED Talk on creativity, I’ve been a fan.
She spent the majority of the event reading from her new book, Big Magic, and answering questions from the audience. She exuded confidence and compassion while handling tough questions with ease and vulnerability.
Here are my takeaways as penned into the front page of her book:
She knows fear intimately. {I liked that adverb}.
Argue for your limitations and you get to keep them.
Kill off fear and you murder creativity.
We must travel comfortably with fear.
Criticism is a small tax to pay to be heard and creative.
“Nobody will care”—prove to the Universe that you’re here to do something.
“No one’s going to care and it doesn’t matter”—then begin creating to make it matter.
Don’t dress rehearse for disaster. When we feel joy, thinking of the worst that will happen is wasting joy. Don’t try to prepare because you can’t.
Set a timer for 20 minutes and write. See what happens.
Art is subjective. Some will love, some will not.
Write your book for a specific person, not a demographic.
She read Louise Erdrich’s poem “Advice to Myself” and invited us to think about what we can say no to, so that our creativity can flow.
For more inspiration, peruse her podcast series Magic Lessons.
Have you started reading the book? If so, what are your takeaways so far?
May we all connect with the magic within. Practice, refill, practice. Bisous. x
